About us
Blackfriars Settlement is a registered charity based in London SE1 for over 125 years that aims to create and provide community services and support. Whether you want to learn new skills or to have fun and make friends, we have something to suit you. All of our work is guided by five aims: - Supporting the achievement of individual aspirations - Promoting physical and mental well-being and independence for all - Promoting learning and development - formal and informal - Promoting digital inclusion - Being a focal point in the community In 2018, Blackfriars Settlement merged with The Mary Ward Settlement (comprising Mary Ward Centre (MWC) offering adult education, and Mary Ward Legal Centre (MWLC) offering free legal advice). The Mary Ward Settlement Group (MWSG) is made up of the three charities which are all individually constituted but governed by an integrated board.

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting a wonderful team from NatWest Group for a kitchen takeover at Blackfriars Settlement! Our friends from NatWest cooked up a storm, preparing delicious cottage pie and veggie curry for the 41 members who joined us. Following the meal, they shared valuable insights about local branch banking and online banking, helping our community stay informed and connected. A huge thank you to the NatWest team for their generosity and support. Our members truly appreciated your support and dedication to enhancing our community's knowledge and well-being. Yesterday, Blackfriars Settlement collaborated with artists Jacqueline Williams and Teekall Mair-Macfarlane for an enriching art workshop ✨ Alongside our attendees, members of the IVY studios team and the Elephant and Castle town centre team, Jacqueline Williams, a talented teacher, artist, and textile designer, shared her expertise and passion with participants. With a focus on community engagement and storytelling, participants explored various artistic techniques. Using materials like coloured tissue paper, paint sticks, and markers, they brought their cultural stories to life. Some of this artworks will be used to decorate public amenities, celebrating the diverse cultural fabric of Elephant & Castle. A huge thank you to the Elephant and Castle Community Fund and everyone involved for making this event possible and fostering creativity in our community! #volunteersweek #BlackfriarsSettlement #ElephantandCastleCommunityHub #ChangingLives #PositiveAgeing #AgeingWellSouthwark #Inspringelephantcommunityfund

Celebrating Jenny Adams' remarkable artistry! At 92 years young, Jenny's creative spirit continues to shine brightly as she returns to her passion for painting after recovering from a fall. Now, her beautiful artworks adorn the hoardings of the Edward Edwards House redevelopment, bringing a burst of colour and inspiration to Blackfriars. Each brushstroke tells a story of resilience, perseverance, and the enduring beauty found in everyday moments. Enlarged from her sketchbooks, Jenny's drawings capture the intricate details of our surroundings – from the delicate petals of flowers to the subtle hues of decaying fruit. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Southwark Charities, JTRE London , and our supporters for their invaluable contributions to this project. Here's to the beauty of continuing inspiration and meaningful collaboration. Discover Jenny's artwork at the junction of Blackfriars Road and Nicholson Street, SE1. Snap a photo and share it with us on social media!

Thank you Guild of Fine Foods for your continued support of Blackfriars Settlement. The Positive Ageing service cooks three hot meals each week and we use food from the Guild to keep our costs down, and help to meet need. And our members love that they get to try food they wouldn't otherwise. Thank you - it makes a difference.
⭐ GREAT TASTE FAQ #6 ⭐ We’ve asked our team to help answer some of our most frequently asked questions about the Great Taste awards. In this video, Guild of Fine Food Operations and Events Coordinator Zara Williams answers the question 'What happens to the leftover products?' Here at Great Taste, we're committed to reducing food waste and any unused and unopened jars, bottles and packets go to our charity partners, Blackfriars Settlement in London and The Vale Pantry in Dorset, to be distributed to local families in the community. Last year, we also teamed up with Hive Mind Mead & Brew Co., who collected all the leftover jars of honey from Great Taste to create a unique, limited edition mead called 'Friends in Mead', with all profits going to support the charity Bees Abroad. The mead is available to buy from Hive Mind's website: https://lnkd.in/eqea-qN9 #greattasteawards #guildoffinefood #greattaste2024 #food #foodawards #blindtasted #foodwaste #foodwastereduction #lovefoodhatewaste

Blackfriars Settlement reposted this
Moved by the amazing work with senior citizens by Blackfriars Settlement when they called us in for an urgent EPC survey last Friday. They are a truly inclusive hub empowering their local community - I usually post pretty pictures of the exteriors of my client's buildings but here, more than anywhere - it's whats going on inside that counts.
