safe homes and better futures for lgbtq+ young people
About us
akt supports LGBTQ+ people aged 16-25 in the UK who are facing or experiencing homelessness or living in a hostile environment. Did you know that 24% of young homeless people in the UK are LGBTQ+? LGBTQ+ people are much more likely to be made homeless because of their gender or sexual identity, and 78% of all of the young people that come to akt cite familial abuse and rejection ad the cause of their homelessness. This is why akt is so vital. We support young people into safe homes and employment, education or training, in a welcoming and open environment that celebrates LGBTQ+ identities. ⚠️ This is a true story of how homophobic abuse can lead to a young person sleeping on the streets and feeling unsafe. To protect their identity, their name has been changed but the story is true. ⚠️ Asif* came to the UK from Pakistan on a student visa, supported by his family. After coming out as gay, his uncle kicked him out and his family cut off financial support. Asif had nowhere else to turn and with his family also rejecting him, he had to apply for an asylum claim. This meant he was forced to leave university and accrue £8,000 in debt. akt worked with Immigration Aid to get his debt written off and supported him in finding accommodation, managing independent living, and accessing mentoring and other young people to form friendships. Asif now has Indefinite Leave to Remain, started full-time work, and plans to resume his accountancy studies. Please donate to akt today. You could make a difference to a young person at risk of experiencing homelessness and help them feel safe and secure at home and in themselves. 🌈💖❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ePijKHJk

🌈 29% of LGBTQ+ youth came to akt due to family reasons. The reality is, it still isn't safe for LGBTQ+ youth in the UK. akt is the only charity in the UK that specialises in LGBTQ+ youth homelessness, and we need your support. Please share and donate today, to help us continue our vital work. Every contribution counts. 🙏 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gn83cMQ7

🎉🏳️🌈 Huge thank you to Pret A Manger this pride! 🏳️🌈🎉 akt are proud to continue our partnership with Pret to help support LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness. 🌟 You’ll see that Pret have added a lovely donation screen to their tills, and 10p from each of their gorgeous Love Bar sales will be donated to akt across June and July this year. Thank you to everyone shopping, and the wonderful team at Pret for helping us provide safe homes and better futures for LGBTQ+ youth 💜 #Pride #Pride2024 #SupportLGBTQYouth #aktcharity

✨ Thank you Pret A Manger for your continued support! Be sure to donate to akt the next time you visit in store 💜
Was getting some lunch today at Pret A Manger and saw this lovely display by the tills which is raising funds for the fantastic charity akt. So good to see big companies like Pret giving back and doing what they can to support different charities. They already do so much amazing work with their Pret Foundation, making sure any unsold food goes to people in need at the end of each day. Great to see Pret A Manger supporting akt as well. Such a great idea and way to fundraise. 👏🏽

🌈 If akt didn’t exist, there would be many more young people too scared to come out, too scared to be their authentic selves, or living on the streets or somewhere hostile or unsafe. At akt, we believe no one should have to choose between a safe home and being who they are. Without your unwavering support over the last 35 years, we wouldn’t have been able to support over 50,000 LGBTQ+ young people and provide more than 250,000 nights off the street. You have made this possible, and together we can end LGBTQ+ youth homelessness. 🌈💖❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 We help young people in many different ways, and provide pathways into safe and secure accommodation, to ensure that young LGBTQ+ people can thrive: • Emergency housing and support • Finding safe and secure long term homes • Financial support (deposit and rent) • Independent living costs • Support with accessing benefits • Access to mental health support • Long term 1 to 1 case work • Self-advocacy • Support finding your community • Live chat and digital resources Please donate what you can today. Thank you! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eyKwzyrn

akt at Pride in London 2024. A very special and overwhelmingly joyful day for us all. But also noting that Pride began as a protest so wanting to strike the right balance of joy, being proud and outrage for more inclusivity of the LGBTQ+ community. It was such an important day for us to be marching and all we stand for. LGBTQ+ youth still don't have safe homes, and we will continue to to fight to end LGBTQ+ youth homelessness. But let me bring it back now to the joyful part. Look at all the happy, gorgeous faces in these photos - colleagues, volunteers, corporate partners all coming together for akt. Thank you for your unwavering support: Blackstone, CityFibre, ESTELLA BARTLETT, Flying Tiger Copenhagen, Morrisons, PHO Café, Pret A Manger, Vitesse PSP Limited and Marks and Spencer. You made a great day even better by empowering each other and raising awareness of the work that akt does. And thank you to Mark Kiley, and Dee Whitnell for marching with us, and James Klug, our photographer, for taking amazing photos of the day!
