“I have been working for 3 years with Dusit International as Corporate Director of Engineering, normally looking after the hotels that are already open in

However I was also given the task the benchmarking of hotel operation according to an International standard accreditation program (called EC3Global ‘EarthCheck’ program). Looking into increase of efficiencies by reducing the utility cost and energy bill. Therefore
to become more cost effective, more productive, which however does not effect the guest (so the guest can still have the look and feel of quality).
His philosophy of management is to be a team player. He said “You have to be seen as a team player, to be approachable and create the position where people want to work with. You must engage yourself while empowering people to become part of the management. As one is not able to run 20 properties through micro-management on a daily basis.

Seated in a private bamboo pod, guests are invited to dine among Thailand’s rainforest while strung high above the ground with 360-degree views. In case that wasn’t enough, just wait until you watch your personal server deliver your meal via zip-line acrobatics.

Hotel operator is implementing the EarthCheck programme to introduce green tourism
All corporations seek business sustainability, and Dusit Thani international is hopeful that following the EarthCheck programme will allow it to achieve that goal. Under the programme - which requires the firm to take six steps to ensure that it does not harm the environment, and that it becomes a truly green hotel and helps to create green tourism in Thailand - it also aims to return benefits to society.
"To achieve this, we need cooperation from the local people in the areas in which we operate. We also need cooperation from business partners and tourists themselves. Dusit has properties in many top destinations in Thailand and overseas. Businesses do not need to just make money, but also to look for ways to contribute to communities and other stakeholders," said Juergen Seidel, Dusit Thani's corporate director of engineering.

Seidel was appointed to take responsibility for the company's ongoing environmental efforts, which require it to identify risks, record and monitor impacts, and implement environmental and social sustainability measures.
The EarthCheck programme was adopted four years ago to help the group, which now operates 10 Dusit properties in Thailand and two overseas. After four years, the group has achieved the Silver certificate, and more is to be done as the group aims for the Platinum certificate. To Seidel, teamwork is the major contributor to this success.

"The Dusit properties may not have achieved Silver Certification if [the teams at the different properties] didn't participate," he said. "I must say the most to be proud of is that we have teams in every property that participated with this programme. So, it's not a one-man show. I believe in our team and I communicate with them on a routine basis," he added.

“But measuring success in this field is not a straightforward process,” Mr Donavanik continues. “Dusit’s search for an agency who could quantify the results of its endeavours led the hotel group to EarthCheck, a credible, internationally respected certification programme.”
"There are no short cuts, no ways to buy your way in; it's a matter of being able to prove the integrity of an organisation's operational practices year-in and year-out, and then be willing to have everything verified by an independent, third party auditor. By taking a scientific approach to measuring the effectiveness of their sustainability practices, Dusit International will be able to identify where they are out-performing other operators and where room for improvement remains.”
Dusit appointed its Corporate Director of Engineering, Mr Juergen E. Seidel, as its Corporate EarthCheck Champion. He took responsibility for ensuring the company’s ongoing environmental performance, identifying risks, recording and monitoring impacts, and implementing environmental and social sustainability measures.
“After 4 years of affiliation with the EarthCheck programme, ten Dusit properties in Thailand and two of its international locations have achieved Silver Certification from EarthCheck,” says Mr Seidel. “These hotels and resorts continuously strive to remain environmentally, socially and economically sustainable, as proven by the achievement of this prestigious recognition.”

Dusit International has strengthened its ties with leading environmental management company EarthCheck. The result is a strategic Asian alliance that will deliver far reaching benefits across the region and - it is hoped - help the hotel sector take better care of host destinations. In 2012, the Dusit Executive Development Centre will begin offering EarthCheck sustainability training courses to companies outside of the Dusit group.

Specialist courses cater to the needs of Housekeeping, Engineering, F&B and Concierge staff, while management courses will help executive level staff better understand ways to reduce improve operational efficiencies, better manage their risk profile and meet the growing demands for transparency in GHG emissions reporting.

Each year, approximately 5,000 stakeholders pass through the doors of the company's training centre and hospitality school. That number is now likely to grow as a result of their becoming a regional training hub for EarthCheck, as the alliance allows Dusit trainers to instruct the staff of other industry players.

"Although most hotels are attempting to reduce the environmental impact of their operations, keeping abreast of regulatory change and technological innovation can be an expensive exercise," explained Stewart Moore, CEO of EarthCheck. "When EarthCheck was scouting for a regional training partner in Asia, it made sense to leverage Dusit's infrastructure for the greater good."

  • South East Asian Tourism Going For A Greener Image

CAAI News Media, Auckland New Zealand

In Thailand, environmentally-friendly policies are becoming more high tech, with homemade biofuels, intelligent lighting, and organically-fertilised herb gardens all wooing tourists concerned about their carbon footprint.
'People are saying: 'If I want to travel, I'd better make it environmentally conscientious,'' said Mr. Juergen Seidel, a director for Six Senses, which has hotels and resorts in Thailand and Vietnam.

Six Senses plans by 2020 to produce enough clean energy to power all of its operations as well as feed electricity into local grids, said Mr Seidel.
'Every year there's a 10 or 20 per cent increase of travellers in this niche market we're providing,' he told AFP.
A United Nations report last year found that tourism, in particular air travel, accounted for about five per cent of global emissions of carbon dioxide - the main greenhouse gas that traps the sun's heat and fuels global warming.
However as the travel industry adopts more sustainable practices, there are so many different 'green' standards on the market right now that tourists are left scratching their heads.

  • Resort aims for Maldives eco rescue

    The TIMES (June 7, 2008)

Is an ambitious carbon-neutral project a dream too far; asks Tom Chesshyre.
ENVIRONMENTALISTS have reacted with scepticism to claims that a Maldives resort will be “carbon free” by 2010.
They say that Soneva Fushi, part of the upmarket Six Senses Resorts & Spa group, will have to defy the odds to produce enough electricity to be self-sufficient on an isolated Indian Ocean island.

“I can't believe anything in the Maldives could ever be carbon free,” said Jeff Gazzard, board member of theAviation Environment Federation. He said that winds and tides were unlikely to be strong enough to power turbines, and that transportation of materials to the island would also contribute to emissions.
But Six Senses, which runs 12 hotels worldwide, says that its scheme to create a carbon-neutral resort is for real. It showed Times Travel detailed plans to build wind turbines and solar panels, utilise cold water chilled HVAC for air-conditioning, use air vents to keep some parts of the resort chilled, and improve desalination techniques.
The resort already offsets the carbon dioxide from the flights of guests, which goes towards energy projects in India. The Maldives is one of the most at-risk countries from climate change, with most of its 1,200 islands just a metre above sea level. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change believes that sea levels will rise between 18-59cm (7-23in) by 2100.
Soneva Fushi has spent more than £500,000 on eco-improvements, but the resort has saved just as much in fuel bills. Juergen Seidel, of Six Senses, said: “This is just a start. We have done the easy part, making the initial energy savings, now it will get more difficult.”

The ‘the Green Hotel’, organised by “Hotels & REstaurants MAGazine”. Sofia hotel Holiday hosted the event, which got together around 200 representatives of investors, hotel managers, tourist sector organisations and the media. The international conference was officially opened by Mrs Stela Baltova, vice-chairperson of the State Tourism Agency, who welcomed the participants.
One of the topics that attracted the biggest interest was the lecture by Denimila Dencheva, senior expert at the Ministry of Environment and Water, on ecological marking and the issuing of a certificate for a green hotel.
Over an hour was devoted to the presentation of Jurgen Seidel, head of engineering, innovation and environmental protection at the international five-start chain Six Senses Resorts&Spas, who focused on the main characteristics which make a hotel ecology-friendly and how one can profit from multiple use of resources.
Professor Fausto Faggioli, from Italy, spoke about the experience of the Emilia Romagna province.
Lawrence Hefler from Florida spoke about the marketing advantages of green hotels in the USA. Mr Hefler’s name is linked to the branding of companies such as Hilton, Disney, American Express to mention but few.
Kamen Chipev from the Time-Ecoproject foundation described the opportunities for ecological project funding, and Boyan Rashev, managing partner in Denkstatt Bulgaria, outlined the step by step procedures from the initiation of an idea for a green hotel to its actual construction.

Svetla Slavova, marketing manager, Balkan Hotel Management Company
"I would like to thank Hotels & REstaurants MAGazine for the greatly organised Green hotel conference! I’m grateful for this seminar, that you organised and for the great practical value of the presentations by Mr Jurgen Seidel and Mr Fausto Faggioli!"

    Julia Marton-Lefèvre, Director General, IUCN

Biodiversity plays an important role in the day-to-day life of a
hotel: from the food in the restaurant and wood in furniture and
fittings, to the amenities in the spa, the products of biodiversity
are everywhere inside hotels. Outside, plants and animals
make a hotel’s public areas and gardens attractive for guests,
while beyond the hotel gate, national parks, green spaces,
coasts and natural habitats provide guests with opportunities
    for recreation and enjoyment.
The purpose of this guide is to help owners and managers of
small and large hotels, located in all areas, from cities to
mountain to coastal areas, to conserve nature. In particular, it is
designed to guide the sustainable use of biological resources in
    the day-to-day operations of hotels.
This guide is meant to complement the many tools that are
already available to help you reduce environmental impacts in
your hotel, by using appropriate siting, design and construction
practices, and by improving management of energy and water
consumption, and disposal of wastewater and solid wastes.

    The Carbon-Neutral Vacation
Travelers are running into an uncomfortable reality: Going green means sacrificing some luxuries. The tough choices ahead as resorts try to cater to eco-conscious consumers.
The Soneva Fushi resort in the Maldives.
Those moves are expected to cost $1 million and to have paid for themselves through lower fuel bills in two years, says Juergen Seidel, director of the carbon-reduction program for Six Senses Resorts & Spas, the Bangkok-based company that owns Soneva Fushi and several other resorts.

Soneva Fushi also plans later this year to start slapping customers with a mandatory surcharge to pay to offset the customers' flight-related emissions, Six Senses officials say. Working with a nonprofit group, Six Senses plans to use the money to build its own emission-offsetting projects, such as a wind turbine in nearby India, rather than buying commoditized offsets on the international carbon market.

More controversial are moves that might affect guests directly. One is a system to turn off airconditioning, in a villa if the door is kept open for more than a minute. Soneva Fushi plans to install the system in 2008 or 2009 -- and then to have to explain it to some of its well-heeled guests.
"The guest needs to be educated. 'If you want to be cooled, close the door,' " Mr. Seidel says.
"Some of the guests, they think, 'We paid the money and now the resort needs to provide me the services regardless of what I do.' We are not doing this to be stingy. We don't want to have a finger pointed at us saying, 'You could have done this but didn't.' "

Speech made by Travis Engen, Chairman of IBLF, at IBLF's 15th anniversary dinner on September 14, 2005.
At Alcan we consider ourselves a leader in the management of our impacts on society in areas such as water, emissions, employment practices and community relations and as our business practices and our social reporting. But having said that there is not a day that goes by that fails to yield opportunities to learn and do better. The main point that I would like to make, however, is that our company and your enterprise do not operate in a vacuum and each of our reputations is diminished if other businesses fail to make progress on these issues. I believe that this creates a strong incentive to work with other companies to raise standards in our international markets.

As the IBLF moves through its 15th year it is clear to all of us that these questions are far more important today than they were even five years ago, let alone when the IBLF was launched by the Prince of Wales and a group of business visionaries in 1990. So where does the IBLF fit in - in a world where corporate responsibility and social engagement is being promoted by many more organisations?

The 39-hectare site includes residential, retail, hotel, commercial, cultural and civic elements and is part of a new district near Kingdom Tower in Jeddah.

Atelier Ten carried out initial solar exposure and wind flow studies to assist in setting street widths, grid patterns, massing and fenestration orientation. A holistic approach towards infrastructure planning included load intensity and spatial projection mapping for future energy use on a block by block basis and per building type.

An ‘energy highway’ connecting site-wide utility services will share the load across the development as daily usage patterns shift between different building types. This will ensure consistent loading for decentralised energy plants and allow them to run at optimum performance while increasing resilience.

Water management is critical in Saudi Arabia, and our infrastructure strategy will achieve a 50 per cent reduction in potable water consumption over local regulations. Key elements of the water reduction strategy include specification of drought-resistant landscapes and efficient low-flow equipment, reuse of wastewater, and the capture and recycling of condensate from refrigeration coils as greywater.
