Such an uplifting post - we couldn’t agree more that “community engagement has real power and is very necessary” 💙
Two recent events to share which have encouraged me that community engagement has real power and is very necessary. Along with Ludovica Quaranta I facilitated a Climate Fresk at South East London Community Energy's team day at the beautiful Roots4Life in Eltham. The workshop was fun and full of science and climate discussion (which I love) with lots of people throwing in fascinating details. SELCE is an amazing organisation bringing community power to SE London started by a small group of volunteers determined to make things better. Now 10 years in they are an impressive team helping people with energy advice, encouraging investment in clean energy and managing installations on schools and community buildings of solar arrays. This Saturday I spent the day with Richard Sylvester and the Greener Greenwich Community Network team hosting a Nature event at Woolwich Common Community Centre. We had visitors of all ages, originally from Afghanistan, Nepal, Syria, Nigeria and many more who enjoyed time and food together looking at nature through plants, insects, stories, craft and vegetarian food provided by Trini Flamingo. We had loads of support from the centre staff and from Kevin and Surjit from Good Food in Greenwich and GCDA- Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency. Both of these, in stark contrast to the messages on the news and social media at the moment, showed what we can do working together no matter where we started out. Get to know your neighbours, look after them and learn from each other. It is the only way to fight the disinformation and Xenophobia.
