Research from The Food Foundation highlights the significant benefits of choosing plant-based meat alternatives over traditional meat products. The study found that all plant-based meat categories significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water footprints compared to meat. They also contain fewer calories, lower levels of saturated fat, and higher levels of fibre on average. The research analysed 68 plant-based and 36 meat products, including popular options like bacon, chicken nuggets, and meatballs. The study also found that processed plant-based meat alternatives are only marginally lower in protein relative to meat, despite public concerns about getting enough protein from plant-based diets. https://lnkd.in/daQxcq8S

JBS is the world’s largest meat company and is aiming to get even bigger to continue its climate-wrecking operations. In our most recent webinar, our expert panel discussed the growing opposition to its plan to list on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), giving it access to billions of dollars of more funding.  According to Changing Markets Foundation’s most recent report “The New Merchants of Doubt: How Big Meat and Dairy Avoid Climate Action,” JBS is only spending a paltry 0.03% ($20 Million) of its annual massive revenue (it made $69 Billion in 2022) on research and development for low carbon solutions. Today, the Financial Times published a fantastic expose on the global power of the Big Agricultural Lobby, including the findings from our latest report exposing how Big Meat and Dairy derail climate action with powerful lobbying tactics. Our report reveals that industry groups spend between €9.35mn and €11.54mn annually lobbying Brussels, ensuring that agricultural policies favour their interests over environmental sustainability. Nusa Urbancic, chief executive of the Changing Markets Foundation, says that as farming’s contribution to emissions has become clearer — livestock production is the largest source of human-caused methane emissions, for instance — the meat and dairy industries have managed to convince policymakers of “agricultural exceptionalism”. In our latest investigation, Changing Markets Foundation exposes a troubling shift within the FAO, once a leader in highlighting the environmental impact of livestock. In Environment+Energy Leader, our CEO Nusa Urbancic reveals how industry pressure has slowly but surely steered the FAO away from its bold stance in the 2006 Livestock’s Long Shadow report, which called for urgent change in the world’s livestock production model. Today, the FAO’s alignment with industry narratives, focusing on efficiency and techno-fixes over necessary dietary shifts and alternative proteins, is not only alarming but undermines global efforts to combat climate change. As the climate debate in food and farming becomes increasingly polarised, we call on the FAO to return to its roots of impartiality and scientific integrity.
