CLEMSON — There is one freshman at Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney describes as “Steady Eddie.”

Since he got on campus back in January, freshman wideout Bryant Wesco has been the talk of campus. His playmaking ability from the spring carried over to fall camp and continued Saturday during the Tigers’ two-hour scrimmage at Memorial Stadium.

“He does not carry himself like a freshman,” Swinney said. “He is a very mature young player. He is right there in the mix.”

According to Swinney, Wesco is in the mix to be one of 14-ranked Clemson’s starters when they play top-ranked Georgia on Aug. 31 in Atlanta.

“We have about six guys that could start. They are all kind of 1-A,” he said. “They all could start. Five of them have started. Wesco, obviously, has not started. He just got here.

“But we kind of got a group of six (wide receivers) were any of those six could start for us. It is a deep group. It is very competitive. Then there is the seventh and eighth guy and how that is going to shake out.”

The six wide receivers that could start today for the Tigers are Antonio Williams, Tyler Brown, Troy Stellato, Adam Randall, Cole Turner and Wesco.

“He is just a kid that it is not too big for him,” Swinney said. “It is a really good situation to roll some guys and not have any drop off. Just to be able to keep playing and not even have to worry about who is in the game in some of these cases.

“We have some good skill at that position. I am proud of him. He had another good day today. He just keeps progressing.”

Wesco came to Clemson in January weighing 175 pounds. When he reported for camp at the end of last month, he weighed in at 185 pounds.

But do not worry, he has not lost any of his speed.

“Yeah, he is a fast kid,” Swinney said. “Cole is probably the fastest on the team, but they are probably right there.”
