Every 40 seconds, someone dies from suicide; tens of millions more live with mental health conditions for which there is no good standard of care. Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is one of these conditions. A lesser-known subset of major depressive disorder, TRD is believed to affect more than 100 million people around the world*. People living with TRD have tried at least two different treatments within a depressive episode without success, with the chance of response decreasing with every subsequent treatment. More needs to be done to change this. This Mental Health Awareness Month, we hear real stories from people living with TRD. *Reference: McIntyre RS, et al. Treatment-resistant depression: definition, prevalence, detection, management, and investigational interventions. World Psychiatry. 2023 Oct;22(3):394-412.

“My advice is to make your club as inclusive as possible: with our hiking group, for instance, we try to plan walks that are suitable for different ability levels.” Earlier this year, members of Compass’s team founded a London-based hiking club: opportunities for team members to get together and discover day walks in and around London, as well as longer excursions around the UK. Hear from the club’s co-founders, Megan Croal, Senior Clinical Science Research Associate, and Ryan Murrell, Senior IT/AV Support Engineer, about what inspired them to set up the group and their advice for people wanting to start their own employee-led clubs.

Today marks my two year anniversary as CEO of Compass Pathways. Every day, I think about the millions of people around the world who live with serious mental health conditions for which current treatments do not work. They are urgently waiting for better options. Over the last few years, we have made great progress and our focus is now firmly on completing our phase 3 studies in treatment-resistant depression (TRD). We’re also looking beyond a potential approval in TRD towards commercialization, planning how this treatment could be integrated into health care systems and made accessible to everyone who could benefit from it. The research collaborations we’ve established this year with leading providers across the US will help us to do this. We have also strengthened our team with accomplished leaders who have proven track records of success. This year we’ve welcomed Teri Loxam as Chief Financial Officer, Mike Gold as Chief Research and Development Officer, and Lori Englebert as Chief Commercial Officer. And we look forward to Gino Santini joining us as our new Board chair at the beginning of September. I am proud to lead a team of such smart, dedicated people who care deeply about improving mental health care for everyone. I’m also proud of the culture at Compass, and very conscious of the need to continue to nurture it. Our people are deeply committed to our purpose of connecting science and compassion to reimagine mental health care – for them, we strive every day to continue to make Compass a great place to work. I look forward to another exciting year ahead, and getting another year closer to achieving our mission.

Governors play a key role in developing mental health policy and ensuring access to mental health care for people in their states. As a partner of the National Governors Association, we were pleased to attend the #NGASummerMeeting in Salt Lake City, where we had great conversations about bringing innovation to people in need.

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States, started by Bebe Moore Campbell in 2008 to help destigmatise mental health in racially and ethnically minoritised communities. It aims to bring awareness to the unique challenges that these communities face when it comes to accessing mental health care. To learn more, visit: https://lnkd.in/ePhvDgVj
