Starz is giving The Rook the hook.
The sci-fi series starring Emma Greenwell and Olivia Munn will not return for Season 2 at the network, TVLine has learned.
Loosely based on the 2012 novel by Daniel O’Malley, The Rook followed Greenwell’s Myfanwy, an agent who works for a super-secret branch of the British government that handles matters of Extreme Variant Abilities. Myfanwy awoke in the series premiere without any knowledge of who she was (or what she could do), and spent much of the first season trying to figure out which of her contemporaries was plotting to kill her.
The Rook‘s eight-episode freshman run thus summer averaged 225,000 total viewers and a 0.04 demo rating, ranking sixth among Starz’s nine current dramas.

Some readers who’d enjoyed The Rook in its original form took issue with the TV adaptation’s change in tone; where the novel had a light, fantastical touch, the Starz series went for a more realistic, gritty take on the supernatural spy story.
Do you have thoughts on The Rook‘s cancellation? Make sure to let us know in the comments!
Awesome series, I can’t believe they’re canceling it.
I loved the show. I read the book because of the show. The show was much much better than the book.
I just watched The Rook and really enjoyed it. I think Starz should definitely make a second season!
How can the Rook be cancelled, its my favourite show, it was amazing and i told all my friends about it and we’re all waiting on season 2!!! NOooooooooo
I thought the show was fresh and new. It sort of started off slow but, I got into it by the 2nd episode and really enjoyed the series. I binged episodes 3 – 8. I wish STARZ would re-think cancelling The Rook which in my opinion is one the best syfy shows currently playing,
I enjoyed the books and would have liked a 3rd novel but I also enjoyed the STARZ series version even with the character changes and tweaks to plots. I have come to realize books and tv/movie adaptations rarely fully replicate and often deviate so I judge separately. I am disappointed there is no second season. I felt season one was excellent and my family was looking forward to season 2
I loved the show and I’m upset it’s been canceled. Another interesting show bites the dust. So disappointing!!
I would have tuned in for another season.
I never read the book but just binged the show and really enjoyed it. Maybe Amazon or Netflix can pick it up and continue the story.
Very bummed in tye cancelation. I enjoyed the books but the tv adaptation I enjoyed more. Its disappointing that a nonmain stream show got the ax. This was a new view outside the normal crap everywhere else. So bummed
Im tired of contracting with sites like hulu and stars then having them cancel the new shows without even giving the proper closure leaving us (their paying customers) hanging.my wife is watching another series now and i think when that too has been shut down by stars i will cancel stars. not continue to give them my money and not getting anything in return but canceled shows.
Well, I haven’t read the book so my opinion of the show is based solely on its merits as an engaging, entertaining sci-fi video production—which it is in spades. I just finished watching it for a second time and may go for a third, although my viewing will be tainted by the knowledge that it isn’t coming back. It has a strong female lead, adeptly played by Emma Greenwell, and a great supporting cast. The story line is captivating, as is Myfany’s complicated relationship with the other characters—especially “Gestalt”. I confess I was looking forward to seeing this very unusual romance develop in future seasons.—and of course seeing how the Members of the Chequy continued their various supernatural operations. Would some other service please pick up this show? Netflix? Hulu? Anybody?
Ugh that sucks!!! I love the rook and was hoping season two would come out soon! It’s such a unique show, I was immediately hooked and finished it in a long night/morning lol. Hopefully another network will pick it up 🤞🏾
I loved The Rook series , I watched it when it was first on TV, and I have since watched it again, which says a lot to watch it twice! Please DO renew it, there are so many directions you could take the plot, the casting was perfect, great production values, interesting plot. I haven’t read the book, so I am just taking the series on face value. Really enjoyed it.
I LOVED this show. so unique, should of been on Netflix or something better. would have loved to see where it went next.
Disappointing. I liked it. Books and movies/tv can differ
Pity.. relatively decent plot lines.. characterization. They keep far worse.. typical.
The series had me hooked. Great acting by all and I had to look it up to find out when it will come back on. Very very upset it will not be returning. Great job to all who worked on this series
what a shame! Inteligent, well thought and nicely produced. – staring one of the most beautiful women in the world in a clever role like this – the storry hooked me from the first minute and I was waiting for season 2 impatiently- and now you ruined my day! one of the very rare series that are clever and witty. – a lack of courage by the producers to really put it to the test!?
I´m disapointed a bit angry and unsatisfied! the world does not only run on brainlessness and viewing figures. this is a sad verdict. who ever turned the show down should be sent to the dungeons. this was a real chance to prevent people to die from boredom and set a real alternative to the bride range of banalaty. And I guess it could have been a big reward winning horse …. like the “handmaids tale” – maybe not that big – but I guess You get the drift. why not sell the storry and the contracts to a production firm wich is wicked enough to show some real spirit in making TV great again.
The Rook was different than the book but it still caught my attention, interest and had me actually looking forward to a season 2. But yet again the “Suit’s” at STARZ cancelled it without giving it a chance. Are they really so surprised when they seriously didn’t bother promoting the show? Give me a break! They wanted it to fail. They are putting all the money into Outlander. There were no Instagram or YouTube previews and had there been it would have hit a larger audience! Keep it up STARZ by dropping shows with potential and watch your subscribers disappear one by one!!!!
Gutted. I really enjoyed Season 1.
Says more about Stars. They suck, not the show.
Regarding The Rook…it’s a shame there’ll be no 2nd season! Yet, it ended well, for me, without any cliff hanging; though I would’ve liked to see the demise of Monica – hottest of them all.
Too bad this series didn’t make it:(. Could’ve been great, like Xmen.
I haven’t read the books but really liked the TV show. Liked all of the characters enjoying the concept of the gestalt even more. Their choreography in thought an movement well timed and rehearsed.
First seasons are difficult at best. Thought they did very well. Should keep it going.
Wow I’m surprised at the negative reviews, I really liked the show, didn’t know about the book but I did like the show. Starz like so many of the premium sites haven’t had anything new or interesting in a long time, they are certainly NOT worth the price! Also I hate getting involved in a show and then have it canceled, not worth the effort to watch anymore.
