About us

Carney's Community gets disadvantaged and excluded young people off the street and away from a life of crime and despair by giving them skills, discipline and self respect. Our approach is unusual and particularly resource intensive but ultimately effective because we recognise that creating lasting change takes time, hard work and dedication. At Carney’s Community, a young person builds a trusting relationship with a single consistent person; this relationship lasts as long as the young person needs; and the mentoring is taken up by the young person when they want it and are motivated to make changes in their lives. Our work reduces offending, re-offending and anti-social behaviour, whilst improving social mobility and community cohesion. Consequently we improve the quality of life for the communities we serve. Carney’s Community is inspired by boxing legend Mick Carney who motivated and turned around many lives through engagement with boxing.

    Co-founder at Carney's Community

Last night I had the honour of speaking at the Carney’s Cup, which was held at the Old Bailey, to raise money for The Sheriffs' and Recorder's Fund. It was an amazing venue and an amazing evening, thanks to the hard work of Robert Howard , Nick Paterson-Jones, Mark Reigate, Nigel Travis and many more. I discussed the work that we do at Carney’s and in particular the prevalence of knife crime in our community. Sadly, less than 24 hours later, I was at the hospital bed of a young 15 year old we work with, who was stabbed at almost exactly the same time I was making my speech. He was stabbed whilst participating in football training, which highlights how real the risk is that is posed to young people living in our community. He is the second participant stabbed in the space of a month, but fortunately this time he survived the attack. He put his survival down to the defensive boxing moves he learned at Carney’s and the quick first aid administered by those he was playing football with.
