SCG Sets Course to Become an AI-First Organization Every 10 years, a technology emerges that changes the world. AI took just over a year to achieve mass adoption. Many think AI will disrupt everything humans do. Even SCG, a 112-year-old organization with innovation in its DNA and a focus on innovation, has had to rouse itself to make the organization aware but not alarmed, and is working to make SCG an AI-first organization. SCG is prioritizing this and developing a medium-term AI plan as one of its main issues. SCG knows that if it doesn’t prepare adequately, there will certainly be problems in the future. Recently, The Story Thailand had the opportunity to observe SCG’s employee preparation through the “AI Day: Game Changer of the Decade” event held at the headquarters, with 1,000 SCG people participating both online and offline. The event included a full-day seminar and showcased AI works from various SCG departments for employees to experience and recognize the organization’s progress and modernity. The AI Day event is the starting point of a series of activities SCG has planned. It’s an event to open up the topic, allowing everyone to understand, feel, and experience AI without fear, but daring to jump in and experiment. The organization assures that it will support various aspects including policies, budgets, technology, and other facilities. SCG recognizes that what it has had over others all along is “quality people”. If these quality people can be empowered by AI, SCG believes it can survive for another 100 years. In the next 3 years, SCG will be seen as a tiger with wings. SCG is enhancing AI capabilities in its personnel at all 3 levels, from executives to super users and mass users. It will create a foundation, inspire, and prepare tools for use because AI isn’t replacing people, but people need to know how to use AI. Thammasak Sethaudom, President and CEO of SCG, said that in the past, SCG talked about Decarbonization, Green Growth, Inclusive Green Growth because SCG is an industrialist. However, looking around the world, there’s another very important “D” that will change the world – Digitalization, especially AI. It’s not just Decarbonization that’s impacting; it’s the broader picture of doing business, but there’s also Digitalization, especially AI. Therefore, for SCG, AI is important. “I’ve been randomly experimenting and testing AI for a while to see how powerful it is and how much it will change the way we work. From attending the World Economic Forum, I found that AI is a main topic that world leaders are discussing, both in terms of changing work methods, changing the business competition landscape, and the potential dangers.” “Don’t be afraid of AI, but be afraid of people who know how to use AI. Because people who know how to use AI will work much more efficiently than those who don’t. AI will change every job, from trade and sales to factory production, including administrative work.”

“Hard Does Not Mean Impossible” In a time when the entire world is striving towards a “Net Zero Society,” The climate change crisis has had a notable impact on people everywhere. Despite the ‘Paris Agreement’ to prevent the global temperature from rising above 1.5 degrees Celsius, the current temperature has already reached 1.42 degrees Celsius. This makes Thailand’s goal of achieving a “Net Zero Society” by 2065 appear increasingly challenging. The approach of “Accelerate for Change” is essential to halt the rising global temperature and achieve the target more quickly. The goal is “possible” if we “change.” The concept of chasing change, pursuing possibility is illustrated through the journey of ‘Projeen – Atthaya Thitikul’ on her path to the global stage. It begins with flashbacks showing competitions where ‘Projeen’ missed scoring opportunities. Despite facing obstacles, difficulties, challenges, and defeats, ‘Projeen’ has always believed that “hard does not mean impossible.” “I do not want to lose anymore” – Projeen’s Goal This signals the ‘readiness’ of both mind and body to achieve the goal of becoming a ‘world-class professional golfer.’ Projeen is determined and relentless in her efforts, yet she realizes that using the same old methods is insufficient for reaching the grand global stage. To reach the global level, one must “accelerate change to increase opportunities.” The state of Projeen and her team reflects this ‘change’ from traditional methods to ‘changing the way of thinking,’ fostering a shared belief that ‘hard does not mean impossible.’ They rise to ‘change their swings’ for longer shots and try new, more challenging things together as a team. Even though this ‘change’ may not yield immediate success, Projeen firmly believes that ‘every minute of action is an opportunity to get closer to the possibility.’ Eventually, her determination, dedication, and effort lead to success, as she becomes the “world’s number one female golfer” at the age of just 19. The story of Projeen is an inspiration and reinforces our belief that “rising to fight for a grand goal, such as striving for a ‘Net Zero Society,’ may be hard and challenging, but it is achievable and possible.” Prepare for the significant gathering at the “ESG Symposium 2024: Driving Inclusive Green Transition” event. This symposium aims to accelerate the transition to a Net Zero Society, enhancing our quality of life, fostering long-term business growth, and achieving a sustainable world through our collective efforts. Coming soon.

SCG announced its operating results for Q2/2024, demonstrating continuous improvement with increased sales and profit compared to the previous quarter, driven by economic recovery in Vietnam and Indonesia. SCG has enhanced business agility to navigate economic challenges, including a slow and concentrated domestic economic recovery and geopolitical conflicts. The company is increasing the use of alternative fuels, focusing on cost management, targeting high-potential businesses, leveraging AI to boost production efficiency, and offering attractive solutions to customers across ASEAN. Low Carbon Cement is being introduced to the global market, and the Vietnam petrochemical complex will resume testing operations in September. Thammasak Sethaudom, President and CEO of SCG, said, “SCG’s operating results for Q2/2024 have improved from the previous quarter due to increased sales volume from SCG Chemicals and stronger spending power in the ASEAN market, particularly in Vietnam and Indonesia. Furthermore, dividend income from SCG Investment contributed to a total revenue of 128,195 MB, an increase of 3% q-o-q, with a profit of 3,708 MB, up 53% q-o-q. For the first half of 2024, revenue was 252,461 MB, close to last year’s figure. The sales composition included 39% from SCG Chemicals, 27% from SCGP, 16% from SCG Cement and Green Solutions, 13% from SCG Smart Living & SCG Distribution and Retail, and 5% from SCG Decor. Despite SCG being impacted by the petrochemical trough and tensions from geopolitical conflicts, intense market competition from Chinese imports, and a slow domestic economic recovery due to weak spending power among the middle to low-income groups, SCG has actively enhanced its business agility and operational resilience through several strategic measures: 1.) Energy Cost Management, for example, the cement business in Thailand has increased the use of alternative fuels to 47%; 2.) Focus on Growth Potential Business, such as comprehensive solar energy solutions for residential markets, plants, and industrial estates; 3.) Improvement of Storage, Transportation, and Distribution of Products by employing technology for delivery planning and goods receipt to reduce work time, minimize damage, and reduce errors in the receipt and delivery process; 4.) Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Operation Efficiency, where SCG Chemicals utilizes AI solutions from REPCO NEX to precisely manage machinery maintenance, achieving 100% reliability; and 5.) Deliver solutions that meet both the functional and pricing needs of customers, such as CPAC’s compact concrete mixer trucks, which are designed for urban construction with narrow alleys, capable of transporting up to 2 cubic meters of concrete per trip, facilitating efficient cement usage and reducing waste.”

The spillover effect of THE OVER 5.1 BILLION USD PROJECT Long Son Commun, 10 July 2024, Straight asphalt roads connecting villages are equipped with CCTV cameras, new spacious houses spring up; people’s lives in Long Son island commune, Vung Tau are also changing every day… Partly thanks to the cooperation and contribution of Long Son Petrochemicals Company Limited (LSP) – the investor of the Long Son Petrochemicals Complex project. The project has a total investment of more than 5.1 billion USD and is expected to go into commercial operation around mid-year. LEARN AND GROW TOGETHER Long Son commune (Vung Tau city) has changed substantially in recent years since the Long Son Petrochemicals Complex project was implemented. According to Mr. Ha Huu Dung, the Secretary of Long Son Party Committee: “The appearance of Long Son that has changed the most is traffic. Village roads and alleys are asphalted and concreted to make it convenient for people to travel”. To ensure security and order in the area, in 2023, LSP sponsored the installation of 23 cameras on major roads. Thanks to that, the locality also promptly handled several traffic violations. In addition to sponsoring the installation of CCTV on roads, LSP also arranged a variety of community-oriented activities during project implementation, including vocational training for Long Son residents; waste segregation at source training; tree planting to create a green, clean, and beautiful environment; collaboration with units that provide medical assessment and treatment to people. Notably, a women’s cooperative has just been established in the commune, specializing in weaving basket products, selling them to tourists, and creating gifts. To assist people in stabilizing their lives, LSP has created a resettlement area in village 1 of Long Son commune, recruiting locals to work in jobs such as canteen sales, tree trimming, and security… Mr. Kulachet Dharachandra – General Director of LSP, stated that by implementing the project in Long Son island commune, which includes waste segregation at the source and planting trees, LSP hopes to become a decent citizen of this area. LSP has fulfilled its commitments by engaging in a variety of community-service activities. “LSP is dedicated to being a responsible corporate citizen rather than simply generating a profit” – shared by Mr. Kulachet Dharachandra. The company not only seeks to support the local community, but also to learn and grow with them.

LSP collaborated with DONRE to implement the Waste Segregation at source model at the administrative building of DONRE in BRVT Province Long Son Commune, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, recently, with the experience in implementing waste segregation models at the source in Long Son and its commitment to green manufacturing and sustainable operations, Long Son Petrochemicals or LSP has been chosen as a key partner in the design and execution of the waste segregation at source model at the administrative building of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DONRE) in Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province. Under the model at DONRE, the waste is categorized into three types. Each type of waste should be disposed of in separate bins for efficient collection and processing. The three waste categories are: - Food waste, including leftover and expired food - Recyclable waste, including paper, plastic, metal, and glass - Other waste, further divided into hazardous waste and general waste Once the waste segregation at source model is successfully implemented at DONRE of BRVT, it will be considered a role model, serving as the basis for proposing to replicate at the Ba Ria – Vung Tau Provincial Administrative Center and the offices of DONRE’s subordinate units. In contributing to the project, LSP aims to collaborate with DONRE to drive waste management toward a circular economy and sustainability. It also underscores LSP’s unwavering commitment to sustainability with a focus on ESG – environmental, social, and governance, through fostering a culture of responsible waste management. Regarding the efforts in driving Circular Economy in Actions, in 2023, LSP successfully implemented and handed over the Waste Segregation at Source- school model to Long Son 1 and Long Son 2 primary schools and the Waste Segregation at Source – Residential model to hamlet 1 in Long Son commune. These efforts are part of SCGC and LSP’s commitment within the framework of Public-Private Collaboration (PPC) that SCGC and LSP have cooperated with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), Dow Vietnam, and Unilever Vietnam to build a circular economy in plastic waste management in Vietnam. In 2024, LSP has also extended its support to implement the Waste Segregation at Source in three additional schools within the commune.

SCGP Achieves Carbon Footprint of Products Certification, including all Paper Packaging SKUs, Ready to Team Up with Customers to Minimize Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Promote Environmental Sustainability SCGP has received certification for the Carbon Footprint of Products manufactured in Thailand from The Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) or TGO, certifying that the Company can specify the amount of greenhouse gas emissions for a range of products, including pulp, printing and writing paper, packaging paper, paper packaging, foodservice packaging, and plastic packaging. This initiative supports customers in using packaging that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a sustainable world.   Wichan Jitpukdee, Chief Executive Officer of SCG Packaging Public Company Limited or SCGP, said that SCGP recognizes the importance of creating a low-carbon society, which aligns with the Company's goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050. SCGP is committed to quality business growth alongside the development of environmentally friendly innovative products and adherence to relevant measures to address climate change, such as those in the European Union, which require the disclosure of greenhouse gas emissions from products. This is to ensure the delivery of environmentally friendly packaging to customers and meet the demands of consumers who prioritize sustainable packaging choices.   Recently, SCGP has received Carbon Footprint of Products certification manufactured in Thailand from The Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) or TGO. These certified products include pulp, printing and writing paper, packaging paper, and plastic packaging, totaling 109 products. Additionally, SCGP has received carbon footprint certification for 16 printing and paper packaging producing processes, covering all paper packaging products under the Cradle to Gate (B2B) assessment. For the copy paper and foodservice packaging (Fest) products, 19 products have been certified under the Cradle to Grave (B2C) assessment. This certification provides consumers with information about the total greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire lifecycle of these products, from raw material sourcing, production processes, distribution, usage, to waste management after the end of life.   This Carbon Footprint of Products certification represents SCGP's commitment to collaborating with customers to develop packaging that reduces greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire supply chain. This initiative helps customers align their business operations with increasingly stringent environmental regulations enforced by governments in many countries. Additionally, the clear identification of greenhouse gas emissions facilitates consumers in making informed decisions to select products that contribute to mitigating environmental issues.
