A science-based target is: ❌ not about what you think you can achieve ✅ but what the science says you need to achieve. The Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C. Scientists agree that warming beyond this level is likely to have catastrophic impacts. 🎯 A science-based target quantifies the GHG emissions reductions that your company needs to achieve to align with this goal. It should cover all emissions that a company is responsible for: 1️⃣ Scope 1 emissions come from sources you directly control (e.g. from burning fuel in your factories and vehicles). 2️⃣ Scope 2 covers the emissions produced in generating the energy you purchase (in most cases, this means your electricity use). 3️⃣ Scope 3 addresses indirect emissions linked to the company’s value chain. This covers a wide range of upstream and downstream activities, from the production of the goods and services you buy, to employee commuting and waste management. 🎯How can my company set science-based targets? We've launched the ClimateCane Tracker, a tool designed to enable sugarcane farms and mills, and companies that source from them, to set targets and a clear pathway for reducing your emissions in line with science. About us
Bonsucro is the leading global sustainability platform and standard for sugarcane, one of the world’s most important crops. Our purpose is to collectively accelerate the sustainable production and uses of sugarcane. We convene over 300 members from more than 50 countries to address critical challenges in the sugarcane sector and drive both performance and impact through our system of sustainability standards. We work across all sugarcane products and derivatives – sugar, ethanol, molasses, and bagasse in traditional and newer market sectors, from sugar and alcohol to biofuels and bioplastics.

Through Bonsucro certification, smallholder farmers learn how to: 🌱 improve their production methods 💧 better manage the water and fertiliser they use 💭 gain knowledge of human rights issues. The certification process also helps to build stronger relationships between farmers and mills. But our work with smallholders goes beyond certification: global and national partnerships, technologies, impact projects... Because contexts across the world vary, there's no one-size-fits-all approach. We are working closely with smallholders and others in the sector to develop tailored solutions. We strongly believe that joining forces is how we can create more inclusive and sustainable supply chains. Taking sustainability to the global event for bioenergy 🌎 Last week our South America Coordinator Marília Ferreira presented the importance of Bonsucro certification for innovative sugarcane derivatives at Fenasucro & Agrocana. She talked about: - the diverse sugarcane derivatives - our certification standards and how they work - the benefits of being certified - examples of companies that source certified materials - green finance opportunities, such as grants from the Bonsucro Impact Fund As sugarcane is increasingly decarbonising a wide array of sectors and products, like packaging, textiles, cosmetics, energy and more, Bonsucro is here to support producers in implementing sustainable practices and to help buyers source certified materials. It was great to meet and chat with so many people from those sectors. Thanks to everyone who visited our stand and who joined Marilia's presentation! If you'd like to follow up and discuss how to take this forward, our team is here to help. 💬 #Fenasucro #FenasucroAgrocana #Agrocana #Sugarcane #Bioenergy #Biofuels #Sugar #Ethanol #ResponsibleSourcing

🌏 The Thai sugarcane sector heavily relies on migrant workers from Cambodia and Myanmar, as well as on Thai seasonal workers. Ensuring decent work and quality of life requires responsible recruitment processes and worker voice tools, like grievance mechanisms. That is a shared responsibility across the sector. To take this forward, the IOM - UN Migration and the Office of The Cane and Sugar Board, with support from the Bonsucro Impact Fund, hosted a roundtable event. 💬The roundtable brought together key stakeholders such as government representatives, businesses and civil society organisations to: - develop actionable recommendations for policy and business practices - explore how to turn challenges related to climate change and labour conditions into opportunities for meaningful, positive change - deepen government officials and employers' understanding of labour migration processes. Sugarcane was highlighted as a nature-based solution that supports both economic growth and environmental stewardship. This approach not only benefited Thailand but also served as an inspiring, scalable model for agriculture in across ASEAN countries. ➡️ Bonsucro standards can play a key role in helping Thailand’s sugarcane industry create better and safer working conditions, reduce environmental impacts and enhance long-term sustainability. We stand ready to support Thai sugarcane producers in this journey. Exploring the Bonsucro Production Standard (BPS) with Latin American members 🔍🌎 In our 2nd session with our Good Practices Group, we covered indicator 5.3.1 of the BPS v5.2, which requires farms and mills to provide vocational and/or occupational skills training to its workers. This indicator means: - Providing an average of 16 hours of training per year to all workers (or pro rata for part-time workers). Training days include training delivered to basic workers, intermediate management and upper management. - Having a training plan prepared ahead of each harvest or cutting cycle. It was the opportunity for our members to share their own experiences and challenges in implementing the standard. Thank you to everyone who joined us! The next session is yet to be scheduled; if you're interested in joining future sessions please get in touch with Ruth Ascencio (Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean) or Marília Ferreira (South America). #bonsucro #SustainableSugarcane #Sugarcane #CanaDeAçúcar #CañDeAzúcar
