Escapism is a XL experimental design tome featuring the project completed by BENSLEY in the last five years. I took some 40,000 photographs but only 500+ have made the cut. This OVERSIZED eXPeriMENTAL Portfolio of our
well established design atelier is largely unencumbered by my silly words, and
lets the pictures tell the story of our 25 latest resorts and other ventures.
This tome has been my passion for many years now, and is designed to be a
dream like presentation of our work to inspire and to be used. When Dorothy
crash landed upon the Land of Oz, her black and white monochromatic world of
Kansas turned to Technicolor. It is just that trippy happening, in the following
700+ pages, that means that you too may have turned the page to embark upon a
new land, i.e. the next BENSLEY project. The last few pages holds the
captions for all of our photographs, our secret sources, and some exquisitely rendered
drawings. Despite Einstein’s notion that the secret of creativity is knowing
how to hide your sources, I believe that nothing is new under the sun , everything
has history, and thus it is important to give credit where it is due.
For this book, I researched 100+ of the most popular and most current architectural,
landscape, interior designer tomes and I found that all have gorgeous photos,
but, for the most part, there are no people enjoying the spaces. With this book,
I escape the norm, by photographing animals and actors enjoying our designs,
so the reader can understand the scale of the space better. We design resorts as
theatrical stage sets for escapism, so why not show actors on our stage?
I realize that this book and our work is not for everyone. It is not intended to
be. I do, however, believe that our best work is coming soon . Enjoy it or not?...
