We had an amazing time hosting the ChatGPT Lab at the University of Edinburgh Business School's Global Alumni Day last week. Our clever little robo-friend ChatGPT did NOT disappoint! Between serving us as a crafty tax advisor to an industrious data analyst, it was great showcasing how painless, versatile, (and fun!?) using this tool can be--even for the ultimate beginner. Delighted to share I have been elected Co-President of University of Edinburgh's Accessible AI Society! I'm excited to take over from George Wells and Julius Jacob Gasser's very capable and talented hands, and to continue the society's mission of empowering individuals from any background to engage with and discuss Artificial Intelligence. We already have some exciting events coming up including workshops for senior management on making the best use of AI tools in their department, and how students can be using AI responsibly in their job searches. Digital and data literacy, especially in the rapid commercialisation and adoption of AI, is essential and no one should be left behind.

In 2024, the ability to use AI is high on in-demand skill rankings⬆️ A future where the workforce will be inseparable to AI is approaching, and we as students need to act faster to get familiar with it. Last week I was in the very first event of Accessible AI within University of Edinburgh Business School organized and hosted by Julius Jacob Gasser, George Wells, Enia Loeza and Laura Leiper. This new born society is dedicated to a very meaningful purpose, that is to remove all of the technical barriers that stops people from learning AI. There're already many debates on how, where and what should we use AI on, but one undeniable truth is that “we WILL be using AI”. With that being said, one aspect where it can certain help is job hunting. From CV revision and interview practice to future career planning, over 20 AI tools are now available for job hunters to increase the chance to obtain a position. I am very excited by the contributions this society could bring in the future years as many fellow Business School students in UoE show strong interest in learning more about AI. Our first event, The Job Hunter's Guide to Al, was a huge success! - Over 20 Al tools demonstrated - 2 live prompting demos - Over 100 registered attendees - First Al-focused workshop held at The University of Edinburgh Business School - The largest Al tool workshop ever held at The University of Edinburgh! Special thanks to Katerina Chatziioannou-Faulds and Jo McLaren from the UEBS Student Development Team along with Alexandra B., George Wells, Julius Jacob Gasser, and Enia Loeza for sharing their expertise and Laura Leiper for coordinating the event! Last week, George Wells and Laura Leiper had the pleasure of representing Accessible AI at the Economist Impact’s 4th Annual Business Innovation Summit in London. As passionate believers in AI accessibility and digital literacy, a few statements particularly resonated with us: “Jobs aren’t being taken by AI, they’re being taken by people who can leverage AI.” - Dušan Šenkypl, Interim CEO of Groupon, emphasizes a shift in our understanding of AI's impact on employment. It’s not about job displacement; it’s about employee adaptation. When you’re hiring, "build a team of AI-literate employees.” - This was LinkedIn COO, Daniel Shapero's advice to executives looking to better integrate AI into their operations. It's a powerful reminder that exposure to AI tools is becoming a baseline requirement in the modern job market. “Just go and try some tools!” - Another quote from Shapero, and one of our favorites from the day. The message? Start small, experiment, learn, and have fun with it. When it comes to AI, learning by doing is key. Our lasting impression from the event? ⭐ If you’re feeling “behind” in the AI dialogue, you’re not alone. Despite the buttoned-up narrative you see on social media, the intricacies of AI remain a puzzle for many. The journey of AI is one of ongoing exploration and experimentation. What matters is taking those first fateful steps to engage with AI. Start simple--but start now. Engaging with AI today is an opportunity to stand out tomorrow.
