Truly sustainable electric motors
About us
Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) designs and manufactures next-generation sustainable electric motors and powertrain systems that eliminate rare-earth magnets and copper windings whilst still offering market-leading performance and efficiency that rivals that of permanent magnet motors. AEM collaborates with world-class academics, global vehicle manufacturers and leading industrial partners to deliver the most sustainable and highest performing technologies for electric vehicles. From creating high-power, e-axle systems with Bentley Motors for their world-renowned luxury cars, to delivering breakthrough integrated solutions for the next generation of electrified commercial vehicles with Tevva Hydrogen Electric Trucks. AEM has two main families of electric motors: HDSRM is a magnet-free traction motor optimised for a robust, high-performance solution. It can easily be integrated into a variety of vehicle platforms with a scalable and modular design to meet a wide range of power torque requirements for commercial vehicle, industrial, agricultural and even trailer applications. HDSRM benefits from AEM’s patented efficiency-boost technology, which has led customers to report up to a 12% increase in their vehicle range. SSRD provides class-leading performance for passenger vehicles with a 45% improved power-to-weight ratio compared to leading permanent magnet motor designs, whilst still offering all the sustainability benefits of HDSRM. SSRD can also be offered as a fully integrated e-axle system to extend the ultra-high efficiency range across more real-world operating points, all in a cost-effective, lightweight and robust package. Our reluctance motors offer something unique—freewheeling capability. Unlike conventional electric motors, our reluctance motors operate without permanent magnets. So, without magnetic forces in the rotor, they can spin freely when not energised, resulting in zero drag and zero losses. This feature makes our motors ideal for applications like towed vehicles where efficiency and versatility are paramount. Permanent magnet motors would continue to generate electricity when towed, potentially leading to wasted energy and wear over time. With our reluctance motors, when they’re off, they’re truly off—no energy consumption, no drag, and no unnecessary wear. Want to find out more? A couple of months ago, AEM attended Road Transport Expo 2024, where we showcased our HDSRM300 motor for an innovative retrofit kinetic energy recovery system (KERS). We are pleased to share that our motor was featured in a video produced by Edison Motors Ltd, with a highlight around the 3-minute mark. We extend our gratitude to Edison Motors for showcasing the strength and innovation of our engineering. Watch the full video below to gain insights into the exciting advancements at RTX 2024.

An interesting article from Transport Topics discussing the strengths and opportunities of electric Transport Refrigeration Units (TRUs), which are a critical element in fresh food distribution across the world. TRUs are just one of many applications for our power-dense, high-efficiency and freewheeling electric motor, HDSRM150. What’s more, it’s rare-earth free, making it a sustainable solution for both trailer manufacturers and fleet operators. The motor will be hitting the road later this year in our partner, SAF Holland’s, TRAKr power-generating e-Axle, which will be showcased at IAA in September.
The development of #electric #TRUs is influenced by many factors, such as #battery weight, #infrastructure, cost and use cases, writes Gary N. Frantz in this week's feature. Last Friday, the Advanced Electric Machines team embarked on a company social walk to our local landmark - Penshaw Monument! It was a fantastic way to spend the afternoon amidst the scenic beauty of the North East (even if we are still wearing coats in July). We know how important being outdoors is for our health and wellbeing, so this was a great opportunity to get our colleagues moving whilst socialising with others outside their normal departments. A special thank you to the New Plough Inn for providing refreshments at the end to all 31 of our hungry colleagues! #TeamBuilding #WorkLifeBalance #AdvancedElectricMachines

Sector Challenge: Passenger Cars The current generation of electric vehicles is far from truly sustainable, relying heavily on rare earth magnets and copper. While some manufacturers have made strides towards greener powertrains, they often face trade-offs between reliability, performance, and range. Our Solution: SSRD Next-Generation E-Axle We've engineered the SSRD next-generation e-axle to tackle these challenges head-on. By reducing the need for rare earths and copper, our SSRD e-axle not only meets but exceeds the performance levels of permanent magnet motors, all at a lower cost.
