Enabling environmental and economic sustainability in agriculture.

About us

Agreena was founded by visionary farmers and fintech-savvies in 2018. What originated as an online commodity trading marketplace has since become one of the first soil carbon certification programmes in the pan-European landscape. Using a set of core practices, Agreena's platform supports farmers in their transition to regenerative agriculture with the issuance of third-party verified carbon certificates - which can be kept by the farmer or sold onto the voluntary carbon market (VCM) for offset purposes. Accredited to ISO 14064-2 standard, the AgreenaCarbon programme is based on a yearly harvest cycle, with the data capture process giving farmers the opportunity for payouts each year.

Investing in developing future agricultural practices is a key element in combating climate change. 🌍 The right investments are manyfold but can be in regenerative agriculture, a practice with positive contributions to both biodiversity as well as carbon emission reductions. At COP28 UAE, the global pledge to promote regenerative practices on 160 million hectares of land is a clear indicator: the future of agriculture includes regenerative practices, and Danish companies are at the forefront of this transformation. 🌱 🌾 As global agrifood leaders commit to investing in sustainability, Danish companies are also stepping up, integrating regenerative practices on an increasingly large scale. This movement, championed by innovators such as Agreena, DLG-koncernen, Carlsberg Group, and Arla Foods, is setting the stage for a greener future. They’re making strides in soil health, water quality, and biodiversity—all while ensuring that regenerative agriculture becomes economically viable. 🤝 What steps are being taken right now to reach these goals? Agreena will be out in full force at the World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit in London on 30 Sept-1 Oct. 🌍 Tom Blower, CPO, and Luke Quinn, Head of Solution Sales, will be leading a breakout session exploring the latest measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) tech for soil carbon sequestration and emissions reductions in agriculture. Over on the main stage, our CEO, Simon Haldrup, will give a talk on farmer-centric technology, discussing how best to incentivise, measure and support regenerative farming practices. Plus, you’ll be able to catch our team on the ground on both days of the summit, to discover more about our leading soil carbon programme and the positive climate and nature impacts it’s delivering. As a key European networking event for the agri-food industry, the summit will see us join more than 1,000 senior decision-makers, exploring the breakthrough innovations and collaborations needed to create a more sustainable and resilient food system. Ahead of the summit, take a look at World Agri-Tech’s interview with our CEO Simon. 👇 https://agreena.cc/4dIVSOf #WorldAgriTech #SoilCarbon #RegenerativeAgriculture

‘Banks need to reverse course and double down on their net zero commitments — not only to meet their own climate goals, but also to profit from the new business opportunities tied to the climate transition.’ - World Resources Institute 📈 Financial institutions have a vital role to play in financing the shift toward sustainable business models and practices, including regenerative agriculture, and many are increasingly aligning their financial flows with reaching net zero by 2050. But new WRI research shows that while the number of banks with net zero commitments has grown, many are unlikely to achieve them. While pressure on banks to allocate capital in ways that benefit people, nature and the climate continues to grow, the WRI’s assessment of 25 banks show there’s still plenty of room for improvement. 💡The good news is that the WRI identified a real willingness to keep improving among banks and their sustainability teams, with a ‘race to the top’ likely to emerge as some banks take the lead in this area. Agreena is proud to be working with banks to deliver vital financial support for regenerative farmers. We launched our first banking partnership in Ukraine earlier this year and are developing further finance partnerships which will help scale the delivery of a more sustainable global food system. What is remote sensing? 🌍 ➡️ Capturing measurements in a location without being physically present ⬅️ While remote sensing can be carried out using drones and cameras, at Agreena, we mainly use satellites within our dMRV approach. To detect and measure the fields in our programme, we use two different types of satellite: 🛰️ Optical This operates like a camera - light from the Sun hits the surface of the Earth, reflects and is captured by the satellite, capturing information about what’s happening on the ground. Normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) uses red and infrared channels to detect healthy vegetation – healthy plants reflect more infrared, rather than absorbing it. This means that when crops grow NDVI goes up and, after harvest when there is an absence of vegetation, NDVI drops. 📡 Radar After sending microwaves to illuminate the ground, this satellite recaptures the reflected information. It’s sensitive to rough surfaces, making it a useful tool for measuring differences in soil. Regardless of weather conditions, the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can acquire data throughout the season, providing even more information about what’s happening on the ground. By using two types of satellite data, we’re able to capture more information about what’s happening on the surface of the Earth, to train our machine-learning models for verification. Our advanced technology enables precise real-time and continuous monitoring of agricultural land in our programme, underpinning the credibility and integrity of the CO2e outcomes delivered by our AgreenaCarbon farmers. What is dMRV? 🤔 ➡️ Digital measurement, reporting and verification ⬅️ At Agreena, we use dMRV to verify which farming practices have been implemented in a specific field, over a given season. This allows us to verify the regenerative on-farm activity of fields in the AgreenaCarbon programme. One of the ways that we do this is by using remote sensing to verify essential regenerative agriculture practices - tillage and cover crops. 👉 Put simply, we analyse satellite imagery to identify whether crops are growing in the field between harvest seasons, and whether the soil has been ploughed. As well as using remote sensing, we also visit farms to visually inspect fields, adding another layer of verification. Our market-leading dMRV technology enables precise real-time and continuous monitoring of agricultural land in our portfolio and underpins the credibility and integrity of the CO2e outcomes delivered by our AgreenaCarbon farmers.
