Today at Chartwells Independent, we are thrilled to be hosting our annual Whisk Festival at King Edward's Witley School.   This festival, timed to reconnect and inspire our colleagues as the new term starts, is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the passion, creativity and skills within our teams.   With engaging workshops, throughout the day, covering highly relevant topics such as Nutrition and Medical diets as well as Sustainable Strategies to NetZero 2030 and important Cost Controls - the culinary team will then serve up a sensational Spanish feast, a smorgasbord of salads and the latest in street food.    With new concepts being shared, an opportunity to be together as one team and the sharing of knowledge between everyone present, this year’s festival promises to be another huge success, another moment of pride for everyone at Chartwells Independent.   #CulinaryExcellence #LoveWhatYouDo #OurPeople #IndependentSchools

As the world preps for the start of the Paralympics next week, we continue our own stories of sporting successes, learnings and experiences through our #SummerOfSports. After introducing James Galloway BSC, MSc, SENR, Nutritionist at Rugby School, earlier this week, we spent some further time with him to understand the importance of hydration, especially in high-intensity sports. This knowledge has not only been gathered by James through his own education but also his personal experience as a successful competing powerlifter, as you can see below, enabling him to bring inspiration to the fantastic pupils he works with. Here are his expert tips on maintaining optimal hydration before, during and after exercise: Pre-Hydration: Start your workout well-hydrated by consuming 500-600 ml (17-20 oz) of water or a sports drink at least 2-3 hours beforehand. An extra 200-300 ml (7-10 oz) around 20-30 minutes before activity can further ensure proper hydration. Maintaining Hydration: For high-intensity activities exceeding 60 minutes, replenish fluids regularly to counter sweat loss. Aim for 150-350 ml (5-12 oz) every 15-20 minutes. Sports drinks are especially useful as they replace electrolytes and provide energy through carbs. Post-Exercise Rehydration: Replacing lost fluids and electrolytes post-exercise is key for recovery. Weigh yourself before and after exercise to assess fluid loss and consume 1.5 litres (50 oz) for every kilogram (2.2 lbs) lost. Opt for electrolyte-rich fluids like sports drinks or salt-fortified water for effective rehydration. (Note: this is based on body size and other factors, of course.) Along with food education, our nutritionists also positively impact our partner schools with their wider knowledge, helping to enhance their pupils performance and, in this case, reducing the risk of dehydration-related issues. #SummerOfSport #Chartwells #QualitySimpleDelicious

Our ongoing Nutritionist focus for our #SummerofSport campaign continues with James Galloway BSC, MSc, SENR, Chartwells Independent nutritionist at Rugby School – a world-renowned school with an enviable sporting heritage not least as the birthplace of the sport it lends its name too. With over 25 physical activity club options throughout the year and every day, James has a range of disciplines to consider when designing educational nutrition workshops and sharing his extensive food and nutrition knowledge with pupils. He loves to bring in his passion for powerlifting, and his winning experiences, to how he shares the positive impact of healthy eating on his training and performance. James is another shining example of how living a healthy and active lifestyle brings additional layers to his role as a nutritionist within his school. This week, we spoke with him to find out why he loves what he does and how he fuels himself for sporting events. Join us in celebrating the power of nutrition in sports and education. Together, we can help our students achieve their best both on and off the field. #SportsNutrition #StudentHealth #IndependentSchools #Chartwells #SummerOfSport

A shared personal experience can often prove to be a powerful and impactful learning tool.   Last summer, our nutritionist Grace Rawlings (ANutr) decided to challenge herself and signed up to compete in an Olympic triathlon to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.   For those of you who don’t know, an Olympic triathlon consists of a 1.5km Swim, 40km Cycle and 10km Run; it is quite the sporting event! Celebrating this #SummerofSport, we caught up with Grace to understand how she considered her food intake as a critical part of her triathlon preparation. Grace would be racing for over two hours, so she needed to consider two aspects of race nutrition: loading and fuelling of carbohydrates during the event. Here she shares her tips...   It is fantastic that we have such knowledgeable members of our nutrition teams working with our pupils to share these experiences, not only to encourage them to do the same but also to offer advice and support.   #SportsNutrition #StudentHealth #IndependentSchools #Chartwells #SummerOfSport

As our #SummerOfSport continues, we are asking our nutrition team why they love what they do and how sport plays a role in both their personal and professional lives. At Berkhamsted School, our nutritionist Grace Rawlings (ANutr) has been delivering a range of sessions, workshops and events over the school year to help educate children on the power of food, especially when it comes to fuelling our minds and bodies. From full school assemblies to seasonal lunch tastings and parent support sessions, Grace is involved in many parts of the school community and we are grateful for her dedication. Join us in celebrating the power of nutrition in sports and education. Together, we can help our students achieve their best both on and off the field. #SportsNutrition #StudentHealth #IndependentSchools #Chartwells #SummerOfSport

July was a month of thrilling sports, academic achievements and incredible food experiences for the team at Chartwells Independent, including celebrating the opening of The Refectory at Derby High School, Derby, UK, one of our fantastic independent school partners. It was an honour to be involved in the launch of this wonderful space which was opened by the esteemed DIPNA ANAND, chef, author and restaurant owner. July can be such a blur with our pupils heading back home for the summer break, so it was lovely to take a moment and enjoy this with everyone involved.    We wish all of our team wonderful holidays and a chance to refresh before the busy September term begins again.   #Chartwells #EndOfTerm #SportsNutrition #HealthyEating #IndependentSchools #SustainableFood #SummerOfSport
