Today I'm off to the wonderful city of #Lisbon in #Portugal to attend the XVIII European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. Thank you to the SPG Sociedade Portuguesa de Geotecnia and their President, Professor Alexandre Pinto for organising what will I'm sure be an amazing event. I'm really looking forward to catching up with friends and colleagues from around the globe. I'm particularly excited about the Workshop organised by ISSMGE TC220 Field Monitoring in Geomechanics and TC206 (Observational Method) on Sunday 25th August. I think this is possibly the first time that the important subject of field monitoring has been independently recognised through inclusion in a major geotechnical conference in this way, so thank you to all of those that have given their time to support it! I'm also honoured to have been invited to be the Discussion Leader for session D10 (excavations, tunnelling and monitoring) in room Paleocene on Wednesday (16.15-18.30). In our roles as Chair and Vice Chair of the British Geotechnical Association, Chaido (Yuli) Doulala-Rigby CEng FICE and I will be present at the fourth National Assembly of European ISSMGE representatives on Tuesday evening to cast our vote for the next host of this magnificent tradition. The role of vegetation in performing these engineering functions becomes more important in a changing climate where sustainability and resilience are required from the traditional geotechnical engineering solutions. The aim of this talk will be to introduce and critically review the most common nature-based solutions (NbS) that can be used for slope stability and erosion protection. Additionally, this talk will cover the inclusion of design with vegetation across the project lifetime, with a focus on risk assessment, detailed design calculations, and monitoring of the NbS. Experiences from several projects that incorporated living materials within the traditional geotechnical design will be presented together with lessons learned and recommendations for the future.
