This session at REDeFiNE TOMORROW 2024 featured Stani Kulechov (founder of AAVE) and Calvin Chu {hiring devs} (core builder at Impossible Finance) discussing Avara's evolution from DeFi to the broader Web3 ecosystem. 🌐 Avara is an umbrella entity comprising various brands working in the Web3 space to make the internet more people-powered. It includes Aave Labs (supporting the Aave protocol), Lens (a decentralized social network), and Family Wallet (a user-experience-focused Ethereum wallet). 🪙 Stani acknowledged that widespread DeFi adoption might take time due to the fragile financial environment. However, Layer 2 solutions like RollUps can reduce transaction costs and make DeFi more accessible. 🚀 Validium, using Ethereum, is the next evolution of transaction verification technology. It stores data off-chain, reducing costs and increasing capacity, making it suitable for large-scale applications, especially in payment systems. 🌐 Stani envisions a future where blockchain-based solutions and infrastructure are more flexible and transparent in payments and financial transactions, integrated with traditional FinTech innovations. 🪙 The GHO stablecoin, backed by collateral on the Aave platform, offers a fixed interest rate, unlike other stablecoins that often use algorithms for variable rates.   🔶 GHO is expanding cross-chain with Chainlink's CCIP technology, allowing usage on supported networks. This will reduce transaction costs and create yield opportunities on Layer 2 solutions. 📈 Aave V4 introduces liquidity insurance premiums, enabling more efficient risk pricing based on user collateral. This feature helps bring assets into the Aave market, redefines risk, and benefits liquidity suppliers. 🚀 Stani believes in the potential of ZK Rollups for scaling. They use mathematical principles for verification and store rollups on Ethereum. ZK compression techniques make them more efficient than Optimistic Rollups. 🔷 Validium can significantly reduce costs due to its data layering. It also opens up possibilities for payment applications, particularly micropayments, creating new revenue models for the Web3 internet. 🌟 ZK Proofs benefit privacy by allowing users to prove information without revealing all data. These proofs can be used in social and financial contexts, like proving identity for loans without full disclosure. 🪙 While financial infrastructure might take longer for widespread adoption, Stani believes social applications will expand faster as they are not directly related to finance. Web3 also has the potential to create incentives, allowing users to own their data and generate more income. 💪 Avara continues to build and support the Web3 ecosystem. It's exciting to see how projects like Aave V4, GHO stablecoin, and Lens will shape the future of decentralized finance and social networking. Ambre Soubiran, CEO of Kaiko, and Alex Wenham, FRM, Digital Assets product & strategy lead at Bloomberg, discussed the evolution of cryptocurrency market data and its importance in shaping the future of finance, along with other crypto developments. 🟣 A leading cryptocurrency market data provider, founded in 2014, focuses on providing high-quality data to institutional clients such as regulators, banks and financial infrastructure providers. 🟣 Initially collecting data from centralized exchanges (CEX), Kaiko expanded to decentralized finance (DeFi) and decentralized exchanges (DEX). They now offer comprehensive data covering CEX, DeFi, and in-depth analysis to meet diverse market needs. 🟣 Traditional finance (TradFi) began showing interest in cryptocurrencies as investment assets and utilizing blockchain technology for asset tokenization in 2020-2021. 🟣 Bitcoin ETFs have experienced rapid growth and success since the beginning of the year, with Ethereum ETFs expected to be approved soon. 🟣 While Bitcoin and Ethereum have high liquidity, creating comprehensive cryptocurrency indices remains challenging due to liquidity issues and the need for institutional-grade custody solutions. 🟣 Kaiko is actively working on selecting reliable exchanges, ensuring the security of custody systems, and building high-quality asset pools. Careful asset selection is crucial for creating trustworthy indices for investors. 🟣 Kaiko Indices, a subsidiary of Kaiko, is setting new standards for the crypto market by issuing exchange rate indices regulated under the Benchmark Regulation (BMR), competing with index providers like CF Benchmarks to differentiate and lead in this market. 🟣 The crypto derivatives market is growing, with Deribit remaining the primary platform for cryptocurrency options trading. While over-the-counter (OTC) trading is significant, competition is increasing as major spot exchanges like Gemini and Bullish enter the derivatives market, offering more trading options. 🟣 Tokenization is opening new opportunities for the capital markets industry to develop operating systems and infrastructure. Blackrock's tokenization project exemplifies this potential. 🟣 Data providers will play a vital role in driving the future of tokenization, acting as intermediaries for blockchain contract execution and linking blockchain data with traditional financial market data systems. 🟣 Establishing data standards and integrating traditional market infrastructure with blockchain are key to developing a sustainable and reliable token market. Leaders from leading companies in the crypto industry, including Amber Group, AEVO, QCP, and Wintermute, came together to share their perspectives on the changing crypto market on topic of “CryptoShaping the Future of Crypto Trading” at REDeFiNE TOMORROW 2024. - Annabelle Huang observed that while DeFi has made significant progress, the proportion of on-chain trading volume compared to CEX (centralized exchanges) is still only a small fraction. However, all participants in the discussion are working to build the infrastructure to help DeFi continue to scale. - Yoann T. commented that hybrid DeFi platforms, which combine elements of CeFi (centralized finance) and DeFi, will be more successful than pure DeFi platforms. This is because CeFi serves as an educational starting point for most crypto users. He estimates that DeFi users make up only 1.4-1.5% of all crypto users, a figure that has not changed much in the past two years. - After the FTX incident, Wintermute increased its over-the-counter (OTC) trading and bilateral relationships, focusing on a few trusted exchanges with high liquidity and trading activity. - Amber Group has moved all client assets to an SPV fund structure, where assets are held by an independent custodian. This structure includes tripartite payment agreements with exchanges or mirror functions for credit lines. - QCP, led by Simon Nursey, started by offering OTC services directly to clients. They were early adopters of crypto options, working with platforms like Deribit. They now market make on various exchanges and are connected to platforms like Paradigm for block trades. - Annabelle Huang believes that the US ETFs are a signal and a stimulus for Bitcoin's liquidity. However, he noticed that Crypto native (such as Meme coins) are quite separate from the institutions that focus on ETFs. It is still a question for Crypto native about entering the new financial liquidity. - Yoann Turpin appreciates the transparency and fair launch of meme coins, with Wintermute's Meme coin Index (GMCI) measuring retail investor interest. Meme coins may account for 60-70% of crypto trading volume on some partner platforms. - Aevo listed derivatives contracts for several meme coins and is exploring options offerings to attract retail traders seeking high potential returns. They are also considering listing Wintermute's Meme coin Index. - Aevo will launch "Aevo Strategies" in the coming weeks, focusing on yield-generating products like covered call and basis trading strategies. Updates can be found on Aevo's Twitter. - The approval of more Crypto ETFs could lead to increased interest and investment from the general public, resulting in greater institutionalization of the market.
