To celebrate #HealthyEatingWeek, one of our leading nutritionists Olivia Haverson spoke to #BBCRadioSussex about how to engage children on healthy food. Whilst Olivia's confident delivering workshops to hundreds of children, this was very much a step outside her comfort zone, and we think she absolutely nailed it. Tackling climate change is a responsibility all businesses must face into. Everyone at Chartwells, led by our sustainability gurus Meg Longworth and Olivia Pratt (RNutr), with support from Carolyn Ball 🌍🍴💚, continually strive to be a force for good in the education sector. Together, we are committed to educating students and pupils, giving them the right tools to make informed decisions that are better for them, and our planet; while also showing best practice through food waste reduction programmes and evolving our menus to reduce carbon. Last night, these efforts were recognised at the Footprint Awards, where we took home the Sustainability in Education Award. Thanks to Charles Miers, Nick Fenwicke-Clennell, Amy Fetzer, Nick Hughes and the team for the sterling work you do driving the sustainable agenda in our sector. We are fired up to continue innovating and driving change, working collaboratively to reach net-zero emissions by 2030.

✅ -9.4% absolute reduction in emissions inclusive of 20% business growth (FY19 baseline – FY23, Scope 1,2,3) ✅ 25% reduction in carbon intensity; 🌎 162,828 tCO2e reduction in emissions attributed to purchases of food and drink. 🌎 1 in 4 recipes analysed now rated as “low carbon impact” (A and B rated) as part of a wider project to reduce the footprint of 214mn meals served annually. 🌎 185,000 meals donated to charities in past 12 months, contributing to a total of 1mn meals redistributed via FareShare UK since 2014. 🌎 31 tonnes of cling film saved - the equivalent of over 5,200 miles – it could stretch from the UK to USA. ✅ 2.2 million rows of data analysed in largest food and drink carbon impact assessment undertaken and disclosed to date. This week, Compass Group UK & Ireland published its Transition Plan - detailing what it takes to decarbonise its business, and drawing on the largest food and drink carbon impact assessment undertaken, and openly shared by any foodservice provider to date.   Being the first in our sector to share a detailed transition plan aligned to the UK government’s Final Disclosure Framework following its recent release by the Transition Plan Taskforce (TPT). The Framework is intended to help companies develop and deliver ‘gold standard’ climate transition plans.   Professor Sir Charles Godfray, Chief Climate and Sustainability Advisor, Compass UK&I said: “I am confident Compass’ approach and resolve will have a measurable, positive impact on the business, its clients, the foodservice sector, and the wider economy. Did you know that 94% of children in the Independent sector would like a healthy and balanced diet, but this number falls to 67% in the State sector?   The Chartwells 2024 Report, Fuelling Young Minds, explores the socio-economic barriers to children’s appetite for a healthy, balanced diet.
