🦈 Happy Shark Awareness Day!  Sharks help keep our oceans healthy.    At the top of the food chain, sharks are critical for balancing the health of our marine environment and ocean. They help remove weak and sick fish, which helps keep the ecosystem in balance.  Sharks are among the most endangered of all marine species globally. It is estimated that since 1970, oceanic shark and ray populations worldwide have declined by 71% and one third of all shark species are now threatened by extinction. ❌    Sharks help boost the economy, balance the ecosystem and maintain the health of our oceans.  Find out how they support people 👇 #SharkAwarenessDay #Sharks #elasmobranch

Fresh off the press! 🙌 In this edition, we welcome a new government, which we expect will take decisive action in key areas, such as banning bottom trawling in marine protected areas, ending overfishing and committing to reform social inequality in UK fishing.

🗳️Today the UK has a new government; one that will likely lead the country to achieving its international commitments to protecting at least 30 % of the UK’s land and seas by 2030.    These promises now become its responsibility.     Some progress has been made towards meeting this target in UK seas, but the there is still some way to go.     Bottom trawling is still allowed in 31 out of 34 domestic offshore marine protected areas, fishing catch limits still exceed scientific advice by over 50%, and over two thirds of the UK’s fishing quotas are controlled by just 25 companies. ❌    We are asking for the new Labour government to commit to THREE ocean priorities:     1️⃣ To ban bottom trawling in ALL UK marine protected areas   2️⃣ To keeping fishing quotas in line with scientific advice   3️⃣ To commit to reforming social inequality in UK fishing    Join us in calling on the new Labour government to commit to these priorities for our ocean.  ✊   Aisling McGarrigle, Jo Coumbe #OceanAction #ClimateAction #EndOverfishing #NewGovernment #Election2024 #GeneralElection

🪸NEWS: Forests of rare red hydrocorals discovered in Chile's Patagonian sea Scientists exploring the remote waters of Chile’s Kawesqar National Marine Reserve have made an incredible discovery that sheds new light on Patagonia’s little-understood marine ecosystems. These slow-growing and highly sensitive corals are ecosystem engineers, which need protection from industrial salmon farming and pollution. Over recent centuries, we have lost huge amounts of habitats; including up to 50 per cent of seagrass meadows, 85 per cent of saltmarsh habitats and 95 per cent of native oyster reefs. 🌊 To combat this, we must actively restore these marine ecosystems to their former abundance.🌱 Marine licensing is crucial to permitting activity on the seabed, such as planting seagrass or restoring oyster reefs, whilst protecting the environment and human health.
