Three Mushrooms

The toilets resemble three mushrooms that sprouted from the forest around Yoyogi-Hachiman shrine.
Despite being built along the main thoroughfare of Yamate-Dori, they sit at the footsteps that lead to the shrine. The impression of mushrooms creates a sense of harmony with the forest in the background.
Having three separate toilets with circulation space in between makes it easy to navigate. Connecting paths with no dead-ends also allow good visual connection, creating a safe environment and preventing crime.
By securing ample space and by equipping elderly and parental functions that are usually only available in accessible toilets within each toilet ensure that the facility is truly public and accessible by everyone.
伊東豊雄

FUJITSUKA Mitsumasa

Born in 1941. After graduating from The University of Tokyo, Department of Architecture in 1965, worked at Kiyonori Kikutake Architect and Associates. Started Urban Robot in 1971, which was renamed to Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects in 1979.

Major works include Sendai Mediatheque, TOD’s Omotesando Building, Tama Art University Library (Hachioji), ‘Minna no Mori’ Gifu Media Cosmos, National Taichung Theater (Taiwan).

Notable awards include Architecture Institute of Japan Prize, Venice Biennale Golden Lion, The Royal Institute of British Architects Royal Gold Medal, The Asahi Prize, Premium Imperiale in Honor of Prince Takamatsu, Pritzker Architecture Prize, and UIA Gold Medal.

Established a private architecture school, Ito Juku in 2011 as a platform to think about the future of cities and architecture.

Maintenance

MAINTENANCE

Public toilets must stand the test of time. In addition to our focus on designing impressive facilities, we at THE TOKYO TOILET believe that providing a comfortable user experience through cleaning and maintenance is equally important. The Nippon Foundation, the Shibuya City Government and the Shibuya Tourism Association will work together to maintain these facilities. We will also work with professional toilet inspectors to periodically survey the toilets to ensure we are providing the best user experience.
