At the end of last year, we introduced volunteering days. Do you want to know what we've been doing? All team members can have two paid days off to help external parties with projects that support our communities. This is one way for us to give a little back to the areas where we live and work. ➟ 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 🪻🥀 A small group of us volunteered to help Cambridge City Council with a green project. We spent the day planting bedding around the trees on Parker's Piece. This is a large green space area within the city centre. Around the edge of Parker's Piece are a number of large lime trees, which were planted in 1868. As part of a conservation plan, there is a row of smaller trees inside these, which you can see in the photos. ➟ 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 🙋♀️❓ Several of us have helped with science-related projects in schools around Cambridge. ↳ We helped with a school trip to the Whipple Museum. ↳ We answered some challenging DNA-related questions from primary school children. Can you make hybrid monsters by mixing DNA? And kudos to James A. for a Lego-based school demo of what Camena Bioscience does, including enzymes and Addamers.

Our Echo liquid handler doesn't have a name. 😢 Echo liquid handlers (made by Beckman Coulter Life Sciences) use ultrasonic acoustic energy to transfer nano litre amounts of liquids from one sample to another. We use this to miniaturise our DNA synthesis reactions. More tools = more fire 🔥. Here is one of our new toys - The Firefly from SPT Labtech. When making genes, we're usually moving colourless liquids around. DNA from two wells is mixed with enzymes in another, making a longer piece of DNA. On the surface that isn't very exciting, but you do get to play with cool liquid-handling robots like this one. They remove human errors and increase the number of genes we can make every week. What's happening in this clip? ↳ Pipette tips are picked up. ↳ Samples (microlitres) are taken from 96-well plates at the back. ↳ They're transferred to a 384-well plate. ↳ A dispenser adds water to all of those samples. And the lights at the end are, well, just a nice touch. 💚 --- This is what cutting-edge DNA synthesis looks like.
