The effect of the X lawsuit on GARM has been devastating. For the climate community: we need to prevent something like this happening to SBTi or similar initiatives!
SCOOP: The Global Alliance for Responsible Media's activities are being "discontinued." It comes after Elon Musk's X filed a lawsuit against GARM parent The World Federation of Advertisers and some of its members earlier this week. Stephan Loerke, the CEO of the WFA, wrote in an email to members, seen by Business Insider, that the decision was "not made lightly" but that GARM is a not-for-profit organization with limited resources. https://lnkd.in/eFKxj9ka

THE X LAWSUIT AGAINST GARM IS DANGEROUSLY RELEVANT FOR CLIMATE CHANGE BACKGROUND Media platform X (formerly twitter) is suing GARM (the Global Alliance for Responsible Media, a non-profit with 2 full time employees). X is very 'crossed' about GARM releasing the 'brand safety' framework. This VOLUNTARY framework sets the parameters to define whether a media environment is 'safe' for a brand to advertise on. The definition of 'safety' revolves around things like hate speech, fake news etc. The more hate speech, fake news etc. the least 'safe' a platform is for a brand. WHAT X IS SAYING X is convinced that this framework was designed and openly used to invite advertisers to divert advertising dollars away from the X platform. (note: advertisers are the members/donors of Garm. In essence GARM facilitates a debate and consensus among them) It's true that X's ad revenue have been going down since Musk bought the company. But Twitter/X has always struggled to attract advertisers. It's a structural problem they have. COULD THIS HAPPEN TO NET-ZERO? (spoiler alert: I think so) SBTi (the Science Based Target initiative) is a non-profit. It sets the guidelines for what net zero targets look like for companies and how to achieve them. A key SBTi recommendation is for companies to work only/mainly with suppliers who have a net zero target their selves. Similar to X with GARM... could a big company file a lawsuit against SBTi for setting a VOLUNTARY framework that might penalise their business for not being net-zero?
New from me: It doesn't matter if Elon Musk's lawsuit against the World Federation of Advertisers and its members is frivolous — just the act of filing it could have its desired effect. I've previously reported on how a Republican-led investigation into the WFA's Global Alliance of Responsible Media was causing concern in the ad industry about the chilling effect it might have on GARM's work. Now enter the X lawsuit. And Rumble's. Many billable legal hours. And with big advertisers now being subpoenaed, sued, and hauled in for congressional hearings, there's further concern that similar initiatives to promote responsible advertising might have difficulty in getting off the ground in this highly charged political environment. Hope family, friends and colleagues in California are safe. Unfortunately, this is another sign that our lovely home (the planet) is changing. Rising temperatures and prolonged droughts dry out vegetation, creating more fuel for fires. https://lnkd.in/ehzyfaW4

The ideal partner is one that has your same philosophy, pushed your thinking and your product, and it's also a lot of fun to work with. XR Extreme Reach ticks all these boxes. The formidable Simon Sikorski and Emma Horton and the rest of the team: - are highly committed to net-zero (not just measuring) - have embraced our transition platform capabilities in full (and feeding into our roadmap) - are always a pleasure to interact with (in meetings or on stage) In this article they talk in detail about how they are changing the way they operate to meet the ambition.
I enjoyed having this conversations with Susie Stulz at AdMonsters about the shift towards sustainable outcomes in advertising. #XRsustainability #XRExtremeReach https://lnkd.in/gDR4MEaY

Data centres are the factories of the 21st century. 🏭 Microsoft increased emissions by 30% in 2023 v. 2020. This follows Google increasing emissions by 50%. This is obviously not good news, but it's interesting how Microsoft explains that the increase is mainly due to "the construction of more datacenters and the associated embodied carbon in building materials, as well as hardware components such as semiconductors, servers, and racks" Unexpectedly, the emissions of a tech company like Microsoft are related to "concrete, steel, fuels"! 🔩🏗️⛽ Read an extract of the sustainability report here: https://lnkd.in/eczZ5jjP.
