In March 2022, after building up her manufacturing business for over a decade, Maria Bubnova had to leave Mariupol, Ukraine, empty-handed. She moved to the Netherlands with her children and got to work on a new business model with her husband. In November 2023, Abt and the Government of Ukraine launched the Women’s Business Empowerment Programme “Grow” (“Zrostai”) under the Good Governance Fund project to support female entrepreneurs from war-affected communities. Between the rubble of Ukrainian office towers, Farida Borysenko sweeps crumbs from tables while espresso machines hiss in the background. “It’s a break from the bombs and shelling that keep us awake,” she says. There are few, if any, modern examples economists could use to explain or predict the patterns of demand Ukrainian entrepreneurs are experiencing - but the desire for normalcy and small luxuries seems to sustain Farida’s business, which she named V Momenti (or “In the Moment”). Farida was one of nearly 200 women who applied for business revitalisation support through the Abt-led Good Governance Fund's Grow initiative, which provides mentorship and other resources to help her grow her business. Her coffee shop is one of over 37,000 new businesses that opened in 2023 - more than Ukraine registered in 2021 before the war. Over half of these ventures were launched by women entrepreneurs, many of whom are looking to scale and sell abroad. In Australia, we are committed to the #Reconciliation journey and continue to strengthen and develop personal connections and foster collaboration with #Aboriginal and #TorresStraitIslander peoples, communities and organisations, and empower staff to engage and contribute. Allan Sarago-Ah Kee joined Abt in April 2024 and is working on a range of projects aimed at reducing the disproportionate number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who are placed in out of home care and women experiencing family and domestic violence.  Allan is committed to #closingthegap of the social and economic outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and non-Indigenous peoples’ – particularly in education, health, sport and housing.    Building connections between indigenous communities beyond national borders, a delegation of senior education officials from #PapuaNewGuinea recently visited Good to Great Schools Australia (GGSA) as part of a learning exchange. GGSA is an Indigenous-owned non-profit organisation which collaborates with schools in Australia’s Cape York peninsula to enhance student learning outcomes. Facilitated by Australian Government program Partnerships for Improving Education (PIE), the exchange focused on generating innovative ideas and approaches to tackle the challenges faced by remote rural schools in #PNG and #Australia. Students at Hopevale Primary school showcased their culture through Indigenous Aboriginal song and dance, while teachers shared their experience with consistent teaching strategies and approaches to help students improve their literacy and mathematics foundations.
