ABC has released the first official promo for The Conners (aka Roseanne minus Roseanne), and for a show about a low-income family that just lost its matriarch, it’s… surprisingly upbeat.
Underscored by the song “Life is a Highway” (because why not?), the 30-second promo offers a glimpse of what life will be like for Darlene, Jackie and the rest of the family now that Roseanne is out of the picture. (Roseanne Barr recently revealed in an interview that her character dies of an opioid overdose, though this hasn’t been confirmed by the network.)
Of course, the departure of Roseanne Barr — who was fired in May over a racist tweet about former Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett — isn’t The Conners‘ only casting shake-up. Xosha Roquemore (The Mindy Project), who played DJ’s wife Geena on the Roseanne revival, will not return for its spinoff. In her place will be relative newcomer Maya Lynne Robinson. Additionally, Juliette Lewis (Secrets and Lies) will enter the fold as David’s never-before-seen girlfriend Blue.
The Conners premieres Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 8/7c on ABC. Hit PLAY on the first official promo above, then drop a comment with your thoughts below: Will you tune in to see how the family fares without Roseanne?
HA!! I love that they addressed *the* question on many viewers minds: How did a low income family HAVE ALL THAT MONEY TO SPEND EVERY HALLOWE’EN??
Looking forward to this.
No Roseanne, NO SHOW!’
When will ABC understand that? The vast majority of us watch only for ROSEANNE!!!
Lots of talent int he cast. Life goes on. THE CONNERS could do very well for ABC., but we must accept Roseanne is gone. I can easily do that.
This Alan Scott is total troll, see him blathering on many stories here. Pay him no mind lol
LOL, ok — I was over her death immediately
cannot wait for THE CONNERS!
In the reboot, I found Roseanne’s character to be shrill for the sake of shrill. I’ll be watching without her.
While she was my favorite in the original series, I agree that she was definitely the stiffest if the cast, I didn’t feel as though she found her groove through the initial episodes of the revival. I’ll definitely be watching and if it’s good I’ll stick with it
When will people understand that because the show had already been renewed ABC had to pay the main cast whether they worked or not. Some advertising revenue to cover costs is still better than none at all.
I don’t know if that’s true. I thought the final season without Dan was terrible and after a few episodes, I stopped watching. I watch for John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf more than anyone else. Roseanne was a terrible actress (much like how Jerry Seinfeld is a terrible actor) surrounded by talented actors and good writing. Everyone is back but her. I’m more than willing to see where this goes as are many people I’ve talk with about the show. We will see.
John Goodman was in many episodes of the final season. Dan wasn’t “killed off” until the last 5 minutes of the finale.
Yes, and you won”t shut up about it!
A very polarizing event. Many will not watch the Conners without Roseanne. Many others will tune in and cheer her death. But, I think the latter won’t stick around long.
And many will watch BECAUSE she is gone.
This is going to tank so badly….
By episode 6.
Strong start, then will bleed viewers. By episode 6, the show should be leveled out. My guess is below Voice and NCIS’ demos. The Gifted and Flash will likely be close by…
I think it’ll settle above the majority of ABCs line up, but won’t be the hit it was last season. I think it’ll wind up in Modern Family range, ratings wise
The funniest thing about this is when Roseanne was showing gays in loving relationships 20 yrs ago, the bigots were going out of their minds. Now that she’s one of “them” they’re losing them again for the exact opposite reason.
So… no Jerry or Andy again this season?
No, won’t be watching. It won’t be the same. Good luck to the cast members though. Hope it is a hit for them.
Why is everyone so obsessed with Andy and Jerry? They were very minor characters to begin with.
Love the Conners, can’t wait.
So do I ; this promo is groovy ! I liked the humor and the rythm ! Can’t wait to see them back :)
I have never watched Rosanne. No offense to her, but I found her difficult to watch.Just not my cup of tea. Her politics, left or right (and let’s be honest, she’s swung both ways) never bothered me. I do understand her appeal. But the remainder of the cast is so good, I might tune in.
I wish I had a time machine and could see into the very near future so I could actually mark the day on my calendar that this show gets cancelled and I get to stop reading about it.
The day of our collective deliverance is nigh, my dear children. Any day now, any day now, we shall be released.
