We published our 2024 Antibiotic Stewardship Report today, just days after an inaccurate comment was made in the news about what we do (or, more accurately, what we do not do) in UK poultry meat production. Honest and transparent discussion is at the heart of continual progress, so no doubt you will understand why we were disappointed to hear claims insinuating that the poultry meat industry uses growth hormones. This is categorically false. While we are grateful for both the correction that was made and the apology that was issued, we thought it only right that we put the voice of the industry at the forefront of this conversation, taking the time to celebrate what we do well. It seems that both the good weather and Parliament have returned! We even managed to get a bit of sun in time for yesterday's FDF's Summer Reception, where our new Minister of State, Daniel Zeichner, assured his buzzing crowd: "Our government is ready to partner with you." There are no easy fixes to be had. The challenges are significant, but so is the potential. We look forward to helping Minister Zeichner fulfil his commitments to "reduce burden and foster a pro-business climate" - and if "Government is ready to partner with" us, then we, by all means, are ready too! Delighted to meet the new agri-food trade attachés yesterday at a networking event organised by the NFU (National Farmers' Union) and talk about the opportunities for our poultry meat and poultry breeding stock exports. We wish them well in their new posts.

Drop in poultry meat exports since 2020 underscores the erosion of British poultry meat supply chains due to Brexit, new data from HMRC shows. “No one wants the burdens wrapped up in additional checks...but we have to level the burden to level the playing field," says BPC Chief Executive Richard Griffiths. “Only then can we go on to address the inefficiencies in UK-EU trade - facilitated by an SPS Agreement." The British Poultry Council believes the cost of not having reciprocated checks is greater than the burdens that come with them – particularly in the absence of a Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement, in which these very burdens could be addressed, equalised, and potentially eliminated. What is behind stewardship success? Healthy birds are our most viable asset, so their welfare is prioritised as such. Our drive for excellence is underpinned by the responsible use of antibiotics and safeguarding their efficacy. Suggesting we do anything but undermines our farmers, producers, and the decades of investment and innovation that define British poultry meat.

In pursuit of fairness in the supply chain - which involves the equitable distribution of opportunity, resource, and benefit - we have to define what we value as an industry feeding the nation. Poultry is half the meat the nation eats. It plays a vital role in setting out a vision for a system that feeds people, tackles inequalities with quality and affordable food, and promotes a liveable climate for all. "Artificially" low prices, as reported in @The Grocer, are symbolic of a far greater problem, and a conversation that is long overdue. This is our take.
