Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is rounding out its teaching staff with the addition of Gina Yashere.
The star and co-creator of CBS’ recently ended Bob Hearts Abishola will recur as a Starfleet instructor in Paramount+’s forthcoming series, Variety reports.
Yashere joins Oscar winner Holly Hunter, who will star as the captain and chancellor of the titular Starfleet Academy, while Billions vet Paul Giamatti will recur in Season 1 as an as-yet-unnamed villain, “a man with an ominous past connected to one of our cadets.”
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will “follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets” — played by Bella Shepard (Wolf Pack), Kerrice Brooks (My Old Ass), George Hawkins (Tell Me Everything), Karim Diané (One Of Us Is Lying), Zoë Steiner (Significant Others) and newcomer Sandro Rosta — “as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy” and “pursue a common dream of hope and optimism,” according to the official logline. “Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”
The YA offshoot marks the fifth live-action Star Trek series (and seventh Trek series overall) to debut on Paramount+, following Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Short Treks, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Production on Season 1 begins later this summer.

KENI
UHH… KEMI
One of the funniest ppl I’ve ever seen perform. Absolute plus having Yashere on the show!!!
Any word on whether Mary Wiseman will be in this? They seemed to be setting Tilly up for this on Star Trek Discovery, but as far as I can tell, there has been no official word on whether she will be in the series.
Her timeline is 900 years in the future and I think this show is more aligned with the Star Trek timeline of all the other shows, so probably not possible (and sad, since she is amazing!)?
I presumed they either would do a time-travel thing to get her back in the past or else some timey-wimey stuff about the Academy somehow being “outside of time” or whatever (though I guess that would contradict canon). It’s just funny that they’ve played her up as being this great teacher and even had at least one episode showing her with her students. To not pay that off by putting her on the new show seems like a missed opportunity.
It was just confirmed at Comic Con that Mary Wiseman will “guest star” on the series, along with Oded Fehr who plays Admiral Vance. More interestingly, perhaps, Tig Notario will be an actual series regular as Jett Reno. Since they are all part of the Discovery canon, I guess they figured out a way to deal with the 900 year problem.
