Working closely with farmers over the last 13 years has revealed an amazing pattern: the immense generosity of people. Last month, four Jasberry team members visited several farms in Chiang Rai, Thailand. If it wasn’t enough for Boonlue to welcome us onto her farm during the busy planting season, she insisted that we stay for lunch. Her farm is beautifully diverse and fertilized by fermented fish. From this diversity, she prepared us a wonderful meal. Everything on the table was farmed by her and her family: Boonlue caught us each a fish, harvested herbs from her garden, and cooked us her organically grown rice. Flavoured with lemongrass grown on the lake’s edge, this meal was as fresh as they come. Lunch finished with ripe mango and dragonfruit grown outside her front door. Just when we thought she could not be more generous, Boonlue took us to try her longan, bananas, and butterfly peas. We left with handfuls of fruits which we gladly brought home. Despite limited money wealth, Thai farmers radiate generosity and wisdom. This generosity inspires us every day to do more to uplift the lives Thai farmers through higher incomes and better health. Join the #JasberryMovement to reciprocate a small slice of this generosity.

Let’s get real: #Rice is responsible for 13% of global methane emissions. Unlike other crops, rice is often grown in flooded fields, creating conditions that favor methane-producing bacteria, making this crop a significant emitter. However, rice is also a staple food for 3.5 billion people and a source of income for 144 million rice farmers worldwide. So, how can we do better? Jasberry farmers practice rain-fed agriculture. This is important not only to reduce water use but also methane emissions. Rain-fed rice paddies release less than ½ the methane of irrigated fields! This is a critical first step towards making rice a more #sustainable crop. Now, we’re helping farmers implement more practices to reduce the carbon footprint of our rice by transitioning to #regenerative agriculture. This includes practices like planting tree lines, cover cropping, crop rotation, straw recycling, composting, and more. We know that rice production and a healthy planet can coexist; In fact, we’ve seen it. Join us in revolutionizing rice. Join the #JasberryMovement! #RegenerativeAgriculture #Methane #Food #Transform

Sustainability Student at McGill | Environmental Lead at Jasberry

It was such a privilege to visit Jasberry rice farms in Chiang Rai, Thailand last week to see rice planting in action and interview Jasberry rice farmers about their views on sustainable farming! This trip was filled with eye-opening moments. Here's one that stood out: As we pulled up to Peekop’s rice farm, I noticed the beautiful house that was on the land. I was admittedly shocked—Jasberry was founded to lift Thai farmers out of poverty, and I did not expect to see anything resembling wealth. I asked my boss about the house. He said, “When I was here two years ago, there was only a wooden bench where this house now is”. The average Jasberry farmer experiences a 14x increase in income by switching to Jasberry rice. That's life-changing. This summer has taught me the power of a brand that truly cares about social impact. As a sustainability major, I'm skeptical of companies making social and environmental claims. It’s easy and common to fall short because conducting transformative business is hard; it has taken the Jasberry team 13 years of working with farmers, dodging shotty deals with rice mills, and being rejected from an endless stream of grocery retailers to build a self-sustaining business. Now, the brand is in over 3,000 retailers across the US, including Whole Foods. Yet the challenges of upholding high farmer incomes and strong environmental standards can still seem insurmountable at times. This team's unending commitment to their mission is unlike anything I’ve seen and I’m honoured to be part of the team this summer. As someone who has spent endless hours reading about climate-adapted and sustainable farming, it's amazing to see it in person! Thank you so much Watcharin (Nhon) Jaiwongkaew and Peetachai (Neil) Dejkraisak for bringing me along. Thank you also to The Cansbridge Fellowship, my sponsor Ivy Xu, and my supervisor Graham MacDonald for making this possible!

Every planting season, our team spends time on our amazing Jasberry Organic Superfood Rice farms! As a social enterprise, the livelihood of our farmers comes first, which is why we devote as much time as possible to being with our farmers. Our co-founders started Jasberry after spending years on #rice farms in North eastern Thailand, developing a passion for uplifting the income and health of rice farmers. 13 years later, it’s amazing to see the change: Over 2,500 Jasberry farmers have increased their income by 14x, yields are higher, fields are more #diverse, and the Jasberry team is more inspired than ever. Trips to the field are essential to see the process firsthand, understand the farmers’ needs, and ensure Jasberry standards are being upheld from the very beginning. We prioritize water conservation, good quality seeds, planting in the best areas, and biodiversity—all of which are affected by planting season. That’s why this time of the year is so important, and why we love to be on the farm to see the crop ourselves. Planting season is always exciting—it’s a new start for our farmers and a fresh season for our team. See you in October for harvest! #Rice #Planting #Farmers #Jasberry #JasberryMovement

It’s rice planting season here in Thailand! How do farms prepare for planting? Start the nursery: Yes, you read that right. Our rice starts in a nursery. 20-30 days before planting, seeds are densely sown in a small site near the field, covered with soil and watered. This protects the seeds during their early life, when they are most vulnerable to pests and other problems Prepare the field: To transplant the rice from the nursery, the field needs to be ready! The field is levelled to optimize water and organic fertilizer use, making planting and harvesting easier, and decreasing methane emissions (by eliminating uneven pockets where water can accumulate). Time to plant: Once the rice has grown a few leaves, it’s ready to plant! Our farmers also try to maintain water cover during planting and therefore will often wait for a heavy rainfall. Then, the several-month process of maintaining and caring for these crops begins! From the farm to your table, a lot of work goes into Jasberry Organic Superfood Rice. But we know it’s worth it 😋 #Sustainable #Agriculture #Organic #Rice #Farming

What does “regenerative agriculture” mean for rice farming? Rice is a uniquely semi-aquatic plant, with niche needs; Existing #regenerative guidelines typically don’t apply to rice. But that doesn’t stop us from growing rice that protects the environment, alongside farmers and consumers. At Jasberry, we’re going beyond organic and into regenerative. With the practices currently used by our Jasberry farmers (such as cover cropping and crop rotation), we could claim that our rice is “regeneratively farmed”. But before we claim regenerative status, we want to make sure we’re doing it 100% right—working with farmers to store the most amount of carbon and optimize long-term soil health. And we’re excited to bring you on this journey! We believe that to be regenerative, you must strive to transform, not just maintain. Transform the land, the environment, and the livelihoods of farmers. As we kick off our journey into regenerative agriculture, we invite you to tell us what #regenerative means to you, and what you expect from your sustainable rice brand. #RegenerativeAgriculture #Sustainability #OrganicFarming
