  • Next up with our reintroductions is our Geo-Environmental Engineer - Tabetha Hellard! 👋 Get to know Tabetha with some quick-fire questions...⏳ What's your job role within AGS? I’m a geo-environmental engineer. What's your favourite beach in the world? I thought about this for a long while and I like too many beaches to decide on just one. I’d say instead that what I like about beaches is the feeling of them, as if they allow my soul to breathe, I don’t think there’s a beach I’ve been on that’s ever failed to lift my spirits. An optimum beach would have sand or smaller shingle, some interesting rocks to look at or for and the clearer the water the better so I can enjoy the colours within it. Do you have a party trick? I can solve a Rubik’s cube? Tell us the most exciting thing that you've done within AGS? I’ve packed so much into my 3 years with AGS now it’s hard to pick just one. Something I always find exciting is trial trenching to uncover previously unrecorded mine features, it allows for a really good visual assessment of what you can expect from the feature based on the condition. I’ve found both textbook examples where there’s a clear change in the ground and much subtler examples that really needed a keen eye to spot within the natural material. And lastly, but most importantly, what's your favourite ice cream flavour?! Cornish fudge. Thank you Tabetha, roll on our next team member next week! #AGSGroundsolutions #AGSTeam #gettoknowus #theteam

  • This week it's guess the location that we've worked at, starting with a fairly easy one...🤔 Here's a few fun facts to help you guess! - This place is home to the original Eddystone Lighthouse (1698 - 1703). It's notable as the first offshore lighthouse in the world and is constructed of wood. - It's also home to the UK's largest Aquarium, caring for more than 5,000 incredible aquatic creatures. - It became the first town in Britain to receive a fresh water supply from outside its boundaries thanks to Sir Francis Drake constructing a 14-mile leat from the River Meavy in 1591. So there you go, some fun facts to get you pondering! All answers are welcome, but we think that you've got this in the bag 😊 #AGS #AGSGroundSolutions #geotechnical #civilengineering #landscape #guessthelocation #geotechnicalengineering #structuralengineering #geotechnics #geology #surveying #geotech

  • We've been so excited to show you all this, and finally it's live - Our adventure down Rosevale Mine! Set in a beautiful and unspoiled rural location overlooking the sea near the village of Zennor, Rosevale Mine forms a unique part of the county's mining heritage. This privately funded restoration project has been undertaken over the past 40 years by a small group of volunteers using traditional methods and materials to preserve the underground workings as an authentic Cornish tin mine. We had the privilege of exploring the depths of this wonderful piece of Cornish Heritage, follow to part 2 where we reveal the true inner workings of the mine! #geotechnical #engineering #AGS #AGSGroundsolutions #Teambuilding #teamvisit #mining #mine #miningheritage #soilmechanics

  • Next up with our reintroductions is our Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Daryl Tilley! 👋 Get to know Daryl with some quick-fire questions...⏳ What's your job role within AGS? Senior Geotechnical Engineer & Project manager. What's your favourite beach in the world? Its a tight call but probably Gwithian for the combination of surf, sand and cracking view across St Ives Bay! The odd seal or dolphin also helps... Do you have a party trick? Not really no, 90% of my time seems to be surfing or climbing, neither of which are good for parties! Tell us the most exciting thing that you've done within AGS? Not being a particular fan of heights (shorthand for bloody terrified) the seven consecutive steel ladder downclimb through the shaft at our recent trip to Rosevale mine had my heart going a bit faster than usual... And lastly, but most importantly, what's your favourite ice cream flavour?! Mint choc chip everyday! Thank you Daryl, roll on our next team member next week! #AGSGroundsolutions #AGSTeam #gettoknowus #theteam

  • We were recently commissioned to help Bailey Partnership Ltd undertake a due diligence Contamination Investigation at Greenlands, Henley-on-Thames. During the conveyancing process, it had been highlighted that the site used to be a gas works. The site was a former manor house, and the gas works was privately owned, so there was very little published information about it. Using a combination of what archival records were available, with a combination of historical mapping and aerial photography, we were able to conclude that the gas works buildings were all still in-situ.   The purpose of the ground investigation was to determine contaminant levels and provide an assessment of environmental risks and liabilities at the site. Specialist PPE and cleaning had to be undertaken to prevent cross contamination and to keep our operatives safe during the work. We carried out the excavation of 8 no. dynamic sampling holes to 4.5 m, in full PPE, with the cleaning of tooling between each hole, completing the site work in just one day! #AGS #AGSGroundSolutions #geotechnical #engineering #civilengineering #geotechnicalengineering #structuralengineering #geotechnics #engineer #geology #surveying #civilwork #geotech #civilengineersblog

  • Next up with our reintroductions is our Marketing Manager - Flo Tippetts Hill! 👋 Get to know Flo with some quick-fire questions...⏳ What's your job role within AGS? I'm the Marketing Manager for AGS - everything you see on our social media, photography and video content, and email marketing is created by yours truly! Which also means that I'm answering my own questions, but that's part of the job! What's your favourite beach in the world? Oooft. Okay, so if we're talking about in the world, it would have to be the soothing white sand beaches and calm waters of St Lucia or Costa Rica. But that's just because I'm a sucker for warm water. Otherwise Cornwall is pretty unbeatable! Do you have a party trick? It may be yodelling, and no, I won't be cracking that out any time soon. Tell us the most exciting thing that you've done within AGS? I haven't been in the company for long, but we've already done something extremely exciting and seemingly out of my comfort zone, by going down a mine! I felt privileged to have experienced such an important part of Cornish history and proud of myself for sticking with it, especially when 400 ft below the ground! I'm not giving too much away as this will be featured on our socials very soon... And lastly, but most importantly, what's your favourite ice-cream flavour?! Don't freak out, but I've recently discovered Turkish Delight flavoured ice-cream. Trust me when I say it's de-lish. Or Dark Chocolate and Ginger, I'm all about the gourmet flavours honey. Right, that's me done, I'm interviewing the rest of our team very shortly... #AGSGroundsolutions #AGSTeam #gettoknowus #theteam

  • Here's how we solved Little Tredragon! 🌈 AGS Ground Solutions carried out a coastal regression analysis from desk-based resources which identified that the regression of the cliff adjacent to the site had been negligible in the past 150 years, and that in some measurement periods there had been accretion rather than erosion. To further minimise the risks of instability, we proposed a foundation solution which transferred the loads from the building onto the underlying bedrock, rather than superficial deposits.  To obtain information on the near-surface soils for ground contamination and slope stability purposes, we used our lightweight window sampling equipment, and trial pits. We also carried out a period of monitoring on the site to establish the true groundwater level. The information from the combined investigation techniques was used to build a geological model and geotechnical properties to be derived. Our work allowed the design of foundations & retaining walls and allowed an assessment of slope stability to be undertaken. Enabling the discharge of pre-commencement planning conditions and facilitating the project!  Our work allowed a family to build their dream home!      #AGS #AGSGroundSolutions #geotechnical #geotechnicalengineering #civil #structuralengineering #drilling #geotechnics #civilengineer #geology #surveying #civilwork #geotech #heavyequipment #cornwall #cornishlandscape #drillingrig #steel #reinforcement #civilengineersblog #soilmechanics

  • Case Study: Little Tredragon! 🌈 We were commissioned to obtain a Geotechnical, Ground Contamination and Slope Stability Site Investigation on a small brownfield plot on the beautiful coastal landscape of Little Tredragon. Our client had acquired this plot in a coastal location in the village of Mawgan Porth. They had been looking to develop a sustainable family home on the site. The site had previously been developed with a 1930s bungalow. Because of the proximity of the site to the coast, there were issues to be resolved about ground stability, and information was required for the design of foundations and a basement design.   The new build was in a residential area, and all works had to be mindful and respectful of neighbours.  Solutions Delivered: Slope Stability Risk Assessment  Piled Foundation Solution  Retaining Wall Solution  Shallow Foundation Solution  Contamination Remedial Strategy  Follow to see how we completed this project! #AGS #AGSGroundSolutions #geotechnical #geotechnicalengineering #civil #structuralengineering #drilling #geotechnics #civilengineer #geology #surveying #civilwork #geotech #heavyequipment #cornwall #cornishlandscape #drillingrig #steel #reinforcement #civilengineersblog #soilmechanics
