A new report published by The Association of Commonwealth Universities highlights five critical thematic challenges and opportunities that will shape the future of global #HigherEducation. It recommends key areas where #Commonwealth governments and #universities can work together to make a big impact. We look forward to introducing the report and recommendations at the upcoming #CHOGM2024 in Samoa and we will work with #ACUmembers to turn them into tangible actions that will drive positive change in their institutions, countries, and the broader Commonwealth community. The Rt Hon David Lammy spoke this week on the UK Government's vision for the diverse family of the #Commonwealth working together to solve the most pressing challenges in the world. We believe that #HigherEducation must be at the heart of these efforts to sustainably tackle these challenges and to deliver on its transformative potential across the Commonwealth higher education needs: - Sustainable funding and finance - Improved access for less represented groups - Adaptable skills training for an ever changing economy - Truly inclusive and internationally cooperative research ecosystems - To shape the development of powerful AI technologies to address the needs of diverse societies We look forward to attending #CHOGM in Samoa next month and will make the case for the vital function that higher education must play in addressing the myriad challenges of the future. https://lnkd.in/eWa-M2JC
What makes the Commonwealth so unique? To answer this, I start with my own history. My parents came to Britain from Guyana, as part of the Windrush generation. Through them, I can trace my lineage back to Africa – through the horrors of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. I feel the pain and anguish of that heritage, as did my parents. Yet I share with them a pride in my Commonwealth roots. It gives me a sense of belonging and solidarity with all members of the Commonwealth diaspora. This week, I met some of the brilliant members of that diaspora at a Commonwealth reception. Artists, activists and authors. People like Benson and Isabella – New Zealand-born Samoan singers who are rising stars on the English opera scene. This connection spanning continents and generations is why the Commonwealth feels like a family. But to grasp the Commonwealth’s singular nature, it also helps to turn to great figures in its history. Nearly two years since her death, we treasure Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s role in bringing the people of the Commonwealth closer together. The affection in which she is held across the Commonwealth is a testament to her skills as a diplomat – she was, quite simply, the greatest diplomat of our time. But it equally testifies to her vision for how to do diplomacy – a vision, frankly, far ahead of its time. A vision of the Global North and Global South working together, in a spirit of partnership. A vision the Commonwealth exemplifies, as a forum in which voices from all corners of the globe are heard and respected. Her late Majesty worked with six Secretaries-General, amongst them Sir Shridath ‘Sonny’ Ramphal. This great Guyanese diplomat passed away last month. He also championed this vision of the Commonwealth as an organisation which can forge closer, more equitable relations between the Global North and Global South. He described Commonwealth summits as a bit like a club. Not, he stressed, in the sense of being exclusive or elitist. In fact, the Commonwealth incorporates members great and small, from all over the world, and has now expanded to cover one third of the world’s population. But he sensed a unique chemistry between leaders at Commonwealth summits. Leaders had different points of view, faced different circumstances. But they would nevertheless come together and agree to deliver things together. Next month, for the first time since Her late Majesty and Sir Sonny passed, Commonwealth leaders will gather in Samoa for their next regular summit – His Majesty King Charles III’s first as Head of the Commonwealth, and the first ever to be held in a Pacific Island Country. Together, we can use the unique platform of the Commonwealth so that our diverse membership can tackle global challenges and make a positive impact for all.

Happy to be back in #Mumbai, but have to say I've left a part of me in #Singapore on this occasion. The country's world-leading #universities are an inspiration in terms of their #research prowess, genuine focus on #sustainability, and most importantly (for me) the true #humility of their leaders, who seem to carry on being #excellent in almost everything they do, in a simple, yet unassailable way. During this visit - I enjoyed delivering a talk on the #Indian HE landscape at National University of Singapore, where I was grateful for the warm reception from Sau Kim Lum, Nan Sze Marie-Antonie 蔡蓝诗 Chua, Linda Cheng Lui Ling among other exceptional colleagues. Special thanks to Biquan Chua for arranging everything before hand. The Association of Commonwealth Universities counts #NUS among our key members in the #APAC region, and this talk was an important follow-up from the visit by Professor Colin Riordan and myself a few months ago, in support of our desire to foster deeper connections across the region. A great pleasure to visit Singapore Management University to meet with Venky Shankararaman, and to visit LASALLE College of the Arts to meet with Leon Rubin. Thank you for your hospitality, and for being so generous with your time at short notice. Sincere thanks to Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) for your kind hospitality - an absolute pleasure to meet up again with Meen Sheng Yap, Yeo Lay, and other academic & non-academic colleagues. A visit to Coventry University's brand new offices at Fusionopolis remind us of the important role #universities play in society, industry, as well as the work of governments. Always good to catch-up with Dr. Michael Yap, whose name comes up in just about every conversation one has in Singapore - we are truly fortunate to have you as an #ACU Ambassador, Michael, and kudos to all the work you do in building up #UK-Singapore relations. Finally I should highlight the spontaneous, but enlightening interactions with Marcel Bandur of Studyportals and (my old friend) Vinay Vimalan of Capital Placement which made the visit even more interesting than originally planned! I suppose this is the joy of being part of such an #interconnected and #international sector - you never know who you'll meet, in just about any part of the world 🌏 Thanks again, #Singapore - Happy National Day! For now, am back to my morning walks around the Gateway of India, but look forward to visiting again soon. Beth Button Laura Pritsch Kathryn J. Juliana Bertazzo Ikita Pokharna Adeniyi Emmanuel

I’ve been saying to colleagues at The Association of Commonwealth Universities that I’ve been having lots of (delicious) pie 🥧 over the last few days in Mumbai 🇮🇳 and here in Queensland 🇦🇺 Thank you to Amy Baker Clare Gossage Jane Gilham Damla Erciyeş Sean Dyer and colleagues for being such fantastic hosts at both events, and for facilitating an interesting exchange of ideas on the state of #highereducation in #India and the #AsiaPacific region, with a superb line up of speakers and an eclectic mix of attendees. It’s been fabulous meeting with friends, colleagues, seeing our members, and future collaborators across both cities 🌊 Lovely (as always!) to spend time with Professor Stewart Gill, at Brisbane airport on Sunday afternoon! Stewart’s contribution to our work in #Australia is crucial to achieving our overall mission, and I know that Colin Riordan and Beth Button are looking forward to their visit to #Melbourne in a few months to take this forward in the lead up to #CHOGM. I am now looking forward to the next couple of days in #Brisbane, where I’m returning after over a decade. Laura Pritsch Kathryn J. Juliana Bertazzo Ikita Pokharna Adeniyi Emmanuel

What an incredible 10 days we've had in #Ghana! 🇬🇭 #ACU’s Chief Executive and Secretary General Prof. Colin Riordan and I have just concluded our series of engagement visits with our members and partners in Ghana. During this time, we visited three Ghanaian cities: #Kumasi, #Accra, and #CapeCoast. Immense thanks to all our collaborators and partners in Ghana who made this trip so productive. Special thanks to the Vice Chancellors and management staff of the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, University of Cape Coast, University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), and All Nations University. Our visit to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) as a government collaborator was also crucial as we reflected on some of our key work around #policy and governance in higher education across the Commonwealth. Beyond our engagements with members and partners, Prof. Colin Riordan took the opportunity to visit some culturally and historically significant sites, including the #Asante Palace and Cape Coast #Castle. These visits left us both with a deeper appreciation of Ghanaian and, by extension, West African culture and heritage. As we look to the future, we are excited about the opportunities for growth and collaboration that lie ahead. Our time in Ghana has reinforced the importance of strong partnerships and informed our thinking on the kind of support our #members in this part of the world need.
