Supporting the growth of community energy in London
About us
Community Energy can mean everything from clubbing together to get solar on your local estate or city farm, to doing talks with schools about saving energy, or even screening a film about energy with your neighbours. CEL was established to help support groups in London to share experience, resources and learning – as well as to inspire new groups and lobby government to favour community energy. We’re a varied bunch; some of us are driven by the desire to mitigate dangerous climate change, others want to eradicate fuel poverty in London: The one thing we have common? We’re all trying to make a difference and improve our city!

We launched a new partnership with SGN today, to take aim at fuel poverty in Lambeth. We had a chance to celebrate this morning at the end of #CommunityEnergyFortnight alongside some #CommunityEnergy folks from CREW Energy, who are also kicking off a new partnership to support households in fuel poverty to the south-west of us. We'll be supporting Lambeth residents who are struggling with their energy costs today, while we're building community capacity for longer-term solutions – to ultimately provide lower-cost energy and create warmer and healthier homes for Londoners. Get in touch if you're supporting households experiencing fuel poverty in Lambeth and would like to chat about how we can work together!

We're less than a week away from our annual conference on the 18th July in Hackney - a short post here on why examining the #FutureOfCommunityEnergy is so important at this time. Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/eq4jfTcG @TheLabourParty have set out "for communities to take back control, Labour is announcing that #GBEnergy's first major programme will be to build cheaper, cleaner power in cities, towns and villages across the country" [https://lnkd.in/e3_sqhvw] "...That is why Labour is allocating resources to support local power in partnership with communities. GB Energy will make available up to £600m in funding for local authorities and up to £400m low-interest loans each year for communities" "...GB Energy will partner with energy companies, local authorities and cooperatives to develop up to 8GWs of cheaper, cleaner power by 2030..." The #LocalPowerPlan also highlights that "the early success of wind cooperatives in Denmark means 52% of wind energy is community-owned. In Germany, at least 50% of onshore wind is citizen-owned" and that "Local energy is essential for delivering cheaper, cleaner power by 2030. In developing up to 20,000 renewable power projects, Labour’s plan will accelerate deployment, reducing pressures on the transmission grid and strengthening local support..." The Local Power Plan also sets out its ambitions regionally - for London by 2030 "Build over a thousand local power projects" Last month Labour published some further details on GB Energy setting out that one of its three initial priorities will be to "Scale up municipal and community energy" [https://lnkd.in/e_YY-Qv7] And it was great to see Ed Miliband MP with Cllr Mete Coban visit a community energy solar school site in Stoke Newington developed by Stokey Energy. [https://lnkd.in/eQSnmd_U] Repowering London and North Kensington Community Energy also welcomed Ed Miliband MP and @joepowell (now MP for Kensington & Bayswater) to Westway Sports Centre PV project earlier this year. [https://lnkd.in/eQSnmd_U] With a new Government in place - we will be considering all these issues at the Future of Community Energy - 18 July at Hackney Town Hall - in partnership with Hackney Light and Power and the London Borough of Hackney. If you haven't yet registered sign up here: https://lnkd.in/eq4jfTcG See you on Thursday! #CommunityEnergy #Energy #Community #London #Conference #RenewableEnergy #NetZero #Renewables #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #EnergyTransition
