The strength of a co-operative is based on collaboration and working together to harness our collective strength. Our members really value the opportunity to visit other members farms. Yesterday BGG and Driscolls hosted a special raspberry day at Kelsey Farms. We had a record breaking number of BGG growers, Driscoll's and associated key raspberry specialists attended with over 100 partcipants. Fantastic group discussions and learnings. We’re betting this is the first time that spotted wing drosophila have been invited to No. 10 Downing Street... Why? Resilience, innovation, sustainability – some of the big themes of Rishi Sunak’s second #FarmtoFork summit – all feature in BigSis founder Glen Slade’s chemical-free Insect Control as a Service (ICaaS) solution. The tube contains sterilised male insects. When released into a #softfruit crop such as raspberries or blackberries, they mate with wild females to prevent any population increase of the damaging spotted wing drosophila (SWD). It’s dramatically effective, with control rates over 90%. A prime example of British #agtech at its best, BigSis has used #AI and #robotics to build the world’s only automated insect production facility where every insect is reared individually. At full capacity, this will provide the millions of insects required to effect season-long control of a problematic insect pest – without using any insecticides. Very grateful to Berry Gardens Growers Ltd and Clockhouse Farm for all their support in developing, trialling and being early commercial users of our technology – and for their invitation to support them at No. 10 today. Berry Garden Growers were delighted to be invited to 10 Downing Street today where we got to meet the Prime Minister. He loved the Driscoll's Victoria blackberries! We explained to Rishi the importance of Producer Organisations and how we foster new start ups and innovation. We introduced him to Glen Slade from BigSis who are working with our growers. The Government announced today a new £80m 'Horticulture Resilience & Growth' programme which recognises the Producer Organisation model. Good news!!
