Excited to be part of an exhibit at Jodrell Bank on The Cancer Code this weekend! Looking forward to sharing insights on liquid biopsies and cancer of unknown primaries during a presentation with Victoria this Sunday. It's a privilege to contribute to the discussion on cutting-edge cancer research in such an inspiring setting!

🎉 The Visualisation, Irradiation and Analysis Core Facility, headed by Steve Bagley, have just achieved Silver Level in the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) this week! The drive to improve sustainability in research across the Institute is part of a wider focus on sustainability from Cancer Research UK (CRUK) which includes the objective of reducing direct and indirect carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 from the 2022/23 baseline, and the "Our Sustainable Future" strategy at The University of Manchester.

The whole team of are working hard to get all the exhibits ready. Last month I attended the 17th International PhD Student Cancer Conference (IPSCC) in Berlin, where I had an amazing time meeting so many fellow students from around the world. Pleased to be publishing today my evidence paper looking at how the changes to the UK immigration system is impacting the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Institutes. The last UK Government introduced cost increases and barriers that made it harder to come to the UK. International talent is vital, but there is limited evidence on how the system impacts recruitment in UK research. So, we set out to understand how this is affecting our research community. We’ve found that all our Institutes are struggling to attract and recruit international researchers, despite being some of the best places to do cancer research in the world. Our modelling shows the cost rises will increase Institute immigration costs by 44% to nearly £700k a year – this is putting off talent and taking money away from beating cancer sooner. The new UK Government has set out their missions to kick-start sustainable growth and improve the nation’s health – and acknowledged that life science is central to these ambitions.  We are calling on the new Government to reverse the recent visa fee increases and initiate a full-scale review of the impact of the immigration system on the country’s ability to recruit international researchers.
