  • 📈 Demonstrating the local impact of private capital   Last Friday, the MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West, Chi Onwurah, visited two local businesses in her constituency backed by BVCA members, to see the local value and impact of private capital investments in the area.   🕺💃First, Chi visited Dance City, the North East’s leading operator of a purpose-built dance studio, supporting a thriving dance ecology in the region, as a place where professional and aspiring dancers meet, learn and train.   🔊 Commenting on the visit, Chi said: “It was great to visit Dance City in the heart of Newcastle. Dance is a brilliant way to express creativity, keep fit, and most importantly have fun. They have fantastic studios, a lovely theatre, do valuable work in the community – including their café, co-created with refugees – and make a big economic contribution. It was interesting to hear how Northstar Ventures UK’ investment was supporting the company on its journey, alongside the funding received from Arts Council England.”   ⚗Following this, Chi visited Iksuda Therapeutics, a clinical-stage ADC (antibody-drug conjugates) drug development company with presence in both the UK and the US, founded in 2007 by a co-investment agreement between the University of Bath and the Life Science Investment team at BVCA member IP Group plc.    🔊 On the visit to Iksuda Therapeutics, Chi said: “It was fantastic to return to The Biosphere at the Newcastle Helix to meet the team at Iksuda and hear about their progress. They are one of the many brilliant companies making up our thriving life sciences sector here in the North East. With the support of IP Group, who jointly founded the company with the University of Bath, Iksuda have a bright future here in Newcastle working on new treatments that will save lives.”   The BVCA is continuing to facilitate visits by MPs to local businesses backed by members of the #privateequity and #venturecapital industry, helping bring the impact of the industry to life. To find out more about the BVCA’s ongoing MP Connect programme, or you have a portfolio company that would welcome a visit, please contact the BVCA’s Public Affairs team at [email protected].   #regionalinvestment #partnersforgrowth

  • 🚨 Private equity industry to consult on refreshing world-leading transparency and disclosure guidelines   Today marks the launch of the Private Equity Reporting Group (PERG) and BVCA’s consultation to refresh the Walker Guidelines for transparency and disclosure in private equity.   Unique to the UK, the Walker Guidelines demonstrate the private equity industry’s commitment to transparency. The refresh to the Walker Guidelines is designed to ensure relevant disclosures are in place as the #privateequity industry continues to grow both in scale and importance to the UK economy, with over £20bn invested in UK portfolio companies in 2023.   The consultation aims to achieve the following: ✔️ Review both the scope and requirements of the Walker Guidelines to ensure that original objectives are still being achieved - since its last refresh in 2022. 🎯 Introduce refreshed reporting requirements that continue to be comparable to those of the #FTSE250.   PERG and the BVCA are inviting comments from interested parties on options for updating the Guidelines. Consultation will run until 30th September and final amendments to the guidelines will be published alongside the annual reports in January 2025.   Learn more about the consultation here - https://lnkd.in/g3QPd2sy

  • The cornerstone of the UK’s competitiveness as a business and #investment destination lies in its talent pool, and the BVCA has been calling for the new Government to cultivate and upskill this, to ensure businesses across sectors have access to the talent they need to grow. The BVCA’s own Manifesto for Growth outlines how the Government, and the new Skills England, can support and encourage a UK workforce for growth, notably: 💡 Identifying and addressing skills gaps while promoting education in STEM, data science, technology and entrepreneurship. 📚 More support for businesses to provide lifelong learning and training to employees. 👨🎓 Reforming the Apprenticeship Levy to fund training programmes like skills bootcamps. And so we welcome today’s launch of the new national institution Skills England, which will combine and devolve adult education budgets and replace the Apprenticeship Levy with a growth and skills levy. These measures will help to simplify and improve the skills system, ensuring the supply of skills needed to break down barriers to opportunity and drive economic growth.
