CFD Direct | Principles of CFD | New Course with OpenFOAM CFD Direct is pleased to announce 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗙𝗗 a new 4-day course available from September 2024. The course provides critical theoretical and practical knowledge of fluid dynamics, modelling, numerical methods and algorithms for modern CFD. It has been created by Chris Greenshields &Aidan Wimshurst, drawing on the experience of Chris’s 16 years of OpenFOAM training and Aidan’s Fluid Mechanics 101 channel on YouTube. We return to the classroom for this course, initially in Cologne, Germany (September) and Chicago, USA (October). Booking is now open. Our #CFD Training with #OpenFOAM aims to give participants the confidence to carry out CFD analysis, repeatedly, to a high standard in a timely manner. Our existing courses target the use and customisation of OpenFOAM teaching users how to do CFD with OpenFOAM. However, before hitting the keyboard, CFD users also need to decide what to do. Principles of CFD, as its name suggests, aims to provide some guiding principles to help them make decisions, supported by relevant knowledge of fluid dynamics (some, highly complex), numerical methods, algorithms, data processing, geometry/mesh generation and aspects of computer science. Slow progress, wasted effort, un-reproducible results, poor insight and low quality — and a resulting loss of confidence — are all consequences of lack of knowledge and poor decisions. The course teaches the subjects described above in a manner relevant to CFD, using canonical (study) cases, starting from the governing conservation equations in 3-dimensions. We demonstrate control volume analysis, compatible with the finite volume method in CFD, and highlight important empirical and analytical solutions to aid understanding and validate results. The course follows a series of exercises which includes the use of OpenFOAM's coded frameworks (code in input files) to perform quick calculations to prepare and monitor a simulation, and produce key results. In other words, we are teaching things CFD users can relate to their work, rather than things that are convenient for written examination in undergraduate courses.
