Non-profit Organization Management

Championing underrepresented talent, at scale, through the 10,000 Black Interns and 10,000 Able Interns programmes

About us

The Foundation is dedicated to championing underrepresented talent at scale. What started as the 100 Black Interns initiative, founded in 2020 by Jonathan Sorrell, Michael Barrington-Hibbert, Dawid Konotey-Ahulu, and Wol Kolade; scaled rapidly through their ambition to create countless opportunities that have empowered talented individuals to launch their careers, overcome barriers, and achieve their full potential. By promoting equity of opportunity and working with over 700 leading organisations across the full spectrum of UK industry, the 10,000 Interns Foundation’s programmes have created 5,000 paid internships for Black students and graduates and disabled students and graduates in just 3 years. The Foundation is combining access to industry with training and mentoring opportunities for the 25,000 students and graduates who have so far come through our programmes to build a diverse community of talent who will change the face of British business.

  • An incredible night celebrating the release of Rebecca Achieng Ajulu-Bushell’s highly-anticipated book, These Heavy Black Bones! Rebecca’s journey is truly extraordinary. As an ex-athlete, she made history as the first Black woman to swim for GB, was honoured by both Forbes and TIME and of course, serves as our dedicated CEO at The 10,000 Interns Foundation as a trailblazer for equity for opportunity and experience for Black talent. These Heavy Black Bones chronicles Rebecca’s iconic swimming career and the barriers she shattered along the way. Her book is not only a testament to her remarkable achievements but also a beacon of inspiration for anyone striving to make their mark. During the event, Rebecca shared her insights on breaking barriers and the power of resilience. She captivated the audience with a powerful book reading and an insightful Q&A session leaving everyone inspired to reflect on their own paths and ambitions. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, our alumni for joining us and our exceptional host, Tiyana. Lastly, congratulations to Rebecca on the launch of your incredible book - we’re all eagerly looking forward to reading it!

If you hire interns through our programme and you're not a Community Member... ask yourself, why not? We are a charity. Like so many other incredible initiatives on a mission to build a better world, we rely on funding to support what we do. We also happen to work with corporates... Over 1,000 organisations have been through our programme since 2020 Only 13% of those organisations have ever donated to support our mission. Our groundbreaking internship programmes are free to use at the point of use! As is all of our training, events, and alumni programming (for students AND organisations) Why? Because the issue of underrepresentation is a social change issue We believe in people. We believe they will make this change. And we believe this will take everyone! That means everyone needs to be able to engage From the smallest SMEs with no HR department hiring incredible Black talent and changing their organisations to the students that need our financial support to travel to their interviews, to the training for all those who weren't successful in securing an internship this year... To all our organisations welcoming interns this summer: this IS your Corporate Social Responsibility. DM me !! (and read about our amazing community members below) Community memberships is just £2,500 pa

I'm so sick of hearing the phrase 'Black excellence' What about [Black] joy, imagination, creativity, vision, courage, commitment... Because all of these things are excellent.. But they don't fit neatly within outdated standards that define success in a very narrow way. This past week we watched Lewis Hamilton and Bukayo Saka deliver exceptionally in their sports. This is undoubtedly excellence, they are at the top of their game and leading on a world stage But a while back, I noticed something that continues to frustrate me... The media always talk about Saka being a destined for greatness AND a 'straight A student'... Which is great. But doesn't make him more or less visionary, or committed to his chosen field, or worthy of respect, or capable of creating joy on and off the pitch Black sports people are not super heroes, they aren't perfect. And they need to exist beyond this narrow set of expectations 'Black excellence' is a demand that you be exceptional all the time, everywhere, at everything, all at once. And the stakes for making even a single mistake are so high. Blackness is not a monolith. We have so many ways of being, thinking, seeing and moving through the world And I for one, want to exist beyond the expectation that I be excellent in a way that I did not define. Black joy is excellent! And if you're watching the match tonight, win or lose, let the thrill of the game be the main reason. And let it be joyful !! P.S., Come on England !!

Remember these names: Saka, Palmer, Bellingham, Toney, Alexander-Arnold. Not just for their goals, but for their courage and for proactively rewriting the narrative. Three years ago, hate overshadowed Black footballers' talent. Isn't it ironic that a sport celebrating skill and teamwork can be so stained by bias?  Yet, this England team refused silence.  Their win is a stark reminder: to deny talent it’s due is a loss for all - regardless of skin colour. The football field mirrors our professional landscape. Unconscious bias can sideline exceptional Black colleagues, hindering both individual growth and company success. Let's cultivate environments for Black excellence to thrive in every corner of our workplaces, not just on scoreboards. Saka and his teammates remind us of the impact of superseding performative gestures. Let's take diversity and inclusion personally and champion such initiatives with genuine purpose. May their resilience be yet another reminder that change is everyone’s responsibility - those on the pitch and those in the stands. Even when the whistle blows and the game is over, the fight for equality has just begun.
