** Contacting Careers in Arbitration ** Please note that we are operating a limited response policy at present. - Media Support for Events Careers in Arbitration regularly supports and promotes events and initiatives taking place in the arbitration community. Most of the events that we support are NOT career-focused events - after all, a significant number of those following this feed are already well-established in the field. We aim to offer something for everyone! If you would like Careers in Arbitration to consider providing media or logo support for your forthcoming event, whether it is a webinar, seminar, pre-moot, new initiative, publication or something else entirely, please contact us by email to [email protected] and provide details of when and where the event is taking place, and who will be speaking/is involved. We do NOT routinely promote events that we are not asked to formally support as a logo supporter/media sponsor/supporting organization. Please share your request AT LEAST 14 days before your event/initiative launch is due to take place. We do not offer financial support or sponsorship in any circumstances. - Event Diversity Policy To be considered for support and promotion by Careers in Arbitration, speaker line ups MUST, as a minimum, be gender diverse. We strongly encourage event organizers to embrace ALL forms of #diversity when planning events and confirming speakers. Having difficulty finding diverse speakers? Drop us a line and we will share some suggestions. - Event Planning We are happy to work with our friends and colleagues across the globe to plan events that may be of interest to our followers. Do you or your organization want to plan an event with us? Please drop us a line, including details of proposed topics and speakers. We will be in touch. - Calls for Speakers and Authors We welcome the opportunity to share calls for papers for blogs and journals, and calls for abstracts from potential speakers. Please feel free to tag Careers in Arbitration when posting about publication and speaking opportunities. We will pick up and reshare as many as we can to help spread the word. - Requests for Assistance We are unable to assist individuals with their search for arbitration roles in any jurisdiction. We encourage you to conduct your own research in this regard. It is not possible to intern for or work at Careers in Arbitration. Instead, we encourage you to apply for roles shared on the feed for which you are a suitable candidate. - Communicating with Careers in Arbitration The only person who is authorized to speak on behalf of Careers in Arbitration and consider requests for media support and collaboration is our Founder, Amanda Lee. Please do not direct requests for support from Careers in Arbitration to third parties - we will not be able to assist if you do. Thank you for taking the time to read this announcement.

Some thoughts from Arbitrator Philippa Charles for trainee solicitors that are also likely to be useful to those starting internships or other junior roles in arbitration ... Our Founder remembers that pink tape 😊

View profile for Philippa Charles, graphic

    Arbitrator at Twenty Essex

Training contracts start around now (except for weirdos - like me - who had a March start date). Before my experience (both as trainee and supervisor) becomes about as relevant as a reel of pink tape for sewing affidavits - and if you know what that means you're too old to read this post - can I share some thoughts for the benefit of incoming trainees? I'll do a separate one for supervisors too. 1. You're still learning! You have a training contract because you've shown the potential to become a good solicitor, but nobody expects you to know it all on Day One (or even day one of a new seat). You not only can, but should, ask the questions to help you do the tasks you have been given. Two key questions: what do you need (an email, an oral answer, a 20-page memo)? and when do you need it? 2. Demonstrate enthusiasm for the work, and the role, you're in now. People will be looking for willingness to learn and develop. If you are present, pleasant, proactive and prompt, it will get noticed. 3. You will learn a huge amount by observing how more senior people do their jobs: sitting in on meetings and calls, internal discussions, or even the discussion around your own workload will give you insight into how a good lawyer gets through their tasklist (and not just by delegating it to you). How do they translate your 20-page research memo for the client? How do they deal with problems? How do they prepare for a meeting? How do they respond to a combative client or opponent? Role models are gold. 4. Time management is the key to pretty much everything, including a work-life balance. Those questions in point 1 will help you plan your workload to fit the needs of the jobs in hand. If something is taking more time than you expected, keep the work-giver in the loop so that you can reopen the discussion about what they are expecting you to do by the given deadline and how they are expecting you to do it. 5. Don't disappear! If you're going to be away from your desk (home or office) for more than about 15 minutes, let your supervisor know when you'll be back (this is also an opportunity to time-check the ongoing tasks). If you have a regular personal commitment you'd like to keep, make sure you have a conversation with your supervisor(s) about it and be clear about the circumstances in which you can, and when you cannot, make that commitment. Be considerate, and you should get consideration back. 6. Six months per seat is a moment in your working lifetime. Give it your best shot. Even if you hate the practice area. Or the team. I seriously considered giving up at one point (ok, a few points) but keeping going gets you to NQ, and NQ means new opportunities. Best of luck!

** 𝗔 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ** The Careers in Arbitration feed was established to try and make it a little bit easier for those across the globe wishing to enter this challenging field to do so. Thousands of hours of work have been devoted to running this feed over the last five years and building its global audience - three cheers for our fabulous 80,000+ followers! Finding vacancies, sharing events, highlighting publishing and speaking opportunities, and attempting to make life a little bit easier for those who are working hard to find their place in this field is a labor of love. This feed exists to help everyone who is kind enough to follow it and we are grateful to those who engage with it. Although it is a significant undertaking, we do not have a small army of employees. 𝗛𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. We appreciate that sometimes, for example, an incorrect 'employer' may be selected in error when filling out a LinkedIn profile. We try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but preserving the intregrity of this feed is important. After all, we want our followers to be able to trust the information that we share. 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆, 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻. Any post announcing employment by Careers in Arbitration will be reported to LinkedIn as containing "misinformation". The only exception to our reporting policy is students who have completed our online ADR Experience Program (although when adding information about your participation to your LinkedIn profile, please kindly remember to comply with Forage's policy on recording information about program completion. This program is not "Employment" - record such information accurately to avoid misleading anyone, including potential employers, particularly when recording the length of your experience). If you are not dealing with or speaking to our Founder, you are not dealing with someone who can speak on behalf of Careers in Arbitration. Thank you to all those who respect the work that goes into keeping this feed running smoothly.
