Understanding ISO 14068 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standard In the global effort to combat climate change, standardisation of how greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are managed and reported is crucial. ISO 14068, an integral part of the ISO 14000 family of environmental management standards, provides a robust framework for organisations looking to quantify, monitor, and report their greenhouse gas emissions. This standard is designed to promote transparency and consistency in GHG reporting, crucial for stakeholders including investors, customers, and regulatory bodies.

EPBD & MEES – What they are and how they affect businesses and commercial buildings By Chris Gunn Back in 2001, the first European Directive aimed at improving the energy performance of buildings was published in draft form. It came into force almost unscathed in 2003 and from 2008 was the foundation stone for the mandatory use of energy performance certificates (EPCs) across the EU when buildings are constructed, sold or let. Known as the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), it became the main regulatory tool in all EU countries for policy makers tackling energy and climate issues in the buildings sector.

Blackline Safety Europe Receives Carbon Neutral Verification to PAS 2060 Blackline Safety Corp a global leader in connected safety technology, has announced that its European operations have been independently verified as carbon neutral for all measured emissions during the previous fiscal year. Certification organisation NQA was responsible for the verification against the internationally recognised standard for carbon neutrality, PAS 2060. Blackline Safety – headquartered in Canada with offices in the UK and France – manufactures and provides monitoring services for its award-winning line of connected safety wearable and area gas monitors, currently used by 2,000 organizations and 50,000 lone workers in Europe, North America, and the Middle East. “The company began the journey to carbon neutrality across our global business as part of our commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance initiatives, which have been evidenced in our annual ESG report since 2020,” said Lacey Griffin, Blackline Safety’s Quality & Compliance Co-ordinator for UK & Europe. “Last year, our European business announced the results of our first-ever Carbon Footprint report, commissioned to track both direct and indirect carbon emissions and conducted with carbon consultants Auditel,” Griffin said. “As a result of the report and subsequent emissions reduction plan for each site, we have successfully achieved our goal and verified our status.” Blackline Safety Europe’s carbon footprint was calculated in line with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol emission scopes, which include direct emissions from combustion of gas and other fuels, emissions resulting from the generation of electricity and other energy purchased (but generated elsewhere), and emissions made by third parties in connection with operational activities. Now, the company’s sights are set on continuing its environmental journey by working towards gaining the new ISO 14068 Climate Change Management Standard, Griffin explained. “Blackline Safety understands the importance of protecting the communities in which we operate and the world as a whole, and will continue to play our part in protecting the environment and providing a sustainable future for the generations to come,” she said. “Our European operations will continue to measure our carbon footprint and identify and implement emission reduction plans, while being true to our overarching company values of driving innovation, resiliency, demonstrating leadership, going the extra mile, and empowering people.”

Castell Howell commit to achieving Net Zero by 2050 Castell Howell continues to be a leader in the hospitality sector with commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050 at the latest, with the help of their Carbon Partner Auditel. Castell Howell are the leading hospitality and foodservice wholesalers and distributors in Wales. Established in 1988, they now have a fleet of over 200 vehicles delivering to customers across Wales, the borders and the West Country. Matt Lewis Managing Director, comments. “Our supply chains extend across Wales, the UK and globally and we recognise that we have a responsibility to address the environmental impact of our operation and of the 14000 products sold. We’ve been completing the mandatory energy reporting and have invested to reduce our energy use and emissions, however, to be considered as Net Zero market leaders we need to employ the services of external professionals. Consequently, we have launched our partnership with Auditel to advise and help steer us through the challenges that lay ahead. Our Vision to reach Net Zero Our Carbon Reduction Plan commits the business to be Net Zero by 2050, at the latest. Our ambition is to be market leaders in the food supply chain, working in partnership with colleagues, customers, and suppliers to achieve this goal. The business is heavily reliant on energy and fuel to operate. We need to explore all options to minimise our use of non-renewable energy and manage our resources efficiently. Accurate measurement of our scope 1 and scope 2 impacts is critical in order to establish a baseline that we are confident is as accurate as possible. From here we can work across our supply chain to evaluate our scope 3. Many of our customers and suppliers are on a similar journey, it’s important that our part in the supply chain is independently verified and that our targets are aligned with theirs, being pragmatic, realistic and achievable. Our aim is be market leaders in establishing a net zero supply chain and we have been developing our relationships with our suppliers for numerous years, the partnership with Auditel will help strengthen our message. We have completed a life cycle assessment of our organic salmon portions, and working with NFU Energy we’ve completed carbon audits at two farms who supply us with Welsh beef. We have introduced LED lighting, invested in our refrigeration system, installed solar panels and we purchase vehicles that are as efficient as possible with an electric multi-temperature delivery vehicle being added to the fleet from Autumn 2024.”

St Peter & St James Hospice outstanding care for people and now the planet as they target Net Zero. St Peter & St James Hospice are proud of their commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050 with the help of their Carbon Partner Auditel. St Peter & St James Hospice provides, after free expert care and support to adults living with progressive life limiting conditions in our community. Their community is centred in East and West Sussex and includes Burgess Hill, Lewes, Uckfield and everywhere in-between. In addition to their core services they provide counselling, welfare advice, companionship, complementary therapy and much more besides. The hospice itself is located in an idyllic location between Lewes and Haywards Heath surrounded by 30 acres of woodland and green spaces overlooking the South Downs. Our Net ZERO Mission Milton Watts, Head of Facilities and Estates comments. “St Peter & St James Hospice have around 150 staff and over 400 volunteers and like many hospices most of our income is generated through our fundraising activities and our retail shops. Our mission is to provide the best possible care, in the right place, at the right time to everyone who needs us. In 2022 we included Net Zero as one of the five strategic aims in our three-year strategy plan 2022 – 2025. At the heart of this plan are our core values for compassion, integrity, accountability, excellence and inclusivity. Aligned with these values, we want to do all that we can to protect the environment for current and future generations and increase the chances of people living longer, healthier lives. There is a huge level of support and commitment across our hospice community for achieving this. Since launching our strategy in 2022 we have made good, steady progress: we are recycling more; we have installed LED lighting across our hospice and retail sites; we’ve invested in more energy efficient office equipment; we’ve reduced our vehicle fleet and we’re exploring solar PV options. We’re also much more selective now in the products we purchase and the suppliers we work with. But we realise there is more that we can and must do to achieve Net Zero and that we need to do this in a more structured and measured way, over a longer time period.“

Thomas Halliwell stay ahead of the game with strategic mission to become Net Zero. Thomas Halliwell Ltd are delighted to announce that they have joined forces with their Carbon Partner, Auditel, to deliver on their strategic commitment of reaching Net Zero. Thomas Halliwell Ltd is a respected and trusted mechanical, electrical and renewable energy contractor that provides effective and bespoke solutions to its clients across the UK in industries that range from pharmaceuticals to space exploration. Jon Halliwell, Director at Thomas Halliwell, said. “As an ambitious and future-thinking company, we want to grow in a way that is sustainable and responsible – protecting our planet and the environment. We are committed to our goal of becoming carbon neutral in the coming years while on our longer-term journey to reach Net Zero. To help on this mission, we have joined forces with Auditel, who have produced our first carbon footprint report. We decided to partner with Auditel to get their expert opinion on where we were already succeeding on our sustainability mission – along with the areas where we could improve. Together we have completed the first phase of our journey and now have a detailed breakdown of our carbon footprint across scope 1, 2 and 3 which totals 129.52 tCO2e As a small to medium size enterprise working in mechanical and electrical (M&E), we are not aware of anyone like us who has taken taking this step on the journey to becoming carbon neutral and reaching Net Zero. Obviously, the UK government has made a legal commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and we were keen to ‘stay ahead of the game’. Auditel’s report helped us identify that most of our emissions come from transport. We’re a nationwide business and our employees are sometimes required to go across the country to complete jobs for our clients. This kind of travel is mainly unavoidable for the growth of our business, so we have already identified ways of helping to cut these emissions – including purchasing an electric van to use on our more local jobs. We’re also excited about the prospect of investing in new low carbon emitting technologies in the future while looking into ways we can offset our emissions.” Auditels Carbon Specialist Mark Appleton comments. “It’s great to be working with the team at Thomas Halliwell and they are showing real leadership in their sector. They are reducing their own carbon footprint but also helping their customers reduce their carbon emissions as well and becoming a vital “low carbon” link in their customers supply chain. With many of their public and private sector clients also addressing their carbon emissions this is enabling Thomas Halliwell to make carbon management a competitive advantage for them because they are really aligning with their customer’s needs.”

Electric Cars – Do They Really Reduce Carbon Emissions? Introduction to Electric Cars and Carbon Emissions Electric cars have been marketed as a significant part of the solution to the global environmental crisis, touted for their potential to reduce the carbon footprint of the transportation sector. As countries around the world intensify their efforts to combat climate change, the shift from traditional internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) has been accelerating. However, the question remains: do electric cars genuinely reduce carbon emissions? Life Cycle Emissions of Electric Cars To assess whether electric cars reduce carbon emissions, it’s essential to consider the entire life cycle of the vehicle. This includes manufacturing, operation, and end-of-life disposal. Manufacturing Emissions The production of electric cars, particularly the batteries, is more energy-intensive compared to conventional cars. The extraction and processing of raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel necessary for battery production can lead to significant environmental degradation and greenhouse gas emissions. However, these initial higher emissions can be offset over the vehicle’s operational life, depending on several factors like the source of the electricity used to charge the batteries. Operational Emissions Electric cars shine during the operational phase. Unlike conventional vehicles that burn petrol or diesel, electric cars run on electricity, which can potentially be sourced from renewable energy. In regions where the energy grid is largely powered by renewables such as hydro, wind, or solar, the carbon emissions associated with driving an electric car can be minimal. Conversely, in areas where fossil fuels dominate the power grid, the benefits are less pronounced, though improvements in emission standards and cleaner technology are gradually changing this dynamic. End-of-Life Management The disposal and recycling of electric cars, especially batteries, pose a significant challenge. While recycling methods are improving, the process is not yet widespread or entirely efficient. Advances in battery technology and recycling processes are crucial to reducing the environmental impact at this stage. Conclusion Electric cars do indeed offer a viable solution for reducing carbon emissions, particularly when considering the full lifecycle of the vehicles. While challenges remain, particularly in the areas of battery production and end-of-life disposal, the benefits during the operational phase are clear. As the electricity grid becomes greener and technology advances, the role of electric cars in achieving carbon reduction goals will only grow more significant. For governments and individuals alike, continuing to support and adopt electric vehicle technology is essential for a sustainable automotive future. Share this:
