Was Jared Padalecki Truly Blindsided/ ‘Gutted’ by Jensen Ackles’ Supernatural Spinoff News? Or Is It All Just a Joke?
Is the Supernatural bromance in trouble? Or is Jared Padalecki simply and impressively (we hope!) commiting to a Twitter bit?
Hours after the new broke that Supernatural vet Jensen Ackles and his wife Danneel are developing a prequel spinoff for The CW that will follow young versions of Sam and Dean’s parents, John and Mary, Padalecki @’ed his former TV bro, claiming that while he was “excited” by the news, he wished he didn’t first hear about it via Twitter:

When a fan contended that Padalecki’s tweet “has GOTTA be a bad joke,” the actor QT’d, “No. It’s not. This is the first I’ve heard about it. I’m gutted.”

As of 11:30 pm ET, well over an hour later, those two tweets were still up, neither retracted nor recontextualized as jokes. We’re off to bed here on the East Coast, so I am sure you will all keep us posted!
Padalecki — who currently headlines The CW’s Walker — fired off a third tweet, which has since been deleted, at Robbie Thompson, the Supernatural co-executive producer who will pen the prospective series. “Et tu brute? Wow. What a truly awful thing you’ve done,” it read. “#Bravo you coward.”
In announcing the prequel project, Ackles said in a statement, “When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”
Supernatural creator Eric Kripke himself championed the news, tweeting, “When @JensenAckles first told me this story, I loved it. He & @DanneelHarris & @rthompson1138 are the perfect people to make it. (The other perfect person is too busy Texas Rangering.) Thanks for carrying the torch, guys, go kick it in the ass. Proud of you.”
To be fair the show has nothing to do with Sam and Dean. It’s just a project Jensen has felt passionate about pursuing. Should he have told Jared? Yeah probably. But Jared has moved on in his career also. Producing a new series in the supernatural universe isn’t like he’s rebooting the parent show and saying no Sam’s allowed. Lol
I think “to be fair”, you tell your co-star of 15 years you are doing a spin-off to the show the both of you will be forever associated months after it wraps. Just out of courtesy.

Pretty sure he was serious. Jared is known to have Twitter rants every now and then. Plus why delete something if it’s a joke? I knew they weren’t that close..
I actually thought it was a bit until he tweeted the one at Robbie and then deleted (also I don’t know what the endgame would be if this was a big joke, people were already having negative reactions to the announcement)
There are work-friends, and friend-friends. Sadly, after 15 years together, they appear to be the former.
Did he lose their phone numbers that he had to tweet about it? Yeah they should’ve told him but the fact he’s a lead on a new show seems like a pretty good reason for him not to be involved.
Agree. Don’t pound on an already crappy situation. Also, it’s just an announcement. Who knows if it would even get picked up for a full season. There are ways to work this out without going on Twitter.

This has nothing to do with Jared, so he needs to cool his heels. Jared and Jensen were close friends and co-workers and spent the last 15 years pretty much attached at the hips (even living together at one point)… but that doesn’t mean Jared is entitled to know every detail of Jensen’s personal or professional life.
I certainly don’t check in with former coworkers (and even current/past friends) when I make professional choices.
You might if your new project was grounded in a former project that all of you developed together for years. Most people would.
Not at all. I worked and developed a project from the ground up at my last job for six years. After I left, did they talk to me or consult with me about what was going on about it? Of course not.
It would be one thing if they were continuing the show and recasted Sam, but they’re not. This literally has nothing to do with Jared.
Recasted is not a word. It is recast. Past tense of cast is cast.
Sorry, but it does have something to do with Jared and also Eric Kripke. The spinoff is called “The Winchesters” and is connected to a character that Jared played for 15 seasons. They may not have to consult with or get permission from Jared, but courtesy heads up is just polite.
Do people stop you on the streets daily to talk about your project? Is it the core of your professional identity to complete strangers?
They are not really brothers. And even in real families people want their own space and independence!

And there have been plenty of lawsuits over the years where people didn’t and then found out that maybe they should have talked to that person who they didn’t think had any right to know what they were doing. Just sayin…

I didn’t think he sounded bitter at all. Just telling it like it is in the real world. Professional relationships end and individuals move off in different directions with their immediate families usually their priority.
I have been a fan of the show for so many years now that it seems difficult to recall a time when spn was not a part of my life. I adore Sam and Dean and I have come to respect Jared and Jensen immensely as actors and professionals. For over 15 years, these two built a narrative about them being extremely close even off screen. Hence watching this whole drama unfold came as a nasty surprise. I truly believe that Jared could’ve picked up the phone instead of venting on social media. But I am terribly disappointed at Jensen- he should’ve kept Jared in the loop. Not professionally obligated to definitely but merely out of courtesy. The two of them made the show and the show in turn made them. I get Jared’s frustration. He is not asking for a share in the pie, just a little heads up. I believe Jensen could have done that much for the person he has been claiming is as dear to him as a brother. If it was any other professional commitment, Jensen is fully entitled to his privacy but the fact that it is about the Winchesters and he even took Kripke into confidence, must have been hurtful for Jared.

On one hand, I can see keeping the news close to the vest. Ackles likely wanted it as a 100% Chaos Machine Production.
I can see why Padalecki might be upset. It’s a potential cash cow. Likely, he would have wanted in on it.
I don’t even think it was a money thing. I think he would have just liked to have been informed that the universe he built over the past 15 years with his best friend and coworker was being expanded upon from that friend directly, instead of hearing it along with the rest of the world… on Twitter nonetheless.
this is exactly it. he didn’t need to be involved, he didn’t need a cut of it or whatever, I’m sure he would have been fine with Jensen’s production company doing this, it’s the fact that he wasn’t let in on the idea that the universe they created together for fifteen years, essentially as brothers on and off screen, was being expanded. Jensen couldn’t, I don’t know, send him a text before it was announced publicly? it feels cold and disrespectful. I’ve actually always been a much bigger fan of Jensen’s, and I feel absolutely horrible for Jared right now. Twitter was not the way he should’ve found out about this.
And also more than just Jensen was part of it but also someone else from the show (Rob) and Jared still wasn’t informed.
It may not be the major issue Jared has, but money is likely part of it. Highly likely… it rarely isn’t.
Regardless, social media is not the place to resolve it.

There was no convention. This is the state of the United States today. When reality does not line up with how people want it to, they just lie.

Don’t be naive. That was a rant, and he’s in the wrong. First him and his followers accept it, better his chances at salvaging any of that “friendship”.
That video you are referring to, Jensen talks about Chaos Machine working on several projects, including one with a SPN alum — no mention of who. There was never a comment that said that any of the projects were related to Supernatural in any way. Jared jokes that the people also want to know if Jared will be involved and Jared jokes absolutely!
Jared knew that Chaos Machine was working on projects (and had no problem with that) but he did not know that one of the projects was related to SPN.
Never expected that kind of thing happens between these two. Hugely disappointed in Jensen.

I think they’re making the same mistake as the other failed spinoffs. The majority of the fans loved the show because of the love between the brother (and the actors…). Without it it’s really a new show, and not for me.

It felt like an awkward family dinner that I couldn’t look away from! But it’s kinda sad too. Wish Jared didn’t respond so publicly like that; texting or DMing exists.
I dunno, it does sound like Jared Padalecki humor to me. He probably thought he crossed a line (either rethinking the wording of his joke, or the realization that it made the joke TOO obvious) when he aimed the third tweet at Robbie.
That said, if it’s a joke, I’d rather he clear the air so that the fandom doesn’t keep making a big deal out of nothing, as it oft does. (based on my experience, as a member of said fandom)
I’m thinking/hoping that Jensen was just busy with The Boys and kripke produces it so it makes sense he’d run it by him and then you tie in the negotiations with the network etc. Probably just didn’t get around to it by the time the news broke.
Either that or they conned everyone into thinking they were BFFs basically. Hard to see that with 15 years in a shoe together. If they didn’t like each other I woild think they would have called it quits years ago when their stock was even higher.
If this isn’t a joke those Supernatural conventions are going to be super awkward when they start back up.

“Soldier Boy” is a lot more than a cameo gig for The Boys. This is not a rant — it is two (concise) comments. A rant would have been if he continued beyond the third comment which he deleted within minutes of posting it initially. You are minimizing one thing to a cameo when it is not and magnifying another into a rant when it it is not.
Both men are grown and professionals. Jared could have not commented on Twitter. Jensen could have given Jared a heads up that the project was happening.
Agree. But speaking mainly from the proposed show’s premise, why should the older Winchester have the monopoly of telling the story? T’would be more interesting for the 2 boys to alternate or be together in doing the narrative. If it’s just a voiceover, both Jared & Jensen can make time for it even as they work on their separate new shows
I have no idea what happened but even if Jared’s response is a joke, this still feels awkward as all get out. Not exactly how you want such an announcement to roll out.
Originally, ‘Walker’ was to be a project where Jared produced and Ackles was to star in the show. But, Jared changed his mind about retiring from acting and decided to take the lead. Jensen was to direct at that point.
I think this is a misunderstanding between them. But, seriously how could the character of Sam be part of Supernatural that is about their parents?
Walker was a project that Anna Fricke developed with Jared in mind. Jensen was never going to star in the show. Jared wanted Jensen to direct or guest star or participate in any way he could.
Jensens new project takes place before Dean was born. And believe it or not they were Sams parents too.
Unveiling this project 3 minutes before last weeks episode of Walker was pretty poor timing on top of not telling your costar of 15 years that it had been in development for over a year….Surprise!!
They did a virtual conference call and Jensen did mention the possibility of other Supernatural projects and that he wouldn’t be away from Supernatural for long.
If you are referring to the Creation Ent virtual convention video, then Jensen did not say that Chaos Machine was working on a Supernatural related project. He said that they were working on about five projects across different genres and one of the projects was with a Supernatural alum. That is it.
It’s important to remember they are/were (believe still ARE) close work friends now close friends. Jensen did not HAVE to tell Jared because the spin off will need nothing from him nor his portrayal of Sam. Jensen AND Daneel BOTH consider Misha a best friend of theirs. There have been slight not intentionally hurtful distinctions made across time in interviews. In my opinion, I think it’d be even cooler if the OG angels pop up in the background once in a blue moon showing them directing John and Mary’s lives in their age old hope for Sam & Deantobe born and bring on Armageddon. To be clear, they need not even SPEAK. lol I’d just like see an angel sometimes lurking in the background lookin’ sus.🤪
