Best known for playing Detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson on ABC’s Starsky & Hutch from 1975 to 1979, Soul died “after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family,” according to his wife Helen Snell. Prior to Starsky & Hutch, Soul portrayed Joshua Bolt on ABC’s Here Come the Brides from 1968 to 1970. He was 80 years old.
The Saved by the Bell: The New Class actor was killed in a plane crash, along with his two young daughters, on Jan. 4. His recent TV credits included roles on Timeless, Sense8 and Hunters. He was 51.
The star of Fox’s The Cleaning Lady died on Jan. 8 following a private battle with appendiceal cancer, according to a statement from his rep. His previous TV credits included shows like Designated Survivor and The Following. He was 42.
Crombie, best known to TV fans for playing deranged stalker “Crazy” Joe Davola on Seinfeld, died in January at age 71, following a brief illness. In addition to his work on Seinfeld — where his character was an intense writer who became enraged when he learned Kramer was having a party and didn’t invite him — Crombie’s TV credits included episodes of Law & Order, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue and Walker, Texas Ranger.
The last surviving member of The Honeymooners cast passed away of natural causes on Jan. 13 at the age of 99. Randolph played Trixie Norton opposite Art Carney, Jackie Gleason and Audrey Meadows on the iconic CBS sitcom.
The All My Children actor died on Jan. 12; his cause of death was later reported to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Musser made his debut on the ABC soap in 2005 after winning the reality TV contest I Wanna Be a Soap Star. He later appeared in Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups and found success in recent years as a fitness model.
Hayes, a celebrated daytime TV icon who portrayed Doug Williams on Days of Our Lives for more than five decades, died in January at the age of 98. Hayes was twice nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for his work on Days, first in 1975 and again in 1976. He and wife Susan Seaforth-Hayes, who also played his on-screen wife, received Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 45th annual ceremony in 2018.
The Port Charles actor died on Jan. 21 at the age of 58; his cause of death was later confirmed to be “anoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, a brain injury resulting from lack of blood, following resuscitation from cardio pulmonary arrest due to drug intoxication from substances including amphetamines, cocaine, ethanol and fentanyl.”
In addition to succeeding Michael Dietz as Dr. Joe Scanlon on the ABC soap in 1999, Gail had prominent roles in Beverly Hills, 90210, Savannah and Robin’s Hoods. His other TV credits included Doogie Howser, M.D., The Round Table, Murder, She Wrote and Matlock.
Graham, an actor best known for appearing in multiple Star Trek projects, passed away in January at age 73. Throughout his career, Graham appeared as Tanis on Star Trek: Voyager, Soval on Star Trek: Enterprise and Ragnar on Star Trek: Renegades. He was also known for his starring role on Fox’s Alien Nation. Other TV credits included shows like Ally McBeal, Diagnosis Murder, JAG, Nip/Tuck and many more.
Veteran broadcaster Osgood, best known for his two decade-plus run as anchor of CBS Sunday Morning, died of dementia in January at age 91. An accomplished writer and author whose career at CBS News spanned 45 years, Osgood began anchoring CBS Sunday Morning in 1994. He retired in 2016 at age 84.
Davies, who portrayed the teenage version of her real-life mother Erika Slezak‘s character, Victoria “Viki” Lord, on ABC’s One Life to Live, died in January at age 42; no cause of death was given at the time. OLTL aired on ABC from 1968 until its cancellation in 2012, but was briefly revived as a web series in 2013. Davies played “Teenage Viki” in a series of flashbacks in 2003.
Best known for playing Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies, and for his Emmy Award-nominated role on The Mandalorian, Weathers died on Jan. 30, according to a statement from his family. The professional football player-turned-actor was 76.
Windsor, a professional dancer best known to TV audiences for his four-season stint on the UK’s Strictly Come Dancing, died in February at the age of 44. A cause of death has yet to be disclosed. Windsor made his Strictly Come Dancing debut in 2010 and was paired with Eighth Wonder frontwoman Patsy Kensit (eliminated in Week 9). He returned for three additional seasons and was paired with EastEnders vet Anita Dobson (also eliminated in Week 9), Emmerdale star Lisa Riley (eliminated in Week 11) and Dragon’s Den investor Deborah Meaden (eliminated in Week 5).
The Welsh actor, who played Keith Bishop in Ricky Gervais’ original BBC comedy The Office, died at the age of 50 in February. In addition to his 14 episodes on the workplace mockumentary, MacIntosh appeared in Little Britain, The Unusual Suspects, Galavant, Drunk History UK, Mongrels, Miranda and Mile High. He also appeared in an episode of Gervais’ black dramedy After Life.
Savident, best known to fans of the UK soap Coronation Street as Fred the butcher, died on Feb. 21 at the age of 86. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
“Everyone at Coronation Street is deeply saddened to learn of John Savident’s death,” Iain MacLeod, ITV Executive Producer for Continuing Drama, said in a statement. “As Fred Elliott, John firmly established himself in the pantheon of Coronation Street greats. His peerless comic timing, combined with a deep pathos arising from his outstanding dramatic skill, made Fred an unforgettable, iconic character that provided great joy to viewers for many years.”
Mitchell, best known for his roles in Star Trek: Discovery and Jericho, died on Feb. 24 at 49, after battling ALS for more than five years. His other TV credits included Ghost Whisperer, Switched at Birth, The Astronaut Wives Club and more. On the film side, he appeared in Miracle, Captain Marvel and Blood Honey, among others.
Gauthier, an English-born Canadian actor whose wide variety of TV credits included Once Upon a Time (as Smee) and Eureka, died on Feb. 23, at age 48, following a short illness. Gauthier’s TV work also included roles on Supernatural, Harper’s Island, Sanctuary, Smallville, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Legends of Tomorrow, The CW’s Charmed reboot and, most recently, Joe Pickett.
Longtime stand-up comedian Lewis, who had a memorable co-starring role alongside Larry David on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, died in February at the age of 76 after suffering a heart attack.
After rising to fame as a stand-up comic in the 1980s, Lewis starred opposite Jamie Lee Curtis in the ABC sitcom Anything But Love, and logged a number of guest appearances on TV, including a stint on 7th Heaven as Rabbi Richard Glass. His most notable TV role, though, was likely Curb Your Enthusiasm, where he played a heightened version of himself as Larry David’s friend-slash-nemesis in more than 40 episodes.
ESPN’s longtime NFL reporter died on March 3 at 72. No cause of death was disclosed. In 2016, Mortensen announced that he would be stepping away from TV amid a battle with Stage IV throat cancer. He eventually returned to ESPN, but exited in September 2023. He first appeared on the network in 1991 and frequently reported on Sunday NFL Countdown, Monday NFL Countdown and SportsCenter.
Garinger, whose journey to fatherhood was documented in a Season 6 episode of MTV’s 16 and Pregnant, died in a tragic ATV accident in February. He was just 20 years old. Garinger’s episode of 16 and Pregnant, which aired on March 16, 2021, chronicled the arrival of his and Selena Gutierrez’s daughter Dareli. They later welcomed a second daughter named Esmi.
Griffin, a fishing boat captain who was featured on National Geographic’s Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks, died in a boating accident in March. Griffin and his vessel Reels of Fortune appeared on Seasons 4 and 5 of Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks (fka Wicked Tuna: North vs. South), which aired in 2017 and 2018. All episodes are currently streaming on Disney+.
Garrison, who appeared on the TLC reality series Sister Wives along with his parents Kody and Janelle Brown, died by suicide in March at the age of 25. Garrison was one of six children shared by Kody and Janelle and was a pre-teen when Sister Wives debuted on TLC in 2010. Sister Wives chronicles the lives of polygamist Kody and his four wives — Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn — and their 18 children. Kody and Janelle separated in December 2022.
Lawrence, the Grammy- and Emmy Award-winning entertainer whose career spanned seven decades, died in March of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 88. On television, Lawrence was a fixture on Steve Allen’s Tonight Show. He later went on to headline two short-lived variety programs — NBC’s The Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé Show (1958) and CBS’ The Steve Lawrence Show (1965) — and made reoccurring appearances on CBS’ The Carol Burnett Show. He also served as a panelist on the long-running game show What’s My Line?; additional TV credits included Murder, She Wrote, The Nanny, Hot in Cleveland, Two and a Half Men and CSI.
Actress Bernard, best known for her ’80s stint as aspiring singer Terry Brock on ABC’s General Hospital, died in March at the age of 64. Bernard joined GH in 1984 as Terry, the daughter of David Groh’s villainous D.L. Brock, and remained on the venerable soap for six years before exiting in 1990. Prior to landing General Hospital, she guest-starred on a number of primetime series, including Simon & Simon and The Facts of Life.
The actor best known for Land of the Lost and Planet of the Apes died Thursday, March 21 from natural causes at age 91. Harper also appeared in installments of Tales of Wells Fargo, Thriller, Wagon Train and The Tall Man, in addition to 87th Precinct, a police drama co-starring Robert Lansing and Norman Fell. From 1990-91, he played Peter Whitmore in the NBC soap opera Generations for 62 episodes.
Gossett Jr., who with his iconic role in An Officer and a Gentleman became the first Black actor to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, died in March at the age of 87. Gossett Jr.’s other accolades included an Emmy (for his role as Fiddler in 1977’s well-watched Roots miniseries) and a pair of Golden Globes (for his aforementioned role as Officer and a Gentleman‘s Sgt. Foley and the 1991 TV-movie The Josephine Baker Story).
In more recent years on TV, he played the Jaffa politician Gerak on Stargate SG-1, voiced a drill sergeant in a 2006 episode of Family Guy and Lucius Fox in The Batman animated series, and did episodes of Touched by an Angel, Psych, Madam Secretary, CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 reboot (as Lou’s father), HBO’s Watchmen (for which he earned his eighth career Emmy nomination) and BET+’s Kingdom Business.
Perdomo tragically died in March at the age of 27 as a result of a motorcycle accident. The actor starred as Andre Anderson in Gen V, Prime Video’s ongoing spinoff of The Boys. His other TV credits included Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (where he played the warlock Ambrose Spellman opposite Kiernan Shipka) and episodes of Midsomer Murders and Hetty Feather.
Rush, the actress best known for her roles on Peyton Place and All My Children, died in March at the age of 97. Rush was a regular on the fifth and final season of ABC’s primetime soap Peyton Place, which ended its run in June 1969. From 1992-94, she played Nola Orsini on All My Children, starring in a total of 35 episodes. Additional TV credits included 7th Heaven, The Love Boat, Murder, She Wrote and Maude, among others.
Flaherty, best known to TV audiences for his work on the Canadian sketch comedy series SCTV and the NBC cult classic Freaks and Geeks, died in April at age 82. In addition to SCTV (where he popularized such characters as Big Jim McBob, Count Floyd and Guy Caballero) and Freaks and Geeks (where he played eccentric family patriarch Harold Weir), Flaherty’s TV work included episodes of Dream On, Ellen, Frasier, Married… With Children and The King of Queens.
The 1923 actor was found dead in April after facing allegations of domestic violence; he was just 27 years old. Brings Plenty was a suspect in a domestic violence incident in Lawrence, Kansas and was being sought by authorities when his body was discovered. The nephew of Yellowstone actor Mo Brings Plenty, he played Pete Plenty Clouds on 1923, with additional TV credits including Tall Tales of Jim Bridger and Into the Wild Frontier.
The actor who played cunning villain Aethelhelm on The Last Kingdom passed away in April at the age of 60. He became one of the primary villains on Netflix’s historical epic as Aethelhelm, who schemed to install his grandson on the throne of England. His other TV credits included Victoria, Doctor Who, Death in Paradise and Raised by Wolves.
Mandisa, a singer who rose to prominence on the fifth season of American Idol and went on to become a Grammy-winning Christian artist, died in April from complications of class III obesity. She was 47. In a statement regarding Mandisa’s death, American Idol called her “an adored icon” in the music industry whose passing “has left everyone on the show heartbroken.”
Mandisa’s album Overcomer took home the trophy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards. She had already been nominated for four additional Grammys.
Milligan, who starred in the first two seasons of 1970s kids show Land of the Lost, passed away in April at the age of 86. Land of the Lost followed Milligan as dad Rick Marshall, who was transported back to prehistoric times along with his son Will and daughter Holly; Milligan, however, left the series after two seasons after demanding that he and the cast be compensated for the show’s various merchandising endeavors, and he was replaced by Ron Harper in the third and final season. Milligan’s other TV credits included episodes of Gunsmoke, Alice, Quincy M.E. and The Bionic Woman, along with a 1987 arc on the daytime soap General Hospital.
Sparks, the Golf Channel personality who hosted The Big Break, died in April at the age of 50. No cause of death was revealed. Between 2005 and 2006, Sparks hosted three seasons of The Big Break, which aimed to award an aspiring golfer access into big professional events, or offer full-season exemptions to lower-level tours. The series premiered in October 2003 and ran through 2015. Sparks also hosted Golf With Style and Playing Lessons With the Pros, and appeared in the 2004 film Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius as three-time U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Alexa Stirling.
Bennett, a Daytime Emmy Award-winning soap actress and writer whose credits included Santa Barbara and The Young and the Restless, passed away of cancer in April. She was 75. On NBC’s Santa Barbara, Bennett played Megan Richardson, an author tasked with writing a biography about family patriarch C.C. Capwell. She went on to portray Julia Newman, the wife of Eric Braeden’s Victor Newman, between 1980 and 2000 on The Young and the Restless, and appeared on episodes of General Hospital, The Paper Chase and Search for Tomorrow.
Carter, best known for his portrayal of Sgt. Joe Broadhurst on NBC’s McCloud from 1970 to 1977, died in April at the age of 95. The actor’s big break on the small screen came in 1955 when he was cast as Private Sugarman on The Phil Silvers Show, making him one of the first Black actors to land a series-regular sitcom role. Carter appeared in more than 90 episodes of the show, which aired on CBS until 1959. Following his seven seasons on McCloud, Carter then played Colonel Tigh on ABC’s Battlestar Galactica, which ran for one season from 1978 to 1979.
Emmy-winning actress Adams, who played Dina on The Young and the Restless for more than three decades, died in April at the age of 85. On Y&R, she originated the role of Dina Abbott Mergeron, a cosmetics mogul whose arrival in Genoa City upended the lives of her ex-husband John Abbott and their children. Adams was a series regular from 1983 to 1986 and returned to the series every few years throughout the ’90s and 2000s, appearing in more than 200 episodes in total. Her other TV credits included The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives, The Love Boat, Happy Days, Matlock and Walker, Texas Ranger.
Survivor Season 1 contestant Christopher, who held the distinction of being the first person ever voted off the CBS reality hit, died in April. She was 87. Christopher was one of the original 16 castaways sent to live on the island of Borneo in Survivor‘s freshman season, which aired on CBS in the summer of 2000. She was a charming addition to the cast with her memorable ukulele playing, but she was one of her tribe’s oldest members and she hurt herself during the immunity challenge, allowing the other team to win. With her tribemates viewing her as the weak link, Christopher saw her torch snuffed at the end of the series premiere, making her the first to hear those fateful words from host Jeff Probst: “The tribe has spoken.”
Gelder, who played Tywin Lannister’s brother Kevan on HBO’s Game of Thrones, passed away in May of complications from bile duct cancer; he was 74 years old. Gelder debuted in Thrones’ first season as Kevan Lannister, appearing in 12 episodes across six seasons, with Kevan often acting as a levelheaded counterweight to the Lannisters’ more power-hungry instincts. Gelder also had roles on Torchwood, Doctor Who and His Dark Materials.
Rubin, the longtime entertainment anchor for KTLA Morning News, died in May at the age of 64. He reportedly passed away as the result of a heart attack he suffered May 10 after appearing on his regular Hollywood news segment that morning. Rubin joined KTLA, Los Angeles’ No. 1 news program, in 1991 and had won multiple Emmys throughout his career. Additionally, Rubin earned a Golden Mike Award for best entertainment reporter, a lifetime achievement award from the Southern California Broadcasters Association, and he has been honored by the Los Angeles Press Club.
Veteran actor Coleman, whose decades-long career in Hollywood included memorable roles in 9 to 5 and Tootsie and an Emmy award, died in May at the age of 92. His impressive career on the small screen included a notable turn on Norman Lear’s Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, followed by an acclaimed two-season run as a self-centered talk show host on NBC’s Buffalo Bill that earned him an Emmy nomination. He won an Emmy in 1987 for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for the TV movie Sworn to Silence. Coleman’s most recent TV role was a guest spot as John Dutton Sr., the father of Kevin Costner’s character, on a 2019 episode of Yellowstone.
Stewart, a longtime political reporter and CNN commentator, died suddenly in May at the age of 58. A cause of death has not yet been confirmed. Stewart was hired at CNN ahead of the 2016 presidential election and had since frequently appeared on-air to comment on the political news of the day. Before her death, she had most recently appeared on an episode of The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer. She also co-hosted Hot Mics From Left to Right, a podcast discussing the intersection of politics and culture, with fellow CNN commentator Maria Cardona.
Filmmaker Spurlock, best known for the 2004 documentary Super Size Me, died in May following a private battle with cancer. He was 53 years old. Spurlock directed and starred in Super Size Me, which followed him over a 30-day period in which he only consumed McDonald’s food and charted the drastic changes in his physical and psychological health. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. On TV, Spurlock was the star and executive producer of FX’s 30 Days (2005-08), where Spurlock, or another person or group of people, spent 30 days immersed in an unfamiliar lifestyle in each episode. Five years after its cancellation, he resurfaced on CNN with the docuseries Morgan Spurlock: Inside Man (2013-16), in which he investigated topics of national interest using participatory journalism.
The actor died on Saturday, May 25 after he was shot in Los Angeles at the age of 37. He was best known for playing Brando Corbin on ABC’s General Hospital. Wactor’s other TV credits included Agent X, Vantastic, Hollywood Girl, Training Day, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Station 19 and more.
Actor Anderson, whose notable TV roles included the father of Keri Russell’s title character on Felicity, died in June following a battle with cancer. He was 67. In addition to Felicity — where he appeared in nine episodes as Felicity’s often-disapproving dad, Dr. Edward Porter — Anderson held recurring roles on Melrose Place, thirtysomething, The Outer Limits, NYPD Blue and, more recently, Bosch. On the big screen, his credits included 1984’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and 2002’s Unfaithful.
The former Doctor Who companion died at the age of 99 in early June. He starred in 77 episodes of the sci-fi series’ original run, and also reprised the character for various podcasts and offshoots including Doctor Who: Short Trips, Doctor Who: The Lost Stories and more. His other credits include Coronation Street, the 1963 film The Great Escape and Superman (1978).
Mosley, a popular TV doctor in the U.K., died in June at the age of 67. At the time, Mosley had been on vacation with his wife when he went out for a walk on the Greek island of Symi; when he didn’t return, he was reported missing and a search of the area began, and his body was later found by authorities.
Mosley was known for producing docuseries including Channel 4’s Michael Mosley: Who Made Britain Fat and BBC‘s Trust Me, I’m a Doctor. He appeared on BBC One’s The One Show and ITV’s This Morning, and hosted other health-centered docuseries including BBC Two’s E-Cigarettes: Miracle or Menace? and BBC Four’s Inside Porton Down: Britain’s Secret Weapons Research Facility. In 2002, he was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Non-Fiction Special (Informational) for The Human Face, a four-part BBC miniseries exploring the science behind beauty, facial expression and fame.
Seven, the canine actor who portrayed Dog on AMC’s The Walking Dead, passed away in June. A Belgian Malinois, Seven joined the series in its ninth season; a tribute post on The Walking Dead‘s Instagram account remembered him as the show’s “best boy.”
Mavar Jr., a former cast member on Discovery Channel‘s Deadliest Catch, died in June after experiencing a medical emergency in Alaska. He was 59. Mavar appeared in nearly 100 episodes of the reality series — which chronicles the daily goings-on of multiple fishing vessels, including their personal rivalries — between 2005 and 2021. Mavar worked aboard the Northwestern under Captain Sig Hansen, but he parted ways with the show in 2021 when a case of appendicitis escalated to a more serious situation.
Veteran actor Sutherland, whose long career included one Primetime Emmy and two Golden Globe wins, died in June after a long illness. He was 88. Though he was best known for his prolific film career — with credits including Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Backdraft, Six Degrees of Separation and the Hunger Games movies, to name just a few — Sutherland was a familiar face to TV viewers, as well. Memorable roles included Commander in Chief‘s Speaker of the House Nathan Templeton, Dirty Sexy Money‘s family patriarch Tripp Darling and oil tycoon J. Paul Getty in the FX miniseries Trust.
Best known for his portrayal of Kamekona Tupuola on CBS’ Hawaii Five-0, Taylor Wily died on June 20 at the age of 56. Executive producer Peter Lenkov recalled falling in love with the actor in his first audition, which earned him a role he would play for the next 10 years. “You came in with a towel on your head mopping up sweat, and I was smitten,” Lenkov said. “You charmed me into making you a regular… on the show… and in my life.”
Hadley, a tattoo artist best known for competing on Season 6 of Ink Master, lost his battle with testicular cancer in June, at the age of 46. Hadley appeared on the sixth season of the tattoo-based reality competition series, which aired at the time on Spike. He was eliminated second that season, finishing in 17th place out of 18 contestants. Though his time on Ink Master ended quickly, Hadley continued to work as a tattoo artist until his passing.
Becker, who starred in Season 5 of MTV’s The Real World, died by suicide in June at the age of 52. Becker was 25 years old when she appeared on The Real World: Miami in 1996, alongside housemates Dan Renzi, Melissa Padrón, Joe Patane, Cynthia Roberts, Flora Alekseyeun and Mike Lambert. During her time on the show, Becker brought home a puppy named Leroy and memorably feuded with Padrón, who voluntarily moved out of the house after their argument.
Crazy Town frontman Seth Binzer, who went by the stage name Shifty Shellshock, died of an as-yet-undetermined cause in June. He was 49. Outside of his career in music, Shellshock appeared on two seasons of VH1’s Celebrity Rehab, including the debut season in 2008. He graduated with his fellow cast members, but quickly relapsed and returned for Celebrity Rehab Season 2. Shellshock later popped up on two seasons of the follow-up series Sober House.
Professional race car driver Musi, who rose to fame as a cast member on Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings, died in June following a year-long battle with Stage 4 breast cancer. She was just 33 years old.
“Surrounded by her family, in the comfort of her own home, Lizzy was called to heaven at 11:25 pm tonight,” Musi’s father, Pat, shared on Facebook on June 27. “Thank you for all the prayers and support throughout her battle.”
The veteran comedy actor passed away in June at the age of 80. In a career that spanned half a century, Mull tallied a number of memorable roles on the small screen, including gay boss Leon on Roseanne, Principal Willard Kraft on Sabrina the Teenage Witch and private eye Gene Parmesan on Arrested Development. He also had an impressive film career, with key roles in Clue and Mr. Mom.
Jabbar, a cast member from the OWN reality show Love & Marriage: Huntsville, died in early July at the age of 42. The news was confirmed by YouTuber Marcella Speaks who read a message from Jabbar’s family stating that the reality star died “peacefully at home surrounded in love.”
Hollyoak was a contestant on The Great British Baking Show in 2022, before being eliminated in Episode 6 during Halloween Week. Hollyoak’s death was announced in an Instagram statement saying she “passed away peacefully surrounded by her family” in July at the age of 61. A cause of death is not known.
Sheehan, best known for his work on soap operas General Hospital and Knots Landing, died in late June at the age of 75. A cause of death was not disclosed. In addition to GH (where he played lawyer Joe Kelly) and Knots Landing (where he played journalist Ben Gibson from Seasons 5-8), Sheehan also memorably headlined the NBC sitcom Day by Day and took over the role of Cher Horowitz’s father, Mel, on ABC/UPN’s series adaptation of Clueless. Other TV credits included episodes of Cheers, the original MacGyver, Columbo, Diagnosis Murder, What I Like About You and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Colbert, best known for playing restaurant host Dora Mae on the long-running primetime soap Dallas, died in June at the age of 77. She appeared in episodes of Benson and The Fall Guy before joining the cast of Dallas in Season 6 as Dora Mae, the host of the Oil Baron’s Club, a popular local restaurant and frequent hangout for the Ewing family. She went on to appear in more than 65 episodes, up to and including the 14th and final season.
The actor, who starred as young Brian Tanner in ALF, was found dead in his car on June 13; the news was first reported on July 10. His other TV appearances included Fantastic Max, Murphy Brown, Fantasy Island, The A-Team, T.J. Hooker and The Twilight Zone. He was 46.
Duvall passed away in July as a result of complications from diabetes. She was 75. Although she was best known for her film work — namely Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 take on The Shining, where she played Wendy Torrance opposite Jack Nicholson — Duvall also had a number of TV credits, including The Twilight Zone, L.A. Law, The Hughleys and Wishbone. She also worked behind and in front of the camera to produce a variety of children’s programming, earning Primetime Emmy nominations for the children’s series Tall Tales & Legends and Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories.
The taboo-shattering sex therapist who built a career in TV and radio as “Dr. Ruth” died in July at her home in New York City at the age of 96. Westheimer was 52 when she began her media career in 1980 as the host of a late-night radio call-in show that became a top-rated hit in New York City. She went on to host a daytime talk show for seven years along with several cable shows, using her platform to advocate for speaking openly about sexual issues.
The legendary fitness guru passed away at age 76 in July; no cause of death was disclosed. Simmons rose to fame in the 1970s after opening a series of gyms in L.A., going on to host a number of TV shows along with several long-running infomercials for fitness products like the Sweatin’ to the Oldies workout tapes and the Deal-A-Meal diet plan. He was also a frequent guest on Late Night With David Letterman and Letterman’s Late Show, as well as Howard Stern’s radio program.
Doherty died July 13 after a long battle with breast cancer. The actress — most famous for her four-season run as Brenda Walsh on the original Beverly Hills, 90210 and her three-season stint as Prue Halliwell on the original Charmed — started her career at 11 years old, appearing one after the other on Michael Landon’s Father Murphy and Little House On the Prairie. She parlayed that early success into a lead on NBC’s Our House, a 1986-88 family drama starring Wilford Brimley and Deidre Hall. Then came what was arguably her breakout role, that of “megabitch” Heather Duke — aka the last mean girl standing — in the big-screen black comedy Heathers. She booked 90210 two years later and, overnight, found herself the object of fan adulation and tabloid obsession.
Best known for playing Hill Street Blues’ SWAT leader Lt. Howard Hunter and the father of Doogie Howser M.D., Sikking died on July 13, of complications from dementia. He was 90.
The acclaimed chef who competed on Top Chef Masters and served as a guest judge on Top Chef died in July after drowning while inner-tubing on Portland’s Willamette River; she was 49 years old. Pomeroy rose to culinary fame as the chef of the Portland restaurant Beast, earning a prestigious James Beard Award among other honors. She later competed on Top Chef Masters (finishing fourth) and Iron Chef America and pulled guest-judge duties on Top Chef in three different seasons.
Comedian, actor and TV icon Newhart passed away in July at the age of 94, following a series of short illnesses. After first gaining fame as a deadpan stand-up comedian, Newhart starred as psychologist Bob Hartley on CBS’ The Bob Newhart Show, which ran for six seasons from 1972 to 1978. In 1982, he returned to CBS to star in the sitcom Newhart, which wrapped an eight-season run in 1990 and concluded with one of television’s most memorable series finales ever.
Newhart later took on a dramatic role on NBC’s ER as depressed patient Ben Hollander, earning an Emmy nomination in 2004. He also appeared in several Big Bang Theory episodes as Sheldon’s childhood idol Professor Proton, a role that won Newhart his first-ever Emmy Award in 2013. He later reprised the Professor Proton character on Big Bang prequel series Young Sheldon.
Conservative commentator and talk show host Dobbs died on July 18 at the age of 78. Dobbs was a part of CNN’s launch in 1980, serving as the new network’s vice president as well as the host of Moneyline (which would eventually be retitled Lou Dobbs Tonight). After resigning from CNN for what would be a second time in 2008, he brought Lou Dobbs Tonight to Fox Business in 2011; he was the network’s highest-rated host when, quite abruptly, his eponymous program was cancelled in February 2021.
TerBlanche, best known for her role as Gillian Andrassy on ABC’s All My Children, died in July at the age of 51. She joined the AMC cast in 1997, when Gillian was sent to live in Pine Valley after embarrassing her family with her romantic transgressions. Although TerBlanche’s character was killed off the soap opera in 2001, she briefly returned in a 2011 episode when Gillian’s ghost made an appearance. TerBlanche’s other acting credits included K-T.V., Three Thieves and a Wedding, The Syndicate and Spin City.
The 16 and Pregnant star died in July at the age of 27. Although Crittendon had some reported health issues, authorities were still investigating her cause of death. Her Season 5 episode of the MTV reality series aired in 2014.
The Survivor: Africa finalist died in July at the age of 79 after a long battle with cancer. She competed in the show’s third season where she made it all the way to the Final 2 seats, but lost by a 5-2 vote to Ethan Zohn.
Ash, best known to TV audiences for her starring role on Survivor’s Remorse, died in July after a long cancer battle. She was 46 years old. She began her TV career in sketch comedy. Following a two-season run on Logo’s The Big Gay Sketch Show, the comedian was cast in the 14th and final season of Fox’s MADtv, on which she impersonated such pop culture figures as Whoopi Goldberg and Naomi Campbell. Subsequent TV credits included episodes of A Black Lady Sketch Show, Bless the Harts, Family Reunion and Sacrifice.
The Bachelor alum died in July following a battle with leukemia; she was just 31 years old. Merkt competed in Season 21 of The Bachelor, which aired in 2017, with Nick Viall handing out the roses. Billed as a photographer from Vancouver, British Columbia, Merkt was sent home by Nick in the season’s second week.
Best known to TV fans as Nurse Alyssa Ogawa on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Yasutake passed away in August at the age of 70 following a long battle with cancer. Yasutake appeared as Nurse Ogawa in 16 episodes of TNG and reprised the role in the films Star Trek: Generations and Star Trek: First Contact. Recently, she played Ali Wong’s disapproving mother-in-law Fumi Nakai in the Netflix limited series BEEF. Her other TV credits included The Closer, ER and Grey’s Anatomy.
Lillis, a voice actress best known for playing Misty, Jessie, Jigglypuff and more beloved characters in the original Pokémon anime series, died Saturday, Aug. 10 after a battle with breast cancer. She was 55 years old.
An acclaimed film actress and four-time Emmy winner, Rowlands passed away in August at the age of 94. (She had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for five years, her family said.) Rowlands started out on Broadway before breaking out on the hit ABC primetime soap Peyton Place. She went on to win four Emmys for TV movies, including one for playing former First Lady Betty Ford in 1987’s The Betty Ford Story. She’s best known, though, for her film work with her husband, director John Cassavetes, earning two Oscar nominations for A Woman Under the Influence and Gloria. She also played the older version of Rachel McAdams’ Allie in The Notebook.
The longtime host of the first incarnation of Hollywood Squares, Marshall died in August of kidney failure at the age of 98. Marshall was the host of the popular game show — which featured celebrities like Paul Lynde answering trivia questions as “squares” in a giant tic-tac-toe board — when it debuted on NBC in 1966, remaining as host for 16 years and winning four Daytime Emmys. After Squares’ initial run ended in 1981, Marshall appeared on shows like CHiPs, Fantasy Island and The Love Boat and returned to the revived Hollywood Squares for a week in 2002 to serve as center square and host an episode.
Aprea, the actor known for his roles in Another World and Full House, passed away in August. No cause of death was reported. He played two characters on NBC’s Another World between 1989 and 1998: Lucas Castigliano and Alexander Nikos. The actor also notably played John Stamos’ on-screen father in Full House, reprising the role in 2017 for Netflix’s reboot Fuller House. On the big screen, Aprea appeared in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part II as young Salvatore Tessio.
Donahue died Aug. 18 following a long illness; he was 88 years old. He was a daytime TV fixture for nearly 30 years. His eponymous talk show — which was the first to include audience participation — premiered in 1967, and ran through 1996. Donahue was the recipient of 20 Emmy Awards, including 10 Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Talk Show Host and six Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Talk Series. He himself was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1993, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024.
A part of PBS’ iconic This Old House home improvement program for nearly 40 years, Cook died on Aug. 21 following an extended illness, at age 70. Cook first appeared on This Old House in 1982 (the show’s second season), and was promoted to cast member/garden and landscape contractor in 1988. In 2022, he stepped away from the program due to health issues.
The Tex Mex Motors star died Aug. 25 at the age of 45 from stomach cancer. “Don’t be sad for me,” he said in a YouTube video. “I accomplished my dream of buying my own store, finishing Season 2 [of the Netflix series] and marrying the love of my life.”
Eudy, a pro wrestling legend who wrestled under the ring name Sid Vicious and won several championships in the WWE and WCW, died in August at the age of 63 after a battle with cancer. Eudy first rose to fame in the NWA in the late 1980s, with Sid Vicious becoming a member of Ric Flair’s vaunted stable known as the Four Horsemen. He later moved to the WWE (then the WWF) and won the WWE Championship two separate times under the name Sycho Sid. His wrestling career was derailed, though, by a graphic leg injury suffered during a pay-per-view event in 2001.
Darren, whose long showbiz career included memorable roles on T.J. Hooker and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, died in September at the age of 88. Darren was a teen idol after starring in the surf movie Gidget and recording the hit single “Goodbye, Cruel World,” and he was a frequent guest star on shows like The Love Boat and Fantasy Island. He joined the cast of the William Shatner cop drama T.J. Hooker in Season 2 as Officer Jim Corrigan, remaining a series regular until the show ended in 1986. He later played holographic lounge singer Vic Fontaine on Deep Space Nine, becoming a fan favorite and appearing in a total of eight episodes, including the series finale.
The veteran actor, whose distinct voice made him a staple of film and television, died at the age of 93 in September. The actor was perhaps best known as the voice of Darth Vader throughout the Star Wars franchise. In addition to voicing the iconic villain in both the original trilogy and prequel films, Jones also lent his voice to the animated series Star Wars Rebels and the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Throughout his lengthy career, Jones won a Daytime Emmy, two Primetime Emmys and three Tonys. In 2011, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement trophy at the Academy Awards.
Cannot believe I will not get to see that handsome face on The Cleaning Lady anymore, he was my favorite. My prayers go out to his family.

It’s getting so that I’m dreading looking at the news as we are losing so many talents, that so many of us grew up with or recently discovered. Either way, it’s sad and condolences to the families, friends and their fans.

I never met Gena Rowlands yet shed a tear or two upon hearing of her death. She was an actor whose name alone drew me to watch whatever
in which she chose to appear. Somehow, no matter how diverse the role might be, she brought a humanity to the character that was magnetic.
She leaves behind a body of work that teaches and transcends. She is missed.
I just love Gena Rolands. I also took the opportunity to watch everything she was ever in many times I might add.. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen Gloria and would watch it again today if it was on. She was Great! She IS Great.
