Our brilliant Trustee Lilly James is today's Life After Prison guest on 'The Spark', the podcast's new strand focusing on women's experiences of the criminal justice system. She covers so much - including the impact of having her children removed, the topic of our most recent briefing, 'We Need Support'. The briefing was commissioned by Greater Manchester Combined Authority, where Lilly works as a Changing Futures worker at WHAG - she offered her personal and professional insight and expertisee as Co-Chair of the project. The number of women allegedly killed by men this year has reached 50 - although we know the true figure is higher. Labour have committed to halving violence against women and girls within a decade, but we're yet to see detail of how they hope to achieve this. We need a Secretary of State for Women and Girls appointed, to drive forward tackling this 'national emergency' with their full attention. End Violence Against Women Coalition have already written to the government with a clear proposed framework for a refreshed VAWG strategy, which we support. There have been so many high-profile cases of violence against women and girls in recent weeks. These are frightening and triggering for us all, especially survivors of abuse. UThe Three Hijabis is facilitating a emergency Rahma Safe Space for Muslim women, Thursday 8th August, 18:30 GMT. This protected online space is for sisters seeking psychological safety to share the impact of Islamophobic violence on our communities. Many Muslim women have reached out to us to share their fears and devastation. This is a space where we will listen and support each other and acknowledge racial trauma and its impacts. Prison is not and never will be a space of safety. In light of today's Safety in Custody statistics, showing again rising levels of self-harm, we echo Women in Prison's calls for the government to prioritise prevention, and invest in the community-based support women really need.

We cautiously welcome some of the developments announced in the King’s Speech, but reiterate the need for further planning around these bills to include gender-responsive approaches for women and girls experiencing multiple unmet needs.
