We are delighted to announce the appointment of David Carter to lead Cory’s heat networks business. David was previously co-founder and CEO of Sheen Parkside, an infrastructure arranger focused on heat decarbonisation. Before that he was Chief Product Officer at the global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright, where he trained and practiced as a lawyer specialising in infrastructure and energy projects including energy from waste in a market-leading team. Earlier this year, Cory announced a partnership with Sheen Parkside to deliver low-carbon heat to communities and businesses in London via thermal batteries transported on the River Thames. David will continue to oversee this project as well as exploring other opportunities to deliver waste heat from Cory’s energy from waste facilities to local heat networks, including progressing Cory’s current work with Vattenfall in Thamesmead. Sheen Parkside will continue to develop projects outside of London. Dougie Sutherland, CEO of Cory, said: “David joins the business at an incredibly exciting time. We are investing in a new facility to divert even more waste from landfill, developing an industry-leading carbon capture project, and working to find ways to ensure that our local communities feel the benefit of our activities. Decarbonising heat will be essential for reaching net zero, and I look forward to working with David as we progress our plans to bring low-carbon heat to communities and businesses in London, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and bringing bills down.” David Carter, Managing Director - Heat at Cory, said: “Cory has enormous potential to support the decarbonisation of London’s heat. In coming years, much of London is due to be connected to heat networks. The challenge for these networks is securing a supply of well-priced, low carbon heat and energy from waste provides exactly this. I look forward to working with the Cory team and our partners across the private sector and government to help meet that need.”

We are thrilled to announce that Chris Jones, Cory’s Director of Risk Management and Compliance, has been awarded an OBE in recognition of his exceptional contribution to workplace safety in the waste and recycling sector. Chris’s dedication to safety is evident through his involvement in the founding and chairing of the Waste Industry Safety and Health Forum (WISH). Under his leadership, WISH has united regulators, government bodies, local authorities, charitable groups, trade bodies, and private sector organisations to share best practices and coordinate safety initiatives. These efforts have led to a remarkable 25% reduction in RIDDOR rates across the sector. As Chair of the Environmental Services Association Health & Safety Committee, Chris implemented programmes that reduced injury rates by 85% among ESA members, preventing 10,000 serious injuries and 20 fatalities. At Cory, his initiatives have resulted in a 70% reduction in workplace injury rates. Chris has been involved in the writing of over 30 guidance documents, which are endorsed by the HSE as approved codes of practice, and setting safety standards for the industry. Working with others at WISH during the COVID-19 pandemic he helped to ensure the safe continuation of waste collection and delivery of an essential public service. Beyond these achievements, Chris has driven significant research and guidance on waste sector fires and created an industry blueprint for safety improvement. He is a passionate advocate for safety, and his devotion, passion, energy, and his impact on WISH, ESA and the entire sector has been immeasurable. This contribution is made all the more remarkable by the fact that all this work has been voluntary, with much of it taking place in his own time. Chris’s drive, determination, and diplomacy have earned him deep respect within the industry, and he has truly become the face of health and safety in our sector. We congratulate him on this well-deserved honour and thank him for his unwavering commitment to making the waste and recycling industry a safer and healthier place to work. Dougie Sutherland, CEO of Cory, said: “Chris’s impact, both within Cory and across the sector as a whole, has been substantial, and I can think of no one more deserving of recognition for their contribution for services to Health and Safety in the waste industry. Many congratulations on this momentous achievement.”

We are delighted to announce that we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Carbon8, as part of our ongoing work to decarbonise the waste we process.   Under the MoU, both companies will explore the application of Carbon8’s technology to capture CO2 directly from the flue gas at our Riverside EfW facility. The CO2 will be captured directly into Cory’s Air Pollution Control residue by-products from the EfW process, transforming them into sustainable construction aggregates.    This collaboration will enable Cory to become the one of the first UK EfW operators to capture CO2 at source. We also have ambitious plans to install carbon capture and storage technology which has the potential to capture c. 1.4m tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030 once complete.   Andrew O'Connor, Cory's Strategic Business Development Manager, said: “At Cory, we believe in no waste from waste. Capturing the CO2 from the waste we process and recycling Air Pollution Control residue into construction materials is an important part of this. We are proud to divert almost 800,000 tonnes of waste from landfill each year, and this partnership with Carbon8 will allow us to explore even more ways to make our processes more sustainable.” https://lnkd.in/emS48-tT

Today we published our 2023 Annual Report and Sustainability Report, which outline our plans for future growth and achieving net zero by 2040 or sooner. Operational highlights include: 🚮 Diverting 936,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from landfill ♻ Sorting 75,000 tonnes of recyclable waste 💡 Generating 476GWh of electricity – enough to power 176,000 homes We also made significant progress in our strategic growth plans in 2023. The two key elements of these plans are growing operations and increasing the amount of waste diverted from landfill, and investing in the technology to cut carbon emissions. We are delivering on this through the construction of Riverside 2, which will displace a further 650,000 tonnes of waste from landfill, and the development of a Carbon Capture and Storage project which will capture CO2 emissions from both our EfW facilities. We're delighted that our application for a Development Consent Order to build carbon capture technology at our Riverside campus has been accepted for examination by the Planning Inspectorate. This is a significant step in delivering a project which will make a material contribution to the UK’s net zero targets, stimulate jobs, and act as a UK pathfinder for CO2 shipping. Once built, our planned project will capture c.1.4 million tonnes of CO2 a year by 2030 and deliver over half a million tonnes of carbon removals. Read more below 👇 https://lnkd.in/erjpHR43 Many thanks to our external advisors WSP, LDA Design, Ardent, Pinsent Masons and Weedon Architects
