Moisture is a leading cause of failures in #transformers. Many transformers have oil expansion/protection systems to accommodate oil thermal expansion and prevent moisture ingress from the ambient air. However, should these fail, the consequences can be severe. With transformer monitoring you can be alerted to the presence of moisture in oil, allowing you to take immediate #action and safeguard against the impact of failure. Read below a post from our expert Anatoliy Mudryk detailing the impact of moisture in oil.
The transformer conservator can be a source of free water in the transformer. Moisture is a well-known enemy of power transformers leading to instant failures and to materials accelerated aging and degradation. A "free-breathing" transformer oil expansion system allows humid air to enter the space above the transformer oil without any barriers. The term "free-breathing" also often refers to transformers equipped with a desiccant breather, which removes most of the humidity from the incoming air. A "bladder" serves as an additional moisture barrier inside the conservator, physically separating the oil from the air. This is implemented as a membrane or airbag. Using a bladder together with a desiccant breather is the most effective method, providing two stages of protection against air moisture. The type of oil expansion/protection system is determined by the transformer's specifications, based on the utility's assessment of its importance versus maintenance needs. All the listed options (except pure free-breathing) prevent humid air intake into the conservator only if properly maintained and functioning correctly. However, imagine a scenario where these systems fail or are not maintained properly. The consequences would be: 1) Moisture will dissolve in the oil, following the rule of equal relative humidities of liquid and gaseous media. For instance, if the air has 80% humidity, the oil will eventually reach 80% relative humidity. This process is responsible for transformers becoming wet over time 2) Humidity from the air will condense on the conservator tank walls during colder times of the day, similar to condensation on a bathroom mirror. Some of this condensed water may enter the oil as free water, leading to internal rusting of the conservator. This free water can cause transformer failures, particularly in areas directly below where the conservator pipe connects to the top of the tank. This second scenario of this post could be among the reasons for the recently discussed series of failures. https://lnkd.in/dz5EmmRD

🔧 Transformer Monitoring Upgrade! 🔧 #TeamCamlin French field service #experts recently visited a leading #utility customer in the southwest of France to enhance the #reliability and #safety of their 600MVA #transformer. While this transformer was already equipped with #DGA monitoring from TOTUS, after experiencing bushing failures the customer understood the high risk associated when these components fail. This prompted them to enhance their monitoring with the addition of advanced #bushing and #partialdischarge (PD) monitoring. This upgrade will significantly enhance the reliability and efficiency of the transformer, ensuring peace of mind for our valued customer. #FieldService #Utility #TransformerMonitoring #Innovation #TeamWork #France #EngineeringExcellence

Partial Discharges (PD) occur due to defects in the electrical insulation. With the increasing intensity of PD, the transformer becomes more susceptible to arcing and discharges. This has the potential to cause catastrophic failure including fire, tank rupture, and potentially explosion. With TOTUS from Camlin Energy, we can detect and analyze PD events occurring in the transformer. Early detection of PD can significantly improve risk diagnosis, identifying developing defects and enabling corrective actions before failure. Aging components are a key factor that will impact the service life of your #transformer. Together with water and temperature, Oxygen (o2) is one of the three key elements responsible for accelerating the aging of your transformer. Awareness of increasing o2 levels enables a proactive #maintenance strategy to help minimize insulation degradation and transformer aging. Stay ahead of transformer degradation and extend the life of your assets with real-time #insights from Camlin Energy's #TOTUS Transformer Monitor.
