Business Analysis Learning and Innovation Festival Edinburgh - Your BA Festival in a Day

About us

Once upon a time there was a small group of Business Analysts and they had a simple yet great idea: A Business Analysis conference for BAs, created and hosted by BAs ...and so BA Life was born. What follows is our story and the thinking behind BA Life and its creation... BA Life is an acronym which describes both the idea and the people involved in its inception; its full title is 'Business Analysis Learning & Innovation Festival Edinburgh'. The 'Business Analysis' part is easy, all involved are Business Analysts with many years of experience. The 'Edinburgh' ending is because that is our home - and when the COVID craziness finally subsides, that wonderful city will be where the live 'in person' conference will take place. We then have the middle part... Like all great disciplines, Business Analysis has grown and developed and in turn has gained a highly regarded reputation in the IT world for the incredible positive impact Business Analysts have on a project and business as a whole (yes, we know some folk have still yet to catch up on this fact, but they'll get there!) This means 'Learning & Innovation' is a key part of our success, now and into the future - and we want to champion that. Not all IT conferences really 'get it' and so there's only so many times you can hear the merits of 'Waterfall' or Kanban! What about new and improved approaches? What about fresh takes on old ideas? What about ideas that break the mould? We then have 'Festival' and as I'm sure you know already, Edinburgh is renowned across the globe for its wonderful International and Fringe festivals in summer, the largest in the world ...and we love that about our city. What's more, that passion, enthusiasm and joy is how we feel about Business Analysis. So BA Life isn't just a conference, it's a festival in the truest sense of the word, celebrating the wonders and greatness of Business Analysis. And that's not all... BA Life is now a Limited Company and holds one-day workshops too.

Choices were made ...and changed! What can milk in the vodka aisle teach us about pivots? (Now there's a question you weren't expecting!😁) This week, we have a thought-provoking article on pivoting from our very own David Strachan, with a close-to-home example for BA Life, and even a little 'Friends' humour for a Friday. Enjoy, comment, like and share! - Thanks! 😀 #ba #businessanalysis #balife #balife2025

🌟 BA Tip of the Week – Business Analysis Techniques – User Stories🌟 🎯Purpose: The purpose of a user story is to clearly define a functionality/define a specific requirement from the end user’s perspective which is needed to deliver value 📚According to BABOK V3: User stories simply document a stakeholder's needs and the associated value in a concise and straightforward manner. They provide a foundation for identifying needs, prioritizing tasks, planning solutions, as a metric for measuring delivery of value, units for tracing related requirements and as units of project management and reporting. Generally, a user story is a brief statement describing the individual with the need, their intended goal, and the value it provides. Additional critical information that enhances the understanding of the story's scope can be included as supporting details. Focusing on stakeholder value, user stories promote further dialogue with stakeholders and group functional requirements for delivery. Approaches: 1️⃣ Title (this is optional) Describes an activity the stakeholder wants to carry out with the system 2️⃣ Statement of value: There is a commonly used format to define the statement of value which goes with ‘who’, ‘what’ and ‘why’ aspects of the functionality/activity/requirement "As a <who>, I need to <what>, so that <why>." 3️⃣ Conversation Usually a user story helps a team understand a feature and its value to the stakeholder. While the story outlines the need, additional details are developed as the story is worked on. 4️⃣ Acceptance criteria: A user story may be underpinned by detailed acceptance criteria, which define its boundaries and help the team understand what the solution must deliver to provide value to stakeholders. These criteria can be further supplemented with additional analysis models if necessary.Acceptance criteria are provided as statements that can be verified as true or false, typically through user acceptance testing (UAT) #iiba #IIBAColombo #IIBASriLanka #businessanalysis #srilanka #babok

As Kermit the Frog once said, "Life is made up of meetings and partings. That is the way of it and I am sure we will never forget..." Gavin Ross, who has decided to move on to new endeavours. BA Life is our passion, run in our spare time while keeping busy as 'working' Business Analysts. Having that full-time BA career gives us a unique perspective on the content of the BA Life conference, created and hosted by BAs for BAs. Making our amazing 'Festival in a Day' takes an incredible effort, including considerable time from dedicated people like Gavin, the remaining directors, and an army of amazing volunteers. Inevitably, there comes a time when it’s not possible to continue because other important things take priority, and that time has come for Gavin. He will always be remembered fondly for helping kickstart BA Life on its monumental journey, and for his hard work with Sponsors and Affiliates over the years. Thanks for all your efforts, Gavin, and enjoy the extra time you’ll now have for your many hobbies ...which are, of course, centred on great food and Whisky! 😋 Forever a BA Lifer! 💙💚

In the last year, what 3 things have you learned in your Business Analysis journey? - Well, here at BA Life, we keep finding wonderful BAs with something great to say, like Thando Jacobs and his three lessons from the last year (see below) ⬇ So what are yours? What have you discovered or learned about yourself, Business Analysis or related skills? 🤔🤓 Share your thoughts below and remember to check out Thando's brilliant podcast, Inside Business Analysis! 🎙 #ba #balearning #businessanalysis #balife

Passionate Business Analyst Consultant | Host of the Inside Business Analysis Podcast 🎙️

I started Inside Business Analysis this time last year 😳 I picked up the mic and started the podcast because: 🎙 I'm a student of the game and want to keep learning from others and hope that the listeners can learn with me too. 🎙 I switched careers to become a BA so I understand those who want to know how to get inside the world of business analysis. Hopefully, the discussions will help them on their journey. 🎙 A lot of interesting things happen inside the world of business analysis, and I want to help shine a light on them. Three things that I've learned in the past 12 months: 🔸 I've interviewed guests from 10 different countries so far. Despite living thousands of miles apart and working in different cultures and environments, we all share the same joys and pains of Business Analysis. 🔸 Focus on the value of business analysis. Multiple guests have shared this sentiment and expressed that business analysis is not about creating artefacts but helping organisations solve meaningful problems and embedding positive change. This is the ROI of business analysis. 🔸 The number one thing that will help you succeed as a Business Analyst is passion. A strong passion for the work we do, the value we bring and for the profession at large. I don't know what the next 12 months will look like but I'm excited for the road ahead 😆! If you'd like to stay connected and keep hearing inspiring stories about Business Analysis make sure to join the Insiders newsletter: https://lnkd.in/eYxF7F9k P.S. Shout out to Karen Newnham, she was the first person to say yes to come on the podcast and kickstart this journey 😄

‼ NEWSFLASH ‼ - Business Analysts are not normal! 😯 BA Life Superfriend, Hannah Pearson-Coats has revealed all in a shocking exposé of BA communication. ...As the Business Analysis world reels in horror at the discovery that they babble incomprehensibly in a dark and arcane language, the rest of the world sighs, "Well, duh!" 😂 #ba #balife #businessanalysis #businessanalyst

🔥 Consulting Business Analyst: Helping you to Analyse → Connect → And get stuff done!

TL;DR: Please tell me what you think are the best (or worst) idioms business analysts use regularly? 🥺💬 And here's the (personal) backstory to the question ... 👇 I'm now getting better at identifying precisely when my partner has stopped listening to me when I'm talking about some business analysis thing. It has practically become a game. I win if I identify it as soon as it happens. My partner wins when manages to hide it. He's got better at maintaining eye contact and I've got better at spotting when they've glazed over. 👀 To be fair, I can go on and on (and on). 😅 The other day, during an (admittedly long-winded) description of something, he remarked "you do know that this is EXTREMELY boring." And when I protested, he clarified that he wasn't telling me to stop explaining, he just thought that it was important that I knew!!! 💀 This managed to halt my (allegedly boring) recount because I had completely lost my place by the time we had stopped laughing. 🤭😂🤣 But the exchange also got me thinking about the words we use. 💬 Specifically all the words we business analysts use that are complicated, pretentious, or just plain obscure. I think Robert Snyder calls it "verb sprawl." The sprawl part is spot on! We use a ton of words and phrases in very particular ways. They all have distinct meaning and connotations like it is our own little BA language. And I'm interested in exploring it, maybe via another series of posts ... Which is why I want to know \what words or phrases you use or hear that you think are good examples of our BA language. I want both good words and phrases that we should keep using, and unhelpful words or phrases that are contributing to the sprawl! Or put another way: I want both idioms and idiotics! Now I know I'll probably just end up with business words but I'm not sure it matters – I think there's a BA take in there somewhere still. Please help me with your examples!👇 #BusinessAnalysis #Idioms Please note: Am potentially butchering Robert's Verb Sprawl concept!! But I thought Sprawl was such a good descriptor and I couldn't steal it without credit!

"It's elementary, my dear BA!" 🕵♂️ 🔍 Before we reshare another great article from the Brazilian BA and BA Life superfriend, Fabricio Laguna, here's a fun fact for you: The phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson" was NEVER said in any Sherlock Holmes story! 😲 It's funny how things get mixed up and then just accepted ...a point that Fabricio makes in his article when comparing a 'job' to a 'role'. As our very own Julia Newell will attest, this article is a must-read for anyone, who like her, is a BA working as a Product Owner. What do you think of the distinction Fabricio makes? How do you consider yourself? For more from Fabricio, you can enjoy another of his articles here: https://lnkd.in/exM44K6N #balife #balife2024 #businessanalysis #ba #businessanalyst

Do you know the difference between a Professional Business Analyst and a Business Analysis Professional? 🤔 In this article, I use a detective metaphor 🕵♂️ to distinguish #role and #job concepts. That may help you to communicate what you do and the skills you use to do it. 😉 Key idea: "Every professional should be a business analysis professional." Now THIS is a great discussion! ...in the words of one of the most enthusiastic Business Analysts we know, James Dean, "What are the perfect requirements?" As James says, there's no such thing as perfection ...however, given requirements are 'bread and butter' for any BA, what would make the tastiest wholegrain organic bread with lashings of creamy sumptuous butter? 🍞😋 Perhaps, it's all about getting the most out of your stakeholders (see last week's discussion (https://lnkd.in/ecXPdCdt) from Iurii Gomon, and the referenced article from Kathy Berkidge). Then again, maybe you would want to look at non-functional requirements, just like Kevin Campbell did at this year's conference. So what do you think? Can we get close to perfection? 🤔 #balife #balife2024 #businessanalysis #ba #businessanalyst

What are perfect requirements? Unfortunately, they don't exist 😁. That's right, there's no such thing as perfect requirements 🫨. What does exist? 🙌🏻 Drawing out the right information from the right people 🙌🏻 Working with the right business people to define what's needed (goals, expectations, success criteria, priorities, risks, assumptions, dependencies) 🙌🏻 Collaborating with the right technical people to brainstorm solutions to meet customer and/or user goals, expectations, and needs 🙌🏻 Using the right techniques to model the right information 🙌🏻 Clarifying ambiguity 🙌🏻 Communicating information clearly and simply Requirements are a team effort 👌🏻. #requirements #collaboration #communication #businessanalysis #analysis #techniques #simplicity #community #engagement

🗨 So, Stakeholder... Come in, sit down, tell me about yourself! 💬 Yes, we're talking Stakeholder Interviews with BA Life superfriend, Iurii Gomon, The Passionate BA! In this helpful video, he looks at what it takes to run a successful interview from preparation, to conducting the interview, to the all-important confirmation of what they said. He also looks at the relevance of BOTH open and closed questions (yes, closed questions have their uses too!) - and the value of using the interview process as an opportunity to develop genuine rapport with your stakeholders (no Spanish Inquisition here! 😂) If you enjoy this video, remember to check out our Mindful Stakeholder Engagement article with the wonderful Kathy Berkidge at https://lnkd.in/ehR-HJNZ And what about you?
