➡️ The development of large steam-powered iron warships in the 1860s led to a large-scale expansion of the Dockyard around St Mary’s Island. The expansion involved the creation of three large basins and additional dry docks on land that was originally un-reclaimed marshland, which had to be drained and built up by eight feet. Convicts from the local prison were used as labourers for the construction, and by 1875, over 110 million bricks had been produced in the brickfields on the Island 🧱 The expansion on a greenfield site preserved the remarkable collection of 18th and 19th century industrial, administrative, and domestic buildings that now form The Historic Dockyard ⚓️ In other Royal Dockyards, original 18th-century structures were demolished to make way for new buildings required by the steam navy ⚓︎ #chathamhistory #chathammaritimetrust #stmarysisland #medwayhistory #chathamhistoricdockyard

Jo is a Fellow Chartered and Certified Accountant (FCCA), with over 20 years experience.  Her previous roles include Senior Small Business Manager for a medium sized accountancy practice and as a Divisional Finance Manager for a large insurance intermediary, helping to lead their finance change programme.   Jo is responsible for managing the Trust’s finance function and related professional services, such as banking and audit. Jo has two children who she enjoys taking to various clubs and days out for walks with their dog Waffle. MEET THE TRUSTEES 👋 Habib Tejan is a dedicated community leader and politician who has served as a Director at Chatham Maritime Trust and an elected member at Medway Council since 2015. He is a proven leader who has already made a significant impact during his time as a councillor, fighting for the needs of his constituents and delivering results. ➡️ In 1667, the Dutch fleet attacked Chatham, destroying much of the fleet at anchor and towing away the flagship Royal Charles ⬅️ The Raid on the Medway, during the Second Anglo-Dutch War in June 1667, was a highly successful Dutch naval attack on English warships at Chatham Dockyard and Gillingham in Kent. Despite the presence of Upnor Castle and the Gillingham Line for defense, Dutch forces led by Willem Joseph van Ghent and Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter bombarded Sheerness, advanced up the Thames to Gravesend, and entered the River Medway 🌊 They destroyed or captured several English ships, including the flagship HMS Royal Charles, which they towed away ship⚓︎ The raid was a political and military disaster for Charles II, hastening the end of the war and securing a favorable peace for the Dutch. St Mary’s Island is a great example of what can be achieved with a proper vision and good partnership working between Planners, Developers, Registered Providers, Architects, Funders, good management companies and a whole host of other stakeholders. ✅ 1,700 + homes ✅ School ✅ GP Surgery ✅ Public Art ✅ River Walk ✅ Green Spaces ✅ Affordable Housing ✅ Extra Care Housing The list goes on…. It was a real pleasure to attend the celebration event today with Vistry Group , Chatham Maritime Trust (Kent), Homes England. Really well done to everyone involved. The event was hosted at Copper Rivet Distillery, a brilliant local distillery and restaurant, please check them out if you have never been. Huge shout out to Dave Harris, Medway’s Chief Planning Officer who has been involved in this site since the beginning!
