Ide peluncuran situs The Conversation Indonesia dan pendirian Yayasan The Conversation Indonesia terbangun sesudah pertemuan pada tahun 2015 antara Professor Sangkot Marzuki dan pencetus ide sekaligus pendiri The Conversation, Andrew Jaspan–mantan pemimpin redaksi The Age dan The Observer. Edisi pertama The Conversation hadir di Australia di bawah The Conversation Media Group pada 2011.

The idea of launching The Conversation Indonesia website and establishing Yayasan The Conversation Indonesia came about after a meeting in 2015 between Professor Sangkot Marzuki and The Conversation's initiator and founder, Andrew Jaspan - former editor-in-chief of The Age and The Observer. The first edition of The Conversation was established in Australia under The Conversation Media Group in 2011.

As a scientist who supports the development of a national scientific culture, Professor Sangkot, who was also the Chair of AIPI at the time, sees The Conversation to hold a vital role in developing the capacity of scientists to communicate science to the public.

"The Conversation Indonesia's mission to explore the research results of Indonesian scientists and disseminate them in a language that is easy to understand, is in line with AIPI's efforts to encourage a culture of scientific excellence in Indonesia. Of course, the presence of The Conversation Indonesia also helps give more space to Indonesian scientists to share their findings. Many of these findings are very relevant to solving problems faced by society, so it is very important for people to know about them," said Professor Sangkot.

Professor Sangkot merangkul tokoh pers nasional Aristides Katoppo, serta ahli biologi konservasi Jatna Supriatna, dan pengacara Sri Indrastuti Hadiputranto yang menyambut ide pendirian The Conversation Indonesia.

Professor Sangkot reached out to national press figure Aristides Katoppo, as well as conservation biologist Jatna Supriatna, and lawyer Sri Indrastuti Hadiputranto who welcomed the idea of establishing The Conversation Indonesia.

"Actually, there has long been a desire and intention in various circles to address how Indonesia's vast and possibly very useful research results can be more widely known outside academic circles. By popularising selected research that benefits society, Indonesian researchers and scientists fulfil not only their responsibility to their institutions but also their social responsibility. We have a saying, 'you can't love, if you don't know', so with this effort it is hoped that Indonesian research can be better known, and thus more loved," said Aristides.

Situs The Conversation Indonesia diluncurkan dengan tim beranggotakan empat orang, dipimpin Editor Eksekutif Prodita Kusuma Sabarini, di bawah dukungan dari The Conversation Media Group.

The Conversation Indonesia website was launched with a team of four, led by Executive Editor Prodita Kusuma Sabarini, under the support of The Conversation Media Group.
