📚 Sarah Jordan tells us about her favourite books: "The first is my favourite book from childhood: Eye Of The Moon by Dianne Hofmeyr. The book follows Isikara, the daughter of a high priest, and Prince Tuthmosis, who everyone believes to be dead, as they travel to Nubia to gather allies to take back the throne. It's an incredibly exciting story with numerous interesting characters who have wonderful chemistry, and I enjoyed the representation of multiple disabled characters. It does navigate some very dark themes, but they are handled with the respect and care they deserve. I've reread it quite a lot. However, I do not recommend the sequel. The second is Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber. I read it in college for my A-Level and it's stayed with me ever since. It is a collection of fairy tales reimagined in a gothic style. It is heavy with subtext regarding girlhood, female sexuality, corruption, and roles in partnerships. It can be difficult to read at certain points, but it creates a more empowered, feminist alternative to traditional fairy tales. I highly recommend it."
