Tim Allen Mulls Home Improvement Revival, Whether Tim Taylor Is Still ‘Relevant in the Mike Baxter World’
Tim Allen‘s grunting days may not be over: The Last Man Standing star says that he remains open to a Home Improvement revival.
“I always think about it, because I still talk to everybody involved,” Allen recently told TVLine. “The question I have is, ‘Is it still relevant? Is Tim Taylor relevant in the Mike Baxter world?’ Because Mike Baxter is like a real version of Tim Taylor; he’s not such a joke. And the [Outdoor Man] vlogs are like Mike’s version of Tool Time done as a web series.”
As for how he’d like to see Home Improvement return? “I like the idea of doing it as a one-off, like a one-hour movie [versus a full-fledged revival series],” Allen said. “I like the idea of finding out where the boys are now, and where… Tool Time would be in today’s world. I just think it’s a marvelous idea, and all the actors think it’s a great idea.”
Of course, any hypothetical comeback would have to be done without former cast member Earl Hindman, who played the Taylors’ fenced-in next-door neighbor Wilson; the character actor died in 2003 following a battle with lung cancer. “God rest him,” Allen said. [pmc_inline_gallery]
It should be noted that a Home Improvement revival is not in active development. Allen’s current comedy, Last Man Standing, is now in Season 8. Should it return for Season 9 (which is currently “a safe bet”), it will surpass Home Improvement in terms of number of seasons — a fact that isn’t lost on Allen. “I can’t even describe how cool it is, but I don’t want to take away from [Home Improvement‘s legacy],” he said. “It’s, like, ‘Who would’ve thought?’ I just can’t believe it.”
Home Improvement ran for eight seasons (and a total of 204 episodes) on ABC, from September 1991 through May 1999. During its run, it was nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards, including a nod for Outstanding Lead Actor (for Allen), four nods for Outstanding Lead Actress (for Patricia Richardson) and two nods for Outstanding Comedy Series. Reruns continue to air on CMT, Laff TV and UPtv.

My long standing meta idea for a Home Improvement revival is someone puts an epic fail compilation of Tool Time (which was a small local show) online and it becomes a viral hit resulting in a network wanting to reboot Tool Time.

I have dreamed about a Home Improvement revival for so long. That show was and still is my most favorite comedy show of all time ever. I have watched all 203 episodes at least 50 times and I keep watching them over and over. Whenever I need some comedy I usually go to Home Improvement. Those characters are so very dear to me. The Taylors are probably my most favorite TV family of all time.
I loved how they tackled serious subjects like death, cancer etc. but always without being too depressing. That show just had such a great balance of humor, emotion and love.
Like I said I would give anything to see those characters again. This would mean the world to me.

I’m worried about you. You’re wandering around in the woods with a skin face on ready to give up your soul for some Tool Time. Aren’t even any t.v.s for miles. Anyways your soul is spoken for and I suggest you start looking for some higher power than 90s comedies or a woman with crazy eyes and no hair that has a thing for dead groupies. We watched every episode of Home Improvement and Last Man Standing. Best show ever. We watched it together or DVD if we weren’t going to be home. Tim Allen is a natural comedian and we were miserable when the network cancelled our Tool Man.
When my son’s were young we rarely missed an episode. Now I am older I catch the reruns every opportunity and remember all the times the kids and I laid on the floor in the family room and had a good laugh and I get to laugh again.
Don’t compare Home Improvement and Last Man. While I’ll admit the viewing landscape has changed, Home improvement would still get huge numbers by today’s standards and be one of the highest rated sitcoms on TV. Last Man would get the same numbers as it is currently getting even if it aired back when Home Improvement was on, and would’ve been lucky to air its initial order of eps (usually 13, but Last Man may have been a full season pickup when it was signed). Plus, Home Improvement was hilarious, and Last Man is, occasionally, mildly amusing.
Last Man Standing is the best show currently on t.v. even without the original Mandy who was great on the show. Home Improvement was great too. I would love to see a movie that showed where they are today. Great cast on both backed by great writing. I enjoy seeing Tim Allen’s transition from brand new actor in the first season of Home Improvement to where he is today.
I loved the former Mandy, she was hilarious. Not impressed with the new Mandy, but I’m a diehard fan until the end.

I would love a reboot of Home Improvement, similar to Fuller House. Let Tim be a grandpa, considering retirement, and Jill terrified what he will destroy if he is home all the time.

Enough with revivals, already. Will and Grace stopped being funny after the first season. Murphy Brown was a dismal failure. The only one that seems to have worked is The Connors, but can it even be considered a revival anymore? I think it would technically be a spin-off now.
I would love to see where the Taylor family is now even if it is a one shot. I’d want to see what all the other family [meet some of Tim’s brothers we never met]/friends are up too, as well.

Since Wilson was the best part of the show, I say no to bringing it back. Also, we need to be making shows with more diversity not bringing back shows that never had a single character that was anything other than white and middle class.

You do know there are entire towns in the USA that have no other color than white. Why can’t we have a show that shows the actual layout of our country? I’m sick and tired of having to add color to everything just to add color. Do you know what the actual percentage of races are in the states? Black and brown people are very well represented. Over represented in fact. That’s just the truth.
Well, if you’re not straight, white, and male in America the ‘politics’ smacks you in the cohones every minutes of the day. So, why shouldn’t we speak about it? We’re certainly not going to just take it anymore.

Yes, without hesitation I would be sitting in front of my TV waiting with bated breath. I loved that show back in the 90’s and was sad to see it go. I think a reboot would be a resounding success!
No. Isn’t Last Man Standing technically already a Home Improvement reboot as is? Sure, no neighbor giving sage advice, but both shows are identical.

I noticed the similarities between the shows early on, three kids, long suffering wife, a job that allows him to indulge in his passions and speak his mind to the camera, but I didn’t really mind because Home Improvement was one of my favorites. While I think the newer show is alright, I think HI was funnier and had a better concept and over all cast. I would love a reunion movie.
I’m not sure I NEED a Home Improvement revival although I watched the show religiously back in the day, but a movie to see where the characters are would be kind of cool to see.

While I no longer watch Last Man Standing since Molly Ephraim, the real star of the show was replaced, I would welcome a Home Improvement revival and would at least watch the first episode.

I think last man standing is so much better but I would see what do on home improvement but never will it be as great as last man standing. I really hope season 9 an more of last man standing goes on

Just leave it alone – quit with the remakes. Home Improvement was fine how it ended. It would be nice if they came up with only original series ideas instead of thinking they can make a previous hit show better. Shows me that they’re just being lazy
