Manchester United defeated nine-man Southampton 9-0 at Old Trafford — only the third time the scoreline has occured in Premier League history.

Southampton are the only club to lose by nine goals twice in the league, having suffered the results in consecutive seasons.

The victory also makes United the first club to win by a nine-goal margin in the Premier League twice — equalling their record from 26 years ago against Ipswich.

What happened?

On his first Premier League start, 19-year-old Swiss midfielder Alexandre Jankewitz was sent off after only 79 seconds, triggering a collapse for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka opened the scoring with his first goal at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani also found the net either side of a Jan Bednarek own goal before half-time.

“Keep going, boys,” shouted Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and United ended the match in ruthless fashion, scoring five goals in the final 21 minutes of the game.

Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay added their names to the scoresheet, before Bednarek was also sent off, following a lengthy VAR check, for a foul on Martial in the penalty area. Bruno Fernandes converted the subsequent, with Martial and Dan James completing the rout against a helpless nine-man Southampton side.

Southampton have lost four consecutive Premier League games for the first time since April 2018. Although they’ve lost by nine goals for the second time in the last two seasons, Wednesday night's result is their biggest ever away defeat in any competition.

What is the Premier League win margin record?

United were the first team to win 9-0 in the Premier League, after they beat Ipswich by that margin in 1995.

Last season, Leicester City equalled the scoreline in their 9-0 win over Southampton at St Mary's, with the Saints suffering the same result against United on Wednesday night.

It is the fifth time Manchester United have won by nine goals in their history and the only time they have had a larger success was a 10-0 victory against Anderlecht in 1956.

What has been said?

After the match, Hasenhuttl said: “What can I say? It is horrible but we stood up after the first 9-0 and we have to do that again. I said at the time we do not need it again but when we have it again you have to take it.”

Meanwhile, Solskjaer said: “We shared the goals between the players. When the game starts like it does it’s always if you can get the first goal as we have seen so many examples of 10 men closing up shop and getting a draw.

“We’ve been waiting for them to show the magic and it was a night for them to go and enjoy it. We’ve not had many times where we could just enjoy the second half.

“You get lots of confidence from a performance like this, scoring goals is always good for a team.”

Who are both sides playing next?

Both sides play again in the Premier League on Saturday.

United host Everton while Southampton make another away trip, this time against Newcastle.
