🇪🇷 Updates from Eritrea 🇪🇷 We are thrilled to share with you that @Vita and CO2balance have collaborated on a new safe water project in Eritrea, which has repaired 179 boreholes and plans to fix 181 in total! This will help an incredible 82,900 people access clean and safe water. In the Red Sea and Gash Barka Regions of Eritrea Co2balance and Vita Green Impact Fund have partnered to fix broken community water points that have fallen into disrepair. This project reduces the burden of water collection that often falls on women and children by providing more local water sources. 🛠️💧 Vita Ireland recently hosted a Local Stakeholder Consultation in Massawa, on the coast of the Red Sea. 73 participants attended including water committee members, water technicians, community leaders and government officials. These consultations help our projects to be more considerate of local needs and also allow us to plan for training sessions like WASH and maintenance training. Last week CO2balance's UK staff came together for our quarterly team training day! This time it was all about communication styles, recognising each other's strengths, and improving our coaching skills. Thank you to Ian Williams and Lorna Pearcey at Caplor Horizons for helping us to become better listeners, colleagues, and team players. We got to hear about the latest market updates in Carbon offsetting from our Sales and Marketing Director, Paul Chiplen and celebrated our successes: ⭐Issuing our first credits in Burkina Faso ⭐Connecting to our field partners during team trips to Malawi, Uganda, Guatemala, Ethiopia, and Togo ⭐Our largest credit-producing projects in Mozambique and Zambia Most excitingly, it was time for Kate Danter to hand over her Oscar award. Johanna Grosssteinbeck became this quarter's winner, recognizing a person who has dedicated an incredible amount of hard work and proactivity to her projects. She's taken on new responsibilities with a brilliant attitude...and scored a lot of goals for our football team. Well done Johanna👏 #TeamTrainingDay #Markets #Sustainability #Careers

💬 "This support is really helping us!" 💬 - Angela, a CO2balance borehole user in Zambia. In 2019, CO2balance partnered with ROCS to rehabilitate boreholes in Eastern Zambia, one of the boreholes was in Angela's village. Since then, Angela's children no longer get sick from unsafe water, and her whole family has much more time now that they don't have to travel 2 hours every day to collect water. 🚰💧 Angela has invested this time into building her farming business. She can now make an income from growing and selling sugar cane and sweet potato, and it's also helped provide a secure food source for her family. With the extra income, Angela has been able to purchase a bicycle and a television. ✅ Hear more from Angela here: https://lnkd.in/gmiWPxbg #safewater #carbonoffsetting #communitybenefits #casestudy #sustainablefuture #sdg5 #zambia

Last week CO2balance took part in Frank Water's Stand up for Safe Water event here in Bristol 👏 We spent the day racing up and down the harbour in various vessels raising money for a fantastic cause - alleviating global water poverty💙 Having never paddle-boarded before, we somehow managed to splash our way into the final and scooped up the top prize! (You could say we had an oar-some time...) We came away feeling extremely inspired after hearing Frank's Head of Programmes John Shepherd speak about their incredible - and ground-breaking work in clean water provision across Nepal, India, and Kenya. We'd like to thank Frank Water for all the hard work that went into last week's event and for the amazing contributions they make to solving the global water and climate crisis. P.s a big thank you to Pieminister for keeping us fed, SUP Bristol for training us up on the morning of the event, Olympic Bronze medalist Jenny Jones for entertaining us with her brilliant commentary on the mic and Frank Water for the lush photos 📸 #supbristol #bristol #waterislife #water Anna Self David Warnes Lorenzo Gubbini Zach Clarke

What is WASH? 💧 🌎 WASH is community-based Water, Sanitation & Hygiene training, which is delivered annually by our project partners' field teams to users of rehabilitated waterpoints. WASH empowers communities with access to clean water to learn safe practices for sanitation and hygiene. It transforms lives, prevents diseases and supports the UNs Sustainable Development Goals. ✅ What are the benefits of WASH? • It helps to prevent water-borne illnesses, which contribute to Sustainable Development Goals such as #SDG3 (Good Health & Wellbeing.) • It educates communities in enhancing hygiene practices, as well as collecting and storing water to prevent contamination. • We collaborate with community-based Water Resource Committees to ensure a high-quality, needs-based training package is delivered. #cleanwaterforall #washtraining #wash #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #safedrinkingwater #waterislife #water

Co-benefits are a huge part of the projects we work on at CO2balance. It's not just about reduced carbon emissions, but the whole host of wider benefits that our work brings. 💫 Our Togo Safe Water project in partnership with Deki and IADES TOGO establishes and strengthens existing Mother Clubs in local communities where we have rehabilitated water points. These clubs, are made up of women who are committed to improving sanitation and hygiene practices within their communities. 💧 Each Mother Club involved within the project receives an extensive WASH training programme conducted by IADES TOGO, covering topics such as sources of water contamination, safe water collection and storage. The women then host meetings with other village members to share the information they've learnt to encourage communal awareness. 👥 🤝 "We all work together now to make our village clean"- Ado, member of a Mother Club. 🔗 Hear directly from the women involved by reading our blog here: https://lnkd.in/e5Ycq-5A 📸elowins pictures Shelby Alexander #togo #gender #safewater #water #motherclubs #WASH

Recently CO2 staff members Rebecca and Chiara travelled to Malawi to visit the safe water projects we run with locally based organisation Self Help Africa. They joined the field team to audit rehabilitated boreholes, which are a key source of water for many communities. Rebecca and Chiara also observed how the project is monitored and discussed improvements that are sometimes needed to ensure increased accuracy and transparency of the project. A highlight of the trip was seeing that the field team has been hosting bonus maintenance training for communities in addition to the existing WASH trainings that Self Help Africa conducts. Trainings like this are of great value for these communities so they can keep using BHs sustainably and independently. They enjoyed spending time with the communities and were warmly welcomed by some celebratory dancing in true Malawi fashion. Vita Ireland has been extremely busy planting trees this year🌳 As well as providing access to safe water and distributing clean cookstoves in #Ethiopia, our fantastic project partners Vita Ireland aim to plant 2 million trees by 2027! These trees will help to restore degraded landscapes and provide a livelihood for thousands of people. Approximately 19,500 households in 2024 are expected to receive 20 different types of seedlings! Communities will also receive training on basic tree care and management. Here are just a few of the species that households can expect to receive: 🌳Moringa seedlings for food and medicinal value 🌳Acacia for animal fodder and ecological benefits 🌳East African Cordia for soil repair and timber Read more about Vita's work here: https://lnkd.in/gqDBR4b9 #UnitedForLand #reforestation #greatgreenwall #LandRestoration #SustainableFuture #EcoEntrepreneurship #SustainableDevelopmentGoals

Team members Matt and Megan have just returned from Guatemala after visiting Estufas Chispa last week. We've been working with this organisation since 2021 to distribute more efficient cooking systems to rural households 👏 In rural Guatemala, 98% of households depend on wood for their primary cooking source. Traditionally, families use three-stone fires - an unsustainable and harmful use of non-renewable biomass which places an unequal burden on women and children 🚺 Megan and Matt have been busy visiting the stove producers and end-user communities and having discussions with Estufas Chispa on how to improve #monitoring procedures to improve the #transparency of our projects. Some of the communities who benefit from this project live amongst active volcanoes in a remote part of Guatemala. Matt and Megan experienced daily life there which includes the occasional earthquake, incredible wildlife, and challenging access to services.
